I feel so conflicted with Black, on one hand it has such a great setting and tone, and it really is a fascinating game with loads of depth, on the other hand the difficulty is so frustrating it makes me want to cry, good video though again Deasadoo! Yea trying Black again in 2023 the gameplay is.... 😬 rough. Those old ps2 controls are something else, its never comfortable. 2012 for me had the best controls but damn is it disappointing almost everywhere else. Sucks cause I love black the most but those damn controls stop me from ever playing through the whole thing 100%.

Black had depressively dark and grey, boring stage design, and deep but too dark story telling, while TM2 had hilarious endings, colorful and interesting stages and vehicles, and stage designs for great strategic approaches. TM2 was also highly satisfying to play local co-op with family, no matter if it was head2head or co-op tournament mode. That game is a league of its own, in almost every parameter its the superior against any other TM game. But yeah, the character stories were shorter...
Black had a tough time of making all the characters "dark" its harder to make serious characters with good stories where the previous games were "wacky" and needed no dramatic depth for the drivers. I hate all the stories in Black except Sweet Tooth and Crazy 8, Dollface most the others are dumb
Black has a full vision! I love it so much from the visuals, the stories, and the soundtrack. It’s a bit challenging even in easy mode but it’s style is incredible!
As someone who only really has nostalgia for TM:B and hasn't seriously dived into the PS1 games until this year, I really enjoy TM1. For a casual and fun session, I'd rather play it than 2, 3, or 4. When you pick a vehicle with good handling like Mr Grimm, the gameplay is near painless, and the CPU doesn't have access to the obnoxious cheese tactics that make TM2 so annoying to play through. The realistic setting and the collision+ram damage are cool and make the game satisfying to immerse in. And, the CPU can't steal your heals and waste your effort to whittle them down. The simplicity works very well, in my opinion.

I have only played 1, 2, 3, & 4 myself but your list makes a lot of sense to me with the one exception being Small Brawl, that one surprised me. From the gameplay I've seen the cars look like they slide around too much, IMO, but maybe it plays better than it looks. The characters, endings, and vehicle models don't present the game well at the very least like you said. Again, I've only played 1-4 but this is how I think I would rate them based on what I've seen, worst to best. TM3, TM1, TM Small Brawl, TM4, TM 2012, TM Black, TM Head-On, TM2
Interesting list. I personally would rank TM1 and 3 a bit higher and 2012 and 4 a bit lower, but overall I pretty much agree. Glad you put Small Brawl high on the list. I honestly love the vibe of the game and it's cool imagining the roster as just being a bunch of high school kids in the local neighborhood, just getting together and have a rc car contest. So much content was planned for that game but had to be cut cause the PS1 couldn't handle it. If any TM deserves a remake or sequel it's SB, so they could add in all the cut stuff. I definitely think the devs had a lot of fun making that game, but had to scale back the final product. Imagine what it could be on the PS5 as a remaster or remake.

The pieces would break off the giant rc car and then you'd have to destroy the debris before it morphed back into Piecemeal... or something like that. If you're interested, look up Axel's Small Brawl ending on CZcams. I don't remember which video it is, it's the one with most amount of views or second most amount, but a dev commented on the game. He listed some of the cut content in a CZcams comment. They're is also some stuff about missing Small Brawl content on Twisted Metal Alliance forum page and the TM wiki site.

Good seeing Small Brawl getting some love. About it: it was originally going to be a PS2 game, but Sony didn't want to be double dipping on the same console. So, with the more kid friendly tone, it was rationalized that older brothers would probably be getting the PS2 and more Mature Black. While the PS1 would have been handed down to the younger brother, and so the more kid friendly Small Brawl would be a better fit on the console. I do wonder what it would have been like if it had come on the PS2 as planned. Would it eclipse Black as most people's favorite, as a lot of Black's weaknesses aren't in SB (Colour pallet, less insanely difficult, T rating vs M rating availability and European censorship). Or seen more along the lines of Head On of "it's good but Black is better". Or perhaps Sony's theory that it'd be too soon for another TM game on the PS2; would have kept it in "Hidden Gem" territory and people still passed on it by and large.

I spent countless and I mean countless hours playing Twisted Metal 1 and 2. 2:08 omg I forgot you could go first person!! That was so cool back then! You got to remember this is 1995 on the PlayStation 1. The N64 would not release for another year and a half. I think you need to cut Twisted Metal one some slack.

It always confused me how many find Black to be so difficult and then find 2 so much more enjoyable. I find 2 to be way more difficult especially with the horrid physics, slow game inputs, and blatant cheap ai.

Okay, I too like Small Brawl, but it feels absolutely criminal to rate it #2 having never played it. Additionally, the reason you don’t like Head On as much as you should is because you don’t appreciate TM2 enough. Head On was a nearly-perfect spiritual successor to TM2, and still supplies the best balance of modern controls, aesthetic, map design, storytelling, and gameplay. It does suffer a bit from having little innovation and from a lack of distinct character, but it’s still among the best.

Gameplay is always number 1 in a *game* & 4 makes me feel like I have control. The only difference between 3 & 4 physics wise is that in 3 your car sits upsidedown for a few seconds before redirecting itself. If 3 automatically flipped your car back up like 4 does, I feel like it would have been more well received. Two's controls on the other hand are just horrid & completely broken. You feel like a pinball with zero control. Enemies just endlessly spam freeze & specials. Knockback from specials is exaggerated. Drive in a straight line, lose control. Up a hill, lose control. Down a hill, lose control. Brake, lose control. Turbo, lose control. It's honestly obnoxious. Not to mention your special attacks like shield, freeze, etc.. work like 50% of the time & never fast enough to be useful during combat. Try using your shield when Twister has you in a tornado - I could see TM2 being placed towards the bottom with TM1 if not for its colorful cast & settings that apparently is enough to push it to the top in every list. Somehow.

I have played every single Twisted Metal game and this is how I would rate them: 1. Twisted Metal Black 2. Twisted Metal 2 3. Twisted Metal Head On 4. Twisted Metal 2012 5. Twisted Metal Small Brawl 6. Twisted Metal 3 7. Twisted Metal 1 8. Twisted Metal 4 I would have put Twisted Metal 2 in #1 if it wasn't for it's broken AI Twisted Metal Head-On could have also been a lot better if the game was a bit more difficult to play it's just way too easy but the endings are really good Twisted Metal 2012 had the potential to be the best Twisted Metal game ever but the lack of characters just ruins it wish if it had more characters and storylines Twisted Metal 4 is my least favorite TM game mainly because of the characters and their endings suck Twisted Metal 3 is just as bad as TM4 but at least it has the characters we know and love Twisted Metal 1 I have nothing to say about this game it's just Twisted Metal And lastly Twisted Metal Black it's peak Twisted Metal in my opinion it ticks all the boxes for me, good story, good gameplay, good characters, if they ever make another Twisted Metal game they should make it just like TMB, no corny comedy or childish characters
If we're talking about "Twisted Metal BUT" then there's also Rouge Trip: Vacation 2012, the game Singletrac made while 989 had their baby. It's got TM all over it (including the cover in a coy "From the creators" way).
Some things you should know about Critical Depth: In most of the game's endings, the character/faction you choose gets the short end of a stick (like in Twisted Metal), but 2 ½ of the characters/factions get a happy ending (the half thing is for one faction which kinda gets what the faction wants, but it also has a sucky side). I will not tell which ones because spoilers. Joe Skullion is the Mr. Grimm of the game. Le Griffe's Super is like Mr. Slam's. Bottom Liner's Super is handy, but a bit useless against AI (takes ammo from enemies). And one final thing: You should look at every character/faction's bio.
Twisted metal head on is definitely top 3. I dont exactly count lost. I can see how black is great but the tone can be pretty off-putting after a little while.
My order from worst to best would be: 1, 2012, 2, 4, Black, 3, Small Brawl, Head-on. 2 would be higher if I head-on didn't existed. But since it does, i see little reason to play 2 when I could play Head-on instead hehe

We need a twisted metal small black !!! Best aspects of both game… slow down the driving like brawl have it a bit more horror like black and have the setting combined !!!!!!
Despite having better gameplay than several other titles in the series, TM4 is the absolute worst for me, due to how the devs decided to make it a full-on comedy, going as cartoonish and goofy as they could with it. I think the most egregious thing they did was their total misunderstanding and butchering of Sweet Tooth's character -- despite what TM4's narrative would have you believe, he is *NOT* an actual clown...rather, he's a serial killer who dresses like one in order to intimidate his victims. I will forever be grateful for TMB, rebooting the TM universe and finally bringing the series back to its dark and serious roots.
@Dessadoo I love SB's OST sm. They took two already amazing soundtracks (well most of the songs from TM1 & 2) and somehow made them even better. My top 3 are Easy Death Oven, Now Slaying, and Shock Therapy

for me Black is pretty easy but TM2 is VERY hard

If I had to update my rankings based on what I’ve learned over the past few months, I would definitely put TM2 down at the bottom with TM1.
twisted metal black being unique? or deep? the game with like half the chars in the roster just wanting revenge? ya...... super deep meaning..... i mean i love the game but.... ya.. those stories are sooo not as DEEP as i thought when i was a child. twisted metal 2 endings still look better than small brawl. small brawl is twisted metal 4 in this list. good gameplay etc.... everything else? not really is what id imagine most twisted metal fans wanted, after 1,2,3,4, black etc. and on ps1? Sorry but its below TM2 for me even tho id imagine small brawl does PLAY better. its everything around that also in TM2 i think is better, more interesting, well designed... small brawl is not even well animated for a 3d game... reboot looks better, beast wars looks better lol jk
I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Black gives the player much more to appreciate in its world, tone, and stories than just about any other TM game, but I appreciate the comment and feedback!

I feel like story doesn't matter nearly as much as gameplay in car combat games. At least that's what appeals to me in this genre, the gameplay.

I have played every single Twisted Metal game and this is how I would rate them:
1. Twisted Metal Black
2. Twisted Metal 2
3. Twisted Metal Head On
4. Twisted Metal 2012
5. Twisted Metal Small Brawl
6. Twisted Metal 3
7. Twisted Metal 1
8. Twisted Metal 4
I would have put Twisted Metal 2 in #1 if it wasn't for it's broken AI
Twisted Metal Head-On could have also been a lot better if the game was a bit more difficult to play it's just way too easy but the endings are really good
Twisted Metal 2012 had the potential to be the best Twisted Metal game ever but the lack of characters just ruins it wish if it had more characters and storylines
Twisted Metal 4 is my least favorite TM game mainly because of the characters and their endings suck
Twisted Metal 3 is just as bad as TM4 but at least it has the characters we know and love
Twisted Metal 1 I have nothing to say about this game it's just Twisted Metal
And lastly Twisted Metal Black it's peak Twisted Metal in my opinion it ticks all the boxes for me, good story, good gameplay, good characters, if they ever make another Twisted Metal game they should make it just like TMB, no corny comedy or childish characters

If we're talking about "Twisted Metal BUT" then there's also Rouge Trip: Vacation 2012, the game Singletrac made while 989 had their baby. It's got TM all over it (including the cover in a coy "From the creators" way).
Oh yeah I’ve checked out Rogue Trip! It’s definitely got the vibe of a more refined TM2, but set in a different world.
Some things you should know about Critical Depth:
In most of the game's endings, the character/faction you choose gets the short end of a stick (like in Twisted Metal), but 2 ½ of the characters/factions get a happy ending (the half thing is for one faction which kinda gets what the faction wants, but it also has a sucky side). I will not tell which ones because spoilers.
Joe Skullion is the Mr. Grimm of the game.
Le Griffe's Super is like Mr. Slam's.
Bottom Liner's Super is handy, but a bit useless against AI (takes ammo from enemies).
And one final thing: You should look at every character/faction's bio.
Twisted metal head on is definitely top 3. I dont exactly count lost. I can see how black is great but the tone can be pretty off-putting after a little while.
My order from worst to best would be:
1, 2012, 2, 4, Black, 3, Small Brawl, Head-on.
2 would be higher if I head-on didn't existed. But since it does, i see little reason to play 2 when I could play Head-on instead hehe
My top 10 list is 1 TM BLACK 2 TM 2012 3 TM1 4 TMHO 5 TM4 6 TM 2 7 TM3 8 TM SB. I actually never played 3 or small brawl but I watched some of the gameplays on them.
We need a twisted metal small black !!! Best aspects of both game… slow down the driving like brawl have it a bit more horror like black and have the setting combined !!!!!!
Small Brawl seemed unfinished kinda half-baked. I remember playing it and thinking they HAD to have rushed that shit
I also feel the same way about originals because I believe Sly Cooper 3 was better than the other two.

Despite having better gameplay than several other titles in the series, TM4 is the absolute worst for me, due to how the devs decided to make it a full-on comedy, going as cartoonish and goofy as they could with it. I think the most egregious thing they did was their total misunderstanding and butchering of Sweet Tooth's character -- despite what TM4's narrative would have you believe, he is *NOT* an actual clown...rather, he's a serial killer who dresses like one in order to intimidate his victims. I will forever be grateful for TMB, rebooting the TM universe and finally bringing the series back to its dark and serious roots.
To me, tm3 is the best

@Dessadoo I love SB's OST sm. They took two already amazing soundtracks (well most of the songs from TM1 & 2) and somehow made them even better. My top 3 are Easy Death Oven, Now Slaying, and Shock Therapy

Black is the best. The dark stories, (watched them from YT because you already know why) the action-packed gameplay, and the interesting secrets.
Agree with everything except twisted metal 2 near the bottom for me as any game would be where the enemies can freeze spam you to death
That’s a great point. The AI in TM2 and TM2012 are both ridiculous when it comes to freeze spamming and other cheap tactics
