As a rink owner I appreciate your honest review. I check all toe stops especially kids, if you have a worn out toe stop or (jam plug) can do some damage to the floor as well as inlines however we do allow those and even rent them. I think they shoulda let you use them if you didn’t have the brake. But onto the floor it’s amazingly hard to upkeep a hardwood floor. Ours is 75 years old this year and isn’t Perfect by any means but we’ve put a lot into it to keep it up. I’ve skated on concrete floors and that skate court stuff id take a beat up wooden floor anyday or just skate outside lol anyways appreciate your review!

the rink is very old school and has too many rules for it to be that low quality. the floor is already old, if you aren’t planning on upkeeping or replacing, why even bother with trying to preserve the floor now?

I used to skate at Lanham Seabrook for at least 15 - 20 years but last experience several years ago changed my outlook of the "New Management" that is in place. Stopped by the rink for the early "old school" skate session that is held on Saturday's for more experienced skaters and the "Security" guard that was at the door stated that she had to inspect my backpack. She looks inside and saw my Gatorade and her reaction was as if I had a concealed weapon. She stated that I could not bring my Gatorade in the rink which, given the new management was understandable, but the overall tone/delivery was unacceptable given that I had skated there for about 2 decades. Needless to say, the older woman that was at the booth collecting monies for entry could not even look at me because she knew me and not that I was looking for a "pass", just looking to be spoken to in a professional/respectful manner. Needless to say, I complied and drove to Crofton Skate Center and that was my last experience at Lanham Seabrook. I used to dig the vibe there and the music but how the staff treats their patron's is a turn-off. No issues with driving further to skate. Understanding your "audience" is a key to a successful business

    • @danburdick2749
      @danburdick2749 Před 6 měsíci

Thank you for the excellent background story! I understand inspecting skates, and even outlawing blades to an extent to protect the floor and I'm happy to comply. Rudeness is just over the top though, and staff should be re-trained as admissions is the first thing you see when entering a rink. The floor is expensive to maintain and recoat. Skates used outdoors and not cleaned can bring in dirt and small rocks wedged into the stoppers, and then they scratch the floor when used (or people who remove the stops and don't use plugs). A rink around me forbid rollerblades back in the late 80's/early 90's and lost enough customers to cause it to close. It reopened in 2002 with new owners, and they check skates when you enter. They would even wrap cloth tape around rollerblade stoppers if they marked the floor. We do have to try sneaking in Gatorade for my son who gets dehydrated and overheats. I know they are trying to make some money on concessions, but they don't even have a drinking fountain. It is a small rink though, but with only 4 rinks in my state we try to support them (we've lost SO many rinks in the last 2 decades). I love trying new rinks, but I have to drive over 2 hours one-way to get to anything out of my state. You have it good in the northeast with so many options!

  • @brianacevedo4605

Our local small town family owned roller rink doesn’t allow in lines. The reasons being is that the floor isn’t finished like with that glossy stuff so the edges of the in lines would tear up the wood floor. But it’s most people who come don’t own their own skates and don’t mind in being quads.

The fake security officer assaulted my 11 year old giving my son a fractured jaw. The police was called, the owner and security officer were in trouble. I did get a lawyer. Which I get a bit, when I first went to a rink I didn't think they'd let me use my skates because I didn't have wheels specifically for indoors, but they didn't care. Never thought about breaks, but makes sense, they'd be more likely to gouge or scratch up the floor if they were worn off.

A local rink, now closed, did kind of the same. No blades allowed and to really help move things along they never coated the floor. Instead, they used rosin, a carcinogen, on the floor. That was 25 yrs ago. The whole place was bought, torn down and made into a more profitable free parking lot for a nursing home. I have 4 sets on inline speed skates…three of which never were on pavement and only used inside on maple. One set was used occasionally on a bike path. Three of the four sets were purchased at local skating rinks along with fistfuls of bearings and supplies. Imagine all the little kids getting blades, going there and not being able to use them. The adult skate looked kind of busy, but the population base is large in MD…what does Friday and Saturday night look like?

im not trying to size up one against your experience i just wanna tell mine in what i think is the worst skating rink i ever experienced. in OK there's a WAY worse skating rink that only allows inside skates or rentals, and they check that by the toe stop which is....pretty bad considering their toe stops weren't much better when it comes to wear and tear, entry was 5 dollars, and 5 dollars extra for rentals, i checked in the man at front desk asked "did you bring your own" i said yes and then he inspected them, he was surprised by what i brought, but then he looked at the toe stops and asked "did you wore these outside" i said "yeah i wore them a couple times outside" to then he replies "sorry you cant have outside skates" i was annoyed but mostly dumbfounded i told him i only wore them outside a couple of times" he then says "its just policy". so i had to pay 5 dollars extra for rentals...i thought to myself this place look alot like my hometowns rink before it closed but...worse FAR worse, i come in to pop music playing but more of the cheesy stuff like early days justin beiber, katy perry, friday by rebecca black, that kinda stuff, cant recommend anything else, i was dreading walking in but i told my self its probably not that bad as soon as we get rentals, and jam around....no...i jinxed myself thinking that, i went over got a rental and tried to tie my skate, one of my skates had a ripped shoelace and the other skate didnt have the right laces to fit correctly, they were two difference laces...deep breathe i sayed to myself just ask for a new pair, i got one and it had the right laces, right size, no ripped gauntlet or whatever you call that plastic bit on the lace, so i wen on the floor which is elevated, witch i dont really recommend because it makes it a bit difficult to get on the floor for beginners but ive been doing it for a while so what ever, i start skating and i noticed the floor is bumpy, like really bumpy it kinda fent like skating outside, i look down and i see the floor peeling,, to witch i look at the whole floor and IT HAS HOLES IN IT so i decide to just get out but before i could i tripped out of nowhere (sort of) it felt like one of my wheels stopped out of nowhere i looked more carefully at the skate and it was rusted, the bolts, the trucks were dirty, same as the bearings, i was suppressed to find that out considering i went two laps around for it to just give out just now, i just decided to leave.
(also little side note the food they only have was small chips and loose candy the bathrooms were just closets with toilets in them, and the tables to eat at were all different kinds, i wished i was making this up but the thing looked like it was holding on to dear life)

Earbuds (and headphones) = safety issue. Good rinks don't allow them. If you've got stuff in/on your ears, you generally can't hear any important announcements.
Recording should be illegal! Yeah, it's a public place, but most people who record do so for social media posts, not just to share among family. The wrong person gets their hands (well, eyes) on that video you took, you could be endangering someone's life!
Phones are dangerous because it's usually idiots use them. Some brat who couldn't skate had his phone out, on the floor, going the wrong damn way, and slammed into me. Broke two knuckles on my finger AND severed the tendon because he hit me so hard. The surgery it would take to get it repaired, I can't afford (thank you American healthcare) so, I'll have a crooked finger for the rest of my life. Even if YOU can skate, that doesn't mean everyone can. What happens when a kid - or, really, anyone who can't skate - runs into you while you're using your phone and knocks the phone out of your hand and another skater rolls over it, smashing it? I'm willing to bet you're not going to be too happy. I've only seen it happen once...but once was enough. They had to get everyone off the floor to sweep up the pieces.

    Worst? More like BEST!
    Well...maybe?
Since it was adult night, it's kind of hard to tell.
I don't know who the hell invented Skate Mates, but they deserve a fate worse than death! Wouldn't imagine many adults would use them, even if they do have them there.
    Anyway...key points here...
    INLINES:
1 - I've NEVER heard of the "back brake" being an issue at rinks (a few at my local roller rink have California brakes - a back brake on their quads, for those who've never heard of them).
I HAVE, however, heard of rinks banning inlines for SAFETY.
A - Many popular rinks often have old school skaters.
Old school skaters typically roll fibers.
Those with inlines usually don't have a dedicated rink pair.
A rock lodged into your inlines comes loose on the rink...and, well, we've had SEVERAL broken bones as those with the fiberglass (or clay) wheels hit those damn pebbles. With no "give" to their wheels to roll over that pebble, hitting one is like skating directly into a cement wall. I don't understand rinks that allow inlines.
B - A LOT of the kids and teens (and, yes, sadly, I've seen a few adults, too) think "I fast, I skate!" They don't understand *anything* about CONTROL. They just think that, yep, if they can go fast, they're skating/know how to skate.
    STOP CHECK:
I WISH my rink would check people's toe stops. They say they do...giant sign out front...yet I've never seen them do it once.
It was hard to tell in the video, but a maple rotunda floor? Those things are hella expensive. ONE PLANK can be upwards of $100+ for the straight-aways...never mind the curved ones at the end of the rink...depending on width and length.
That being said, even plain old planks anyone can get at a home improvement store - sanded down for smoothness, with or without a coating - can get costly when you're having to pull out old ones and put new ones down every other week because "Someone gouged the floor again".
If there's a hole for the plug - with no plug - or someone tries to come in with a stop that's so worn down the metal is showing, a simple fall can cause SERIOUS damage to the floor. Which could be why they check more regularly there...and possibly, at least one reason, why the floor is janky.
    SNACK BAR:
    That....would be my dream!
Both of my local rinks offer pretzels (with or without cheese) and hot dogs.
Note: The dogs are pre-made in advance by staff, wrapped, frozen, and a select few are pulled for each session, and then they're just microwaved when someone orders one. Alternately either leaving cold spots or the bun is soaked from the steam & the dog will - literally - burn your mouth (NOT just "really hot" but physically burn. Regulars have learned to wait for them to cool down...newbies, sadly, not so much).
Everything else (chips, pop, cookies, and candy) comes from vending machines or the "prize booth" from ticket games (individual Starbursts, Tootsie Rolls, and other small, individually wrapped, candies) and are worth 5 tickets or can be paid for in cash for 5 cents each.
I'd LOVE to have the selection that rink does! Maybe I'd actually eat at the snack bar instead of before or after skating. The only thing we get at the rink are the drinks these days. Which get stuck in the old, worn-out, machine at least 40% of the time, so we have to get management to "rescue" them for us. UGH!!

Because of customers unwillingness to do maintenance on their skates any rink that does not inspect personal skates is taking a big chance on damage to their floors. The guys who run this rink are all nice guys and I have never known them to be rude to anyone. Its a good rink and the floor is not trash. In fact, by the time I leave the rink there is not a parking space left and it is well over an acre of parking space. If it was so bad the people would not be coming weekly. So in my opinion, this is just sour grapes because they don’t allow inline skates. My opinion is htat rules are rules and if I am not willing to abide by them then I just won’t come. That’s the mature thing to do. A completely full parking lot speaks for itself.

I am shocked by this review, it reeks of bias, hubris and entitlement! I am shocked by what you say and why the review is . Let’s see according to you and the video - it’s clean, the music is great, one of the best sound systems you have encountered, the atmosphere is good and this is the worst skating rink you have ever been to? Oh and someone actually saw that you were upset and they came to acknowledge you? It seems that your issue is with not being able to use your own skates- I get it . Perhaps you can call and see if a place allows that and if not then not bother to show up. You also said the snacks were boring , not sure if in a post- pandemic world there are exciting snacks to be had at such establishments . You are not reviewing skating rinks but actually looking for a place where you can what you want to do- the height of privilege. Full disclosure- I skate here all the time and I have seen this place really transform from the previous owners. It has been totally modernized and we have even rented the place for two different kids parties . It’s clean, safe, music is great, kids find plenty of things to snack on and when I am not skating I love the retro games . Then again, I tend to go to establishments for what they provide not what I wish they provided .

Why would someone know to call about a place not allowing inlines? That's not a basic expectation. Do you call a restaurant and ask if common allergens are on the menu? That's a basic expectation.

Yeah I love cruising as well haha im not a speed skater at all. And it was more of a problem with the way it was handled and the customer service rather than just “the rules being enforced.” I also love both quad and inlines skates but when a rink cuts out one or the other then in my opinion it’s not a good rink because you cut out an entire group of skaters. Especially considering the problem they had with inline skates is the brake and my Inlines have no brake at all. It made no sense why you wouldn’t be able to ride them.
