After 40 years of MK's guitar hypnosis, I can fully admire the pleasure of Pick Withers'es drum playing and JI's bass.
Amongst great live performers, no one that i've seen is as calm as Mark Knopfler while doing the level of things he does.

This is the best DS formation. Alan Clark added depth to the music, and we still have the wonderful Pick Withers with his accurate drumming... For me, the peak of DS was the early 80s.

The percussiveness in his playing is what gets me. The snapping of strings, ever so slight muting. The feel he plays with is evident!

For me this was DS at their very best. I loved it when Alan Clark joined. Such a great sound that reminds me of my teenage years buying bootlegs on cassette tape and playing them to death in the car.

Those guitar chords were everything i ever wanted in a song. Simply put, this song is musically "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".
This version is so magical
The feel and light and shade from drummer Pick Withers are wonderful on this performance. His dynamics give the whole band a lift when needed and when he lays back gives them space to breathe.
He really was missed when he went. And the difference is just that, the dynamic command he had, which neither Terry Williams or Chris Whitten ever quite had, although they too were great drummers. Just not quite the same.

Totally agree on all counts. Terry and Chris both fantastic drummers who fitted in very well with the band but Pick had very difficult shoes to fill. Such a beautiful feel he gave to every Dire Straits song, the original in in my opinion the best drummer for the band.
Pick was the best, I loved watching him play on this clip. Love Dire Straights.
I am no drummer, or musician of any kind, but Pick's playing during the final guitar solo in Telegraph Road is probably my favorite drumming performance of all time. I don't know if there's any legitimate science behind this, though :-) I also like listening to Terry Williams, but I have a feeling he was playing "too much" at times, as if he was trying to compete for the spotlight with Mark.

My husband has had this song as his ringtone forever. Mark is truly one of those musicians who always stood out. There was always a magic to his sound. It still leaves me stunned and amazed!!

My Dad got me into Dire Straits when I was a kid always remember being in his van with him with the Straits on tape..he past away 14 years ago iam 52 and to this day I still listen to this band..really wish they would get back together they still have a lot of fans

Who can appreciate that before Knofler, this guitar sound was unknown.
It still sounds so new and fresh to my ears all these years down the road.
All you need to hear is a couple guitar notes, and you immediately know it's Mark. My favorite guitarist of all time!
In 80's , I was in Epsom shopping. Heard fab music and they were just playing in the Park there free..I loved them and still do. Bought Sultans of Swing that week 👍😊

Great to see this early version of this song with the original drummer. With MK he never plays a live song the same, he's always improvising to keep it fresh. Played this on his last tour and is still a classic. Class 🎸🎸

I've always said that Pick Withers was the best drummer DS ever had. The Alchemy performance is wonderful but Pick just has a feel that nobody else can mimic.

My favourite era of the band is when Pick was with them, and my favourite concert footage of them is that classic 79 rock palast show.
I just LOVE those 1st two albums. He has such an incredible groove !

I must admit the DS are not among my favourite bands, I mean I like very much the way MK plays and how he looks so humble in spite of being a legendary guitarist; but till now I only knew their hits such as 'Walk of Life', 'Money for Nothing' etc. This evening CZcams has let me know this song and it's left me SPEECHLESS. Dixième fois que j'écoute ce titre, pendant ce concert, et à chaque fois je découvre un son, un regard, un claquement de tonerre ou une syncope de la batterie, un ralentissement du rythme, le ronflement carré de la basse, tout qui s'emboîte à merveille pour notre plaisir émerveillé. La neuvième fois, j'étais concentrée sur le phrasé des mots, sur l'orgue, le tout, et le bonheur évident de MK à manager les musiciens, rien que cela, montrer son humour un peu cabotin au public, champagne et confetti. Quel concert attachant, quelle conjugaison de talents.

Man! Pick Withers was a great drummer...that fill he did in the beginning is a little different than the album, and the footwork on the bass drum looks really cool.
And the roll and cymbal crashes at the end of the song are so good!
