  • The International Climate Change Development Initiative visited Bariga LCDA to join other stakeholders across Nigeria to urge citizens to vote for candidates with credible climate action plans.
    "Climate change" refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. But human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.
    About 5 months ago, we experienced here in Nigeria flooding that displaced over 1.4 million people, killed over 603 people, and injured more than 2,400 people. About 82,035 houses had been damaged, and 332,327 hectares of land had also been affected.
    As the general election approaches, the underrepresentation of climate change impact in the 2023 election campaigns and party manifestos should be a thing of concern.
    Climate change issues are too important to be left in the hands of climate deniers.
    Candidates at all levels must make climate change a campaign topic and explain how they will handle it.
    In the final state, Olumide the co-founder of ICCDI Africa encourages community leaders to vote for candidates that have a solid climate action plan.
