Overview and review of the new Pro 3 Special Edition from Sequential. Also, a quick correction, you CAN set each of the sequencer tracks to be a separate length!
Great review, thanks! I sold an Epiphone Texan guitar in about 1982 to buy the Six-Trak, which still sits proudly above my Wavestation and not far from my Mopho (Dave Smith rules).Long live synthesizers.
I didn't really care about Sequential before this came out, but now I want one. I pretty much always need dirty distorted basslines or leads in almost every song, and this thing is really good at those. Plus, it can do lots of other stuff too. So it quickly went up to the top of my GAS list, along with the Peak.
Watching further in the video, very cool synth. I don't think I'll ever buy another mono synth again, I currently have a Moog Voyager XL and my biggest issue with it is that it's mono. Basically, I just wish I could play chords on such a beautiful sounding synth. I also have a Dreadbox Medusa, which is mono and paraphonic. It can do basic chords but each new note cuts off the last one so it lacks a certain finesse. I would say I'm definitely more of a fan of polyphonic synths, the more voices the better, they're just more fun to play with. (in my personal point of view, of course.) Anyway, yep that's it from me. Thanks again for the cool video, very in depth and informative.
@@travymoto1 I feel ya, given the choice between the two, the SE is more of a piece of gear I'd look at and feel proud to have in my studio. For me, it's not just how the gear sounds but how it feels to look at it and how lust worthy it is as a device. Sometimes gear just makes me want it so bad purely by how it looks, the fact that it also sounds amazing or has massive sonic variation is an added bonus.
@DIV1NITAL Hey thank for the reply. Yeah i think about buying a subsequent 37 and see which one i like. the pro 3 or the subsequent 37. I dont have tons of gear. I got a poly synth, just looking for a great mono synth and then my mpcx for the rest i have ableton and plugins. May have to look into the subsequent 37. Not sure about its matrix tho. gotta do some research i guess. Thanks for the info!
@D MD Interesting dude. thanks for the reply. I will look into a ARP Odyssey. I got the pro3 and love it but debate on a moog sub37 to add to it, that or a sh-01a for leads. I do like the Hydra Synth. Not sure about it for the price though. The way it works is alittle different. Looking at the Poly D a bit but dont think ill end up getting it. Jealous ya got the prophet6, that and ob6 sound amazing. Sequential Pro 3 sounds very rowdy. Love it.
Please One quick question , I have an OB6 that I love, do you feel I will gain anything more or different seeing I have an OB6 if I get this , I did not like that you felt it was a little dull I know what you mean and I don't like dull sounding Synths. Thank you loved your review
Hey T, eight months later what do you still think about the Pro3se? I Did purchase mine sometime after you released this video. I have yet to feel confident about the purchase. And one on one comparison, the Korg MiniLogue XD, has a better tonality and sound than the Pro 3. The only other thing that I noticed that I might have changed is, well visually the unit needs a knob overhaul. Additionally the way you tune the OSC on the Rev 2, you actually see on the display the note value. On the P3, you get a numeric value. After using both I like the actual note value display. It gets me closer to the root note right away. The rest of it is by ear. These are my thoughts.
I ended up selling my Pro 3SE a few months ago actually. It's a nice monosynth, but I had reservations about the overall sound. And I just realized I really get on better with polysynths, less frustrating for me ;)
@@tarekith Thank you for this, I love all of your videos. I’ve been examining some of your sound sets for at least a decade. Really good stuff congratulations. The monosynths which I have tested, that make a really good sound and these are just my opinions: The Manther, side by side to the P3se, has a very nice rubbery base, the character is changed because of the filter and I find a pleasant mix in today’s pallet of synthesizers as far as the sound goes. The MC 202, press the button and turn it on go right to work makes it great sound! The Matriarch. Pure butter. The MatrixBrute ... slightly a notch above the P3. The Tom Oberheim Two voice pro. Amazing. The Roland SYS 500 M, The complete modular set both releases: has all the components to make as much secret sauce as you can possibly imagine. I have compared my P3 to a few more of my other Synths but this is the the core of my exploration so far. And you know like anyone I’m only wishing to figure out each one of these beautiful machines and how they fit into a workflow.
He needs to use a NTG4 mike put some EQ and compression The room modes defiantly an issue. Some minor treatment and a close up NTG4 should do the trick.
If you don’t mind me asking, how are the wheels and the cutoff pot now? I stumbled across your forum post about it. My SE comes in Tuesday, now I feel obligated to wear my lucky shirt, spin around 3 times, and face east when I open the thing.
How are you liking it after 2 years ? My pro 3 se is coming in soon and I cant wait because its kinda everything I need that would boost up my workflow and production for my type of music. I was wondering if you could layer multiple layers of sequence with taht sequencer? probably not but it would be nice for creatiivity
Honestly I ended up selling it shortly after making this video. Nice monosynth, but I decided something with a bit more polyphony would work better for me.
Hey I noticed you have the Tyler DX2's and was wondering how big your room is? I was thinking of getting the MM5X's since my mastering room is 12x18x10. But perhaps the DX2's would be just fine in my room (I have plenty of acoustic treatment). Thanks much.
@@tarekith Thanks for the prompt response. They are definitely on the list now (along with Barefoot Footprint 01, Focal Trio6B, Hedd Type 20, and a few others). Hopefully you are still enjoying them.
@@tarekith Hey how big is the woofer (top) and is the bottom woofer the same size or smaller? In some pics I've seen, the bottom woofer looks smaller. Thx.

yo dude. i got a question for you. i got a se and noticed mine had that same scratchy filter knob you had. how was it opening it up and fixing it? easy?
Yep, very easy. Contact Sequential, they sent me detailed instructions including diagrams. I was very impressed with how easy the Pro3 is to service actually.
Great video Tarekith, thanks for this review. Just please, watch your signal levels. Your synth sound is much louder then your voice, and it's sometimes painful to listen...
I'm not really sure if it's futuristic look suits the wood. I do think the screen being closer to you would be nice though. I'm surprised they would cheap out on screen printing on a £1500 synth. So the black bits on the SE are painted and the standard are stickers.
Love mine , it’s hard not to add and modulate the feedback all the time. I’ve found it quite buggy with local off, but Hopefully that will be addressed in time. So far it’s pretty much everything I imagined it to be. Is it me or is the chorus different to the OB-6 ?
Sounds good, looks beautiful. Beware of Sequential’s encoders though! The most used ones next to the display stopped working on my Prophets after 15 to 18 months.
On all CZcams demos and reviews the sound is kind of thin and nasal compared to a Moog. Kind of digital somehow, strange. I don't like it at all. What are all the modulations good for if the basic sound misses deepness? My view...
I was hoping for sounds that I could t get out of other synths. Either you didnt know how to change the sounds or this just makes the same synth sounds that you can create on synths like the minilogue xd which is essentially the same type of design having 2 analog vcos and a digital vco

@@mpmi7588 Don't get me wrong the XD is a great synth :) but I traded it for my first electric guitar after i got an OB-6 Module. It is hard to compare to the DSI sound. Going to pick up a pro 3 soon!
I have a MB and a Pro-2. FWIW, the MB is amazing in every way except the keybed is like their old midi controllers. Definitely not up to the standard of the Fatar action. It sounds great, looks great, and is crazy powerful especially with the new update. It also interfaces well with other gear. If I could, I would maybe try to have both. Layered together in paraphonic mode would be insane. If I had to choose, based on what I’ve seen, I might go with the MB, just because it has so many powerful options and features.
The tight and clean core sound is why the Pro 3 is so useful. Compared to my Matriarch and OB6, Pro 3 is by far the easiest to mix and without question the best choice for sound design. And don't think for a second it can't blow the doors off your house and make your neighbors question their existence. This thing can make MASSIVE sounds.
I have 3 DSI/Sequential synths (MEK, P6, P12) and, in all cases, it is important to gain stage properly. Too many people run the oscillator levels far too high into the mixer, resulting in ugly distortion. I have no doubt this is the same case. In fact, I avoided DSI/Sequential instruments until about 5 years ago because of these poorly made demos. Then I got one for myself and figured out where so many people go wrong.
That room is so well tuned for your voice. Also great synth review thanks
