    I legit cheered when you dropped Lancer :D I freakin' love that game but haven't found a crew to play it with in a while.
    Good rec's btw but I have a couple extra myself: Numenera and the Cypher System in general seem easy to pick up and Numenera's setting is GORGEOUS. Also the physical book for the base system is top quality, came out of the box almost sparkling it was so clean. Secondly is Apocalypse Frame, a Lumen game a touch crunchier than Nova (which I felt was a bit too featherlight for my taste) that I've been looking into. Feels a bit like Battletech but more the Mechwarrior games instead of the tactical tabletop if that makes sense.
    Great vid my man o7 happy gaming :D

    It surprises me that almost no one knows about one of my favs. King Arthur Pendragon. It's set in the Arthurian time (obviously) and has an interesting skill roll system. It's still the higher, the better on the d20, but you need to roll below your skill level to succeed.
    Example: someone with an 18 in a skill succeeds on an 18 or lower. If they are opposing someone with, say, a 10 skill, the will have an advantage. But if the roll a 6 and the guy with the 10 rolls an 8, they still lose. It seems to work well.

      @davidmorgan6896 Před rokem +1

      Could be because Chaosium's Pendragon takes most of the Arthur fans. It uses BRP, like Cthulhu.

      Seconding. One of my groups I introduced to it are now playing it with one of them running.... New edition due out this year; prior editions available in PDF.

    • @WilliamHostman
      @WilliamHostman Před rokem +3

      @@davidmorgan6896 Chaosium's Pendragon is the one described. Chaosium published editions 1-4 (noting that 2E is literally unchanged from 1E), sold 4 to Green Knight, GK sold it back to Greg Stafford, who then did 5th, which went through 3 different publisher names, 2 of them owned by Greg, the third being Chaosium, and Chaosium being 6th. ALL of them use the opposed d20 mechanic, which is a derivative of BRP.

    • @davidmorgan6896
      @davidmorgan6896 Před rokem +2

      @@WilliamHostman thanks, my bad. I haven't played it since 1e. I would be reluctant to swap d100 for d20 because of the association with the Gygax Game

    • @WilliamHostman
      @WilliamHostman Před rokem

      @@davidmorgan6896 Understandable, especially if one doesn't know the history. If you've played any edition, it's still the same core. Prices changed a bit, a couple new skills, landholding has more abstraction, and successful romances using the Lover's Solo, since mid-4th ed, now grant some annual glory.

    You forgot one of the bigger and wonderful systems, Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE). Although the system is generic, there are hundreds of settings for it from sci-fi wild west (Deadlands: Lost Colony) to high fantasy (Savage Pathfinder) to pirates (50 Phantoms Deep) to horror (East Texas University). The system is around since 2003 and it is growing strong. The best part is, the core book is just 200 pages and within those pages you can find EVERYTHING from skills, to items, to monsters, to spells, and even GMs guide.
    Try it, you will LOVE it.

    If you want free fantastic and fun. Basic Fantasy RPG, it's like the perfect blend of 0e and B/X and infinitely tweakable to get it as close or far away from Ad&d or even later editions. The community is great and if you want it in print you pay around 5 bucks per book in softcover form, cause it's sold near at cost.

    GURPS but not Hero System? Even though GURPS ripped off Hero. GURPS does have much better source books though; better than any other game I've seen.
    You say flavourless like it's a bad thing. Personally, I avoid games with a setting. Cthulhu is OK as it's just Earth, but I wouldn't run anything tied to a game world because much of the fun is creating the setting.
    And how can you talk about SFRPGs without mentioning Traveller; the OG of sci-fi games? Rules light. A tonne of material, if you want it, and it's the only system I know where a character can die in chargen.

    How did you miss Palladium Books?
    They've been around since the 1970s. Palladium Fantasy is one of the long-lived near-D&D RPGs _and it's still in print._ Like your furries? _After The Bomb_ (formerly the TMNT RPG). Lots of kitchen sink stuff? _RIFTS!_ Supers? _Heroes Unlimited._ Horror? _Beyond The Supernatural_ (classic horror), _Nightbane_ (for the WOD fans), _Dead Reign_ (survival horror), and _Systems Failure_ (alien invaders). There's also _Splicers_ ( _Guyver_ means _The Terminator_ by way of _Dune_ ).
    You also completely missed _Pendragon_ and _Paladin_ as well as _Runequest_ and other games based off of Basic Roleplaying (COC) such as _Elric/Stormbringer/Corum._
    And you somehow whiffed about _Legend of the Five Rings_ HOW? Same with _Traveller_ (THE SF RPG!), _Gamma World_ (THE post-apocalypse RPG), _Mekton Zeta_ (THE mecha RPG, by R. Talsorian- the folks behind _Cyberpunk_ ), and that massive juggernaut that is _BattleTech_ over there (which has its own TRPG, _A Time Of War_ ).
    You've got at least three full _Conan_ licensed games out there (GURPS 2e, Conan OGL 1e/2e, Modiphius' version) and an AD&D module.
    _Basic Fantasy_ is out there, and it's FREE in digital and at-cost in print. _TORG_ is another multi-genre game (I prefer the original 90s edition), _Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play_ has multiple editions out there, and plenty of different _Star Wars_ versions to choose from (d6 preferred here).
    For God's sake, man! If you're going to offer alternatives, at the least mention the more obvious ones FIRST!

    Lots of great recommendations, but... why the hell did you have to slander GURPS like that? GURPS already gets enough flak from the community, 99% of whom have never even LOOKED at the game, never mind played it.
