Mercedes transmission mode button: how to use BRC BMW Repair Crew

  • This briefly shows How To operate the transmission mode selector button on a mercedes. Basically it explains how to determine what the button does on the gear selector area in many mercedes Benz vehicles. The W/S button places the transmission in either "w" winter or "s" summer mode. This essentially is normal operation under the summer function with all (5-7 based on which tranny you have) gears being used or activated. The winter mode starts you in second gear to reduce wheel spin on takeoff and hopefully give you less chance of slipping or wrecking. Most mercedes vehicles are rear wheel drive and are still competent driving cars even in snowy conditions provided you know how to drive them properly. Learning how to use this button to can help optimize your mercedes for wet or slick driving conditions.

      Samo, it may seem like that, as you hold the gear you start in longer (ie bypasses first) so as long as your car isn't bogged down starting out if you get going you avoid a whole gear change until maybe 40-50 mph

      No problem! I personally think the letters they picked are kind of strange, but I guess it makes sense given it's 'winter' and 'summer', still seems like it would have made more sense to make it say H/L for high or low gears, etc.

    The toggle itself simply raises and lowers a divider between the led light source and the oposing photocell of an open-faced iso chip simular to those used to monitor tape deck rpms . Its surface mount and tiny, one area to give an extra wipe if cleaning the cappuccino out of the machino. Yes a spilled drink does not necessarily spell the end of that 4-6 hundred dollar shift module. Just unclip from trans lever uderneath and unclip plastic retainer on the "in park confirmation cable" at front after removing all7 mountingscrews,and lifting then clean the electronic boards carfully with suitable pcb or elelectrical conector spray cleaners. Dry with compressed air just regulate the pressure down so all the surface mounted bits remain affixxed. Than propper scan tool to relieve from limp mode and may have just saved yourself paying for a new modual. Just take care w/it and dont mind the first 3-4 bits of plastic that break just dont damage the circuit boards. Remove ash tray(setting p-brake to take out of park), crossbrace (directly in front of modual, long screws),window button panel (just snapped down, clean as nessessary), console ,ac duct.

    Hi! Is there a way to repair the gear shifter module on the Mercedes Benz W203 facelift model 2004 year. The indivation on the dash cluster is P irrespective of which gear it is in. When in Park, I am able to shift to any gear but when in Drive or Neutral, it does go into Park whilst I depress the brake pedal. However, if the brake pedal is not depressed, I can shift into Park as normal. I mean repair apart from merely replacing the gear selector.

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848  Před 4 lety +1

      Rocky Juglall typically when you can change gears or move the lever and there is no change on the display your shift module has gone bad and you need to either source from a junkyard or buy a new one. Could also possibly be the TCM computer, to be safe you'd likely want a specialist to see it in person so you don't replace parts you don't need.

    • @bmwrepaircrew8848
      @bmwrepaircrew8848  Před 5 lety

      Knowledge Bey hey, unfortunately the lower plastic won't likely have anything to do with it, it just a cover that is prone to cracking. 90% of the time on a w220 it's the childsmart sensor in the pass seat. You could try cleaning the contacts of the seat buckle receivers to see if that works, otherwise you would likely want to get it scanned by someone with an advanced Mercedes scanner (some higher versions of carsoft, STAR, etc) to make sure it's the childsmart sensor, then you would either need to replace it or they do sell Chinese emulators that emulate a correct child smart signal- my recommendation would be to replace with the right sensor if you want the light off, it's a little more work and $ but will be 100% then

      Nicolae, I'm not sure, I think you can from a standstill, but I wouldn't chance it while in motion/driving at any speed. It likely would be OK since it should only affect gear selection at takeoff, but I wouldn't want to try it and end up with a transmission issue! Thanks for watching!

      天祖純皇帝 great question, it's likely that the W mode would be most economical as it would result in more gradual initial acceleration (i.e. Fewer gears, not starting in lowest gear, thus more time at higher rpm/energy in gear changes), it is likely to be marginal, and you might be better off by altering driving style (more even and moderate accelerating (i.e. Don't stomp the gas everywhere) and easing into stops, etc

      @@user-uj5bd7fn5i it doesn't shift more quickly, it just starts you in 2nd gear. Its to avoid tires spinning on snow, ice, wet roads, leaves, etc. when you initially move car out of park. At least the version from early 2000s I am familiar with. It literally is only relevant the first few seconds you start driving. After that your transmission shifts exactly like it does all the time and you have full range of gears 1-5.
