    Hello again Haley ! I watched your video of your bathroom makeover in collab with Sarah ! WHAT A GORGEOUS HOOSIER ! I don’t know if I have seen an all wood one . I always see the ones with enamel… this is gorgeous !
    Love the history of them. I knew a little, but it was nice to hear more. I’m in Upper Central New York State , antiques are everywhere with HIGH PRICES. What a great price on that one. The home my husband and I are in is my family home. You mentioned the “Folk Victorian style” and that is what this house is. It was built in the 1880’s. We have been in it for the past 19 years. Slowly making it more rustic/farmhouse. My Mother was more into all the new design styles. My Dad had laid all oak hardwood floors throughout in the early 1950’s , then “wall to wall carpet” came into style , so in the 60’s they got covered ! 😫. I remember them a little, the upstairs was left wood. So after we moved in, I took the carpet up and had my Dad’s hardwood floor refinished and they are gorgeous!
    Our average room size is 11x14, so many rooms, but small. Tall narrow windows, short ceiling upstairs. LOL!!! I love it because it is HOME and my husband loves it also!
    It is so interesting to see all you young ladies loving the same style as I do at 65 ! My Mother and I had totally different decor styles for homes. She had the ideal older home trying to make it look new…I had the newer home trying to make it look older ! LOL!!!
    Truly enjoyed this video !!!

      @handandhomemade  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi!! I’m so happy you enjoyed the video! I bet your home is STUNNING! 🥰 I loveeee the tall narrow windows!! And I know the oak hardwood floors that your dad laid are breathtaking as well. It seems like everyone in the 60s got them covered with carpet 😅🤣 i guess that was the going thing!
      And yes I get tickled how there is such a movement of people in my generation trying to get back to an older style of home as well as a more simple way of living! 🥰 I’m so thankful there’s been more of a push for it because I’m all about restoring older homes and buildings! I wish there were more in my area of Mississippi!

    I have three: all used in my kitchen. They are my only cabinets except a circa 1900-1910 oak desk with flush drawers which I fashioned into a sink
    base (complete with fabric skirt).
    My cabinets are Sellers and I have one regular and one shorter possum belly.
    I also have a narrower 36” Diamond from Shelbyville IN which has a wood top.
    Placed next to my sink base and elevated on wood block extensions I screwed in, it extends the “ counter” top. I use the narrow cabinet et for dishes.
    The blue slag glass of my other Sellers is more unusual and I based my paint color off it ❤
    That one is for baking and extra jars.
    I also have it PACKED with canned goods as I don’t have a pantry.
    The possum belly cabinet stores honey and tea/coffee as well as bottled water and the electric hot water.
    Love my unfitted old time style new kitchen!

      Aww I love that! I would love to have an unfitted kitchen in an old farmhouse one day. I like being able to move my furniture around 🥰 I have only ever seen pictures of hoosiers with blue slag glass! I just know it is stunning!! Mine holds all my canning equipment, and I recently bought an old hutch to use as my pantry!

    You have a beautiful Hoosier cabinet. I especially love that it isn’t painted. The
    wood looks lovely against your wall color. You could put spring flowers, vintage looking graphic, Christmas ornaments etc peeking through the flour window. This would be an unexpected surprise & so cute. Tfs

    • @handandhomemade
      @handandhomemade  Před 2 lety

      Those are such great suggestions! I didn’t even think about putting some fun things inside as an unexpected surprise 🤩 the fact that it was unpainted was one of the first things that drew me to it! It’s so hard to find one that’s not been touched by paint 💕

  • @cynthianelson7401
    @cynthianelson7401 Před 2 lety +1

    Look for a food safe paint or coating to do the inside of the flour sifter. I wouldn't do anything to the outside. It you couldn't find anything you could possibly get a metal fabricator to make a insert so you could use it for what it was meant for. On the second draw it looked like there were cross cuts on the dividers. That probably had more inserts for silverware. You probably could recreate those.
    Beautiful piece of furniture. ENJOY IT!

    Congratulations on your cabinet! I had a Hoosier build by the Hoosier co. It was originally gray with floral decals on the doors, but had been painted white. It had an enamel top. We had it stripped and painted white and used it for many years until we moved to Arizona, and it just didn’t seem to fit with the houses out there. We did move back to Georgia, however and totally miss it! It was so handy. We used it to store desk supplies and other things we used on a regular basis.
    I was dumb and threw away our flour sifter, but it was still a useful piece.

    So beautiful! My mom has a Hoosier that we inherited from someone. On hers, the top cabinets have glass, and the table top has some type of metal on it. I never saw it as a sturdy piece of furniture. It always looked fragile to me. I'm not sure if it's as old as yours or not.

    I live in Moorhead MN currently. I found one at the antique store in our center mall.... love it . It was around $100 the inside is paint gray and outside is white with the enamel top. My brother is fixing one of the drawers for me . Mine doesn't have the flour sifter but my roll top works but sticks al little. I also have a vintage 3 other vintage metal cabinets that i found and one has the bread drawer... also have an enamel top table... and several black and white enamelware dish pieces.

    Beautiful hoosier! I'm from Ontario Canada! We are building a house and I will have a nice pantry (6'x7') I was thinking about putting a hoosier cabinet inside the pantry to store baking supplies. I'd love to know if you get the flour sifter working and if it works well to store flour. I'm worried the flour would go stale.
