    Bob Perry once told me " weight is the enemy " ! I took his statement to heart and managed to remove 600 lbs of stuff out of the bow ( v berth, chain locker and what was hanging off the bow sprit and the Forestay. ) I switched down to a 120% Yankee hankon from the existing roller furling and followed suit with a diet in the stern taking off 140 pounds.
    The boat came alive both in speed and tracking abilities. It was not unusual to not touch the helm for 45 minutes at a time and she never hobbyhorsed.
    Of the 24 boats I owned in 40 years of sailing, without a doubt the best bluewater craft I have ever had.
    Follow what the Master Designer said on this and you will be amazed.
    Thanks for the great video!

    Bob Perry had nothing to do with the Westsail 32. Don’t know where you got that. He certainly doesn’t take credit for it. The hull form is nothing like any Perry design. The WS32 is a spin on an older Atkin design which was itself a spin on an even older Archer design. Westsail had William Crealock make changes to the deck layout, thus Crealock often is given credit for it. But Crealock himself admitted his contribution to the overall design was minimal. The Westsail 32 is basically an old wooden boat design which was updated a bit to be built in fiberglass. You are correct however that it did spark the popularity of the double ender blue water cruiser in the 1970’s

      I’m a Carter owner and fan of his. My understanding is that Perry drew inspiration from the ws32, mixed it up with Carter’s speed tricks and created the Valiant.

    Good stuff. I own A 1986 37 Tayana Pilot House. Simply love it, As A single handed, offshore cruiser it's hard to beat, when inside the Pilot house I'm, dry and comfortable. That is priceless for me, where my boat shines is the motion in large waves and Perry gave the boat generous sail area and surprises people in light wind. Everywhere I go I get complements on how nice she looks. I love the teak down below, yes, they have a few problems, but the support is amazing, every problem you might have someone else has fixed it, which for the do-it-yourself sailor is very helpful. Again, great review, is this the perfect boat for everyone. no, but she is the perfect boat for me. Cheers

    This video is informative and well researched. I own a Tayana 37 and I would like to add to your description of the cockpit. The small cockpit is to prevent taking on massive volumes of water when sailing in high latitudes, which can rapidly compromise the stability of a vessel. I sailed a Cal 20 from San Diego to Hawaii and the large cockpit volume was of great concern. The philosophy of a Baltic stern is to deal with large following seas and prevent excessive surfing when breaking waves hit the transom; the aesthetics are secondary. Interior teak requires minimal maintenance due to lack of UV exposure. Yes the exterior teak is a bit excessive in terms of adding unnecessary maintenance, some AwlGrip the rail but we have ours varnished.

  • @sd3693
    @sd3693 Před 2 lety +13

    The 37 is nice, but the one I'd have would be the Vancouver 42, especially after watching a couple of years worth of Millenial Falcon. Also, the 37 has a following, and the 42 less so, so you might find a 42 in comparable shape for a comparable price to a 37.

    • @magdakaniewski
      @magdakaniewski Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, we sail a t42. Aft cockpit. Much drier and comfortable at sea. It's an absolute tank. I recommend them highly. Huge tankage, and great galley. Ours is a 1988. No teak decks which I like the most.

    This boat is beautiful. In my book, it's not a 'real' sailboat without a lot of teak. I just love the Old World feel of the traditional layouts.

    Bravo! The Taiwanese boats are often overlooked, but they should not be. A testament to the quality that was coming from there is just how many are still out there sailing. I typically see them in either excellent condition or really tired, but even the really tired ones are worth a look. I prefer the Formosa or F50 versions more than the double ended Tayana, but it is hard to not admire those beautiful lines.

    Tayana and the Ta Yang yard made a lot of boats besides the T37. They made 202 of the Robert Harris designed Tayana Vancouver 42 of which I am happy to own one. The T48 and T52s are also fantastic boats. The T37s were not without their problems. Wet cores in foredecks and chain plates and knee issues. But teak decks on some boats aside they do make great, true blue water boats.

    Thank you for this video. I continue to look at the Tayana 37. I think of Tayana as the Asian Island Packet. They are both built for ocean crossings with comfort and safety. IP may be a little better finished and a bit more modern in recent boats. But, they seem so close to the same basic mentality.

She has never had green water on deck or ever been pooped, even surfing between 15 and 20 knots had never broached. We had some fun also in the gulf stream 200 miles northwest of Bermuda. I have few friends with double enders that have been pooped, because they lack the buoyancy to lift, but being cruisers they'll be heavy or down on their marks. Phil

    They are extremely comfortable at anchor compared to the lighter modern designs, comfortable and safe at sea too. Timeless beauties. Their keel is also very safe when you accidentally go bumping the bottom and the cutaway and narrow fin profile makes her surprisingly fast once they get moving.
    Personally, if i had to do it again, I would look at the modified fin wth skeg Perry boats, like the Passport or the Valiant, you gain a bit more agility and loose little.
    Those looking at Tayanas, also check out the Baba's, which are very similar Perry designs.

    Hey so. About 5 minutes in you refer to the west sail 32 as a Bob Perry boat. No sir, it’s a Bill Créalock / Colin Archer boat.

      According to the Westsail 32 page on Wikipedia, the original design was by Atkins, although Crealock was involved in modifying the original lines. You're right ... William Perry had nothing to do with Westsail.

    • @gymcoachdon
      @gymcoachdon Před 2 lety

      @@jimb6208 Robert Perry did design a boat for Westsail, the Westsail 39. It was right before the company went bankrupt, and they only made 13 before the company folded. The molds were sold, and another dozen or so were sold as Fairweather Mariner 39's, or sometimes listed as Mariner 39's. I always thought that Colin Archer influenced Atkins, who designed a boat for someone else, which was the inspiration for Crealock to design the 32. I have found all 3 names associated with the W32! Not sure who actually gets credit, but the final drawings that became the W32 were drawn by William Crealock as best as I know.

    I went through a storm (worse than a gale) in the Gulf of Mexico in one of these. We were broadsided by massive waves and knocked down, which in a Tayana is not far from a capsize. The sea was white and insane. The boat went through with no problem!

    "I have to be very careful not to get it wrong" but you attribute the Westsail to Bob Perry? Your review did no justice to the Tayana, especially the Perry designs. You called the Island Packet a battleship and referred to the Tayana as the aircraft carrier in another video. Would have been a perfect opportunity to elaborate!

    Robert Perry relied on heavy everything as a bandaid over a proper holistic design. We can all design bricks yet bricks don’t sail very well.
