I found a great deal on a sage 6.3qt Le Creuset oval Dutch Oven. I made beef bourguinon last night for guests and it was perfect. The efficiency of cast iron is impressive- cooked really fast and the meat fell apart after less than three hrs. Cleaned up like a dream. Beautiful piece of kit that you can go straight to the table with. Spend the money.
Best Dutch oven overview ever. Great work, as always.
I’ve used Staub and le Creuset and you can’t go wrong with either. I paid the higher price for le Creuset because I like the loud colours and interior. Seeing flavour pop off the light surface is very satisfying.
I love the “crackling” effect. The Hyatt Regency in Chicago employed some Le Creuset braisers and Dutch ovens in their restaurant kitchen and they all had that lovely crackled “vintage” look to them them that showed years and years of continuous service. I would have paid money for those!
This was quite helpful to confirm I made the right choice! I purchased a Staub a few days ago because of the amazing sale price. I'd had my eye on a Le Creuset for months but something kept holding me back. I'm on a meat-only diet and getting very moist, slow-cooked meat is crucial for variety and being able to enjoy those tougher (and maybe less expensive) cuts. Thank you for this review!
This was actually super helpful, for a quick little tutorial! Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Now that was a great review. Thank you!
Thank you for this review! Very informative!!!
Went to college with this guy. Great job man.
Thanks Chad!
thnx very informative. Hadn't heard of the Combekk.
I just bought the Combekk from Home Goods at half the price of retail. I’m excited to get started with this one. It looks heavy duty.
Possibly one of the best informative videos ever made.
Great video. Thanks for the information!
Owned two Staub items for years, they are amazing. I felt the competitors but they seemed less heavy and well made.
Thank you for giving advice about size! Gtk that 5 qt fits whole chicken!
I have a cast iron Dutch oven that has the moisture bumps on the lid. If I ever had to replace it, unlikely as it is over 100 years old and still going strong I would get one with bumps.
Also Staub has really cool handle options for there lids!
The best new pot in my kitchen I love it

Check out the Le Creuset outlet stores. Their prices are great to begin with and their Black Friday sale was great.
I just purchased my first Staub today, 30 cm cocotte, hope to have a great journey with it.... to try my Malaysian fusion cooking

Just purchased a cherry 5qt enameled dutch oven from Staub at Crate&Barrel for $199 and couldn't be happier. I kept going back and forth between that and Le Cruset but ultimately went with Staub after it went on sale.
Have you tried making bread in it? I'm wondering how the basting feature might affect bread.
I just bought a Le Crueset 5.25 enameled dutch oven at Williams Sonoma for $199! So looking forward to my first one!
Got a Le Creuset for Christmas. I am very very (very very very) happy with it. And the bright inside is on purpose- you can watch so much better the browning f.ex.

Excellent advice. I think i am going to go for the Staub. I already have the smaller Le Creuset oval dutch oven - i love it.

I got a nice 6-7 quart oval dutch oven that was pre-stained and chipped (from years of love) at Habitat home store for $7. Oh

I saw an exact Staub at my local Marshall’s for half the price. Definitely going back to get it!! Hope it’s still there!

Hey, I just ordered a staub on sale. I will be cooking my Indian style curries. Did I do right??
Nice review. But why not comparing the ovens with Le Creuset's best:and most classic model: the Doufeu (with spikes)?
Have LC and Staub, I prefer the Staub for my sourdough breads.
I have Le Creuset and Staub both...the oldest is from the 70s and it's holding up better than my staub which has multiple chip points along the edges...in total I have 12 🤪and the Le Creuset are my go to pans...workhorses and hit up estate sales TJ Maxx marshalls and Tuesday Mornings! Thank you so much, Chef. The reason I asked is because from Staub's website it said never to "cook" without greasing the pan... Thanks again for your prompt response and the great video.

I have a Staub. Use it at least a couple of times a week. Sometimes 4/5 times a week (winter). Love it. Best cooking buy I’ve ever made. Use it for stew, ragu, curry, cassoulet etc.
The black interior doesn’t discolour like La Creuset but it will get dull and off colour on the bottom. After I wash it and dry it, I take a piece of kitchen towel and wipe it with some oil. Like new again and makes it slightly non-stick.
Buy any of them. Well worth it.
If you do not have enamel, you can't cook acidic dishes like tomato based ones
Great tips thank you! :)

I’m considering getting a Dutch oven... and probably will go for the Le Creuset brand. I may have to get 2.... since I want to be able to cook a chicken or small roast (4.5-5.5qt?) and meals for 2 (2.75-3.5qt?) That don’t have too much leftovers. (I’m ok with enough leftovers for a second meal, but not more.)
Tanya S, I agree with your size choices. Here is a handy chart of what size of Dutch oven to get: evkitch.com/DutchOvenGuide - I hope this helps! EverythingKitchens.com can ship your Le Creuset Dutch ovens for free as well : )
i love smaller sizes
I have used le crueset for several years, several pieces and they’re all perfect still. Couldn’t be happier.
I love the look of staub but my first try was an utter failure. After a few uses the glass coat on the bottom of the skillet was completely shattered and falling away. I assume it was surface prep and not indicative of the overall quality but i swapped it for a le cruset and it’s still perfect years later. Ive had stuff hit that I thought for sure would chip, nothing yet though.
It’s a shame I wanted to like the staub and would have bought a cocotte from them next.
I have two Staub cocottes and have never had any problem. Can you take your Dutch oven back for a refund? I've never heard of this happening.
What did you do to it? That isn't supposed to happen. Either user error or you got a defective pot.
@@jamesaroeuett1567 nada it was pampered. I have about dozen le cruset pieces that get used every day. Literally used the staub only a few times compared to thousands of times for the others. Everyday use.
Like I said, I really wanted to like the brand, love the look. It will be a while before I take a chance on one.

@@danh8302 Glad it worked out for at William-Sonoma. I just don't know why the product was defective. I have never heard of this before since Staub is such a good brand.
I have tried LC and Staub, and prefer Staub for its inside coating that makes food just taste better. The Dutch brand you reviewed didn't just have "some" of the drip points but a couple of drip rings which you didn't pick up on. These are for moistening the top of the food, as are the nubs. I have some American cast iron by Wagner that have similar drip rings so I am familiar with them. Good job.
My Dutch Uncle had a Dutch Oven over which he gave advice.

Hi chef another informative video. So glad you didn't add lodge in this list. I had one and only for six months! Two pieces of enamel chipped off and we probably ate them and that upset me greatly. Would not trust them again! Didn't even want a replacement they tried to give me. I wonder what you think of tramontina brand. These look really nice but unfortunately out of my price range. Also what size would you recommend for a two person family? Thanks so much for taking the time. I love to watch your videos
Sophie, so sorry to hear about your poor experience with Lodge! Chipping can be an issue with any enameled cast iron, but there definitely are better enamels out there. Unfortunately, I've never got to try Tramontina. After personally using inexpensive enameled cast iron and higher price enameled cast iron (both personally and at work) I'm a believer of you get what you pay for - the higher end brands like Staub & Le Creuset live up to their price tag and the quality makes it 100% worth it. Black Friday is just around the corner and we may have some brand name Dutch ovens at a very affordable price 😉😉😉 As for a two person family, I would recommend between a 4qt and 6qt size. If the Staub develops a seasoning layer, then should it be treated like a regular cast iron surface? Definitely taught me a few things -- didn't know that Staub is actually French (it sounded German initially); it's studded lid makes me want to try it out; the dark surface being more forgiving to scratches. Thanks for the great video!
Staub is made in Alsace, an area which used to belong to Germany, in the eastern border of France.
Theres a dofeu option from le creuset as well. As i see it they acrually invented it.
i live for my Staub. I consider it far superior in design and it performs like a champ.
I though this was a great review. Staub' s interior finish doesn't stain & it seems to be more non-stick than LC. The heavy lid creates natural basting & the standard knob is metal. Staub is the bomb. It doesn't come in as many colours as LC... but who cares?
I have both. They are both equally superb in their own ways. Really shouldn't be compared imo. They are just designed differently.
stirling I’ve had both and had problems with staub but not le cruset.

Bought a matte black Staub 4 quart cocotte for $99 from sur le table. I liked it so much I bought another then Crate and Barrel put the 7 quart Staub on sale for $119!!! I bought it instantly. I now have 3 matte black Staub that I wouldn't trade for any other cast iron cookware. I do have some cheap lodge skillets but they don't compare to the Staub quality.
MvF JET when did you buy it from Crate and Barrel?!

Ok a bare cast iron is awesome and not hard at all to take of in fact it will only get better with time if properly taken care of I have one from the 1920's one circa 1915-1950 and one 1940-60.
All of them work beutiful and you get a certain pleasure in cooking with something that old that still works as good if not better then a comparible brand new one.
But enameled ones do have there place.
A little easier to take care of and most importantly when your doing a long cook with high acidic foods.
The biggest con with enameled it can chip and although more durable than nonstick by far you can scratch them with metal utinsals unlike bare Cast Iron.
I couldn't afford any of these. So I bought a Lodge dutch oven for $60 at Target. I use it all the time and I love cooking in it. Since I haven't been able to compare my Lodge to the expensive brands I don't know the difference. One day, hopefully a long time from now I was told that I will inherit my step moms bright yellow Le Creuset. So until then I will happily use my affordable Lodge.
Im Sharala I have a Le Creuset my friend has a Lodge, don’t waste your money it’s all hype the Lodge is just as good
@@daviddemento367 Thanks, makes me feel even better!!
Indeed it’s LE creuset and also it is not “cruisay” but “kreuzè”. You should also mention that in the lid of the staub you can put icecubes. That way the steam condensates a lot faster and your dish will be even more moisture and tender. Greetings from Belgium.

hi. how about cuisinart cast Iron Dutch Oven
I just purchased a Staub Wide Oval Dutch Oven, 6 1/2-QT which should come in next week. I already have a round one and thought it would be nice to have a oval. My concern is an oval shape and round burners, did I make a mistake? I assumed the cast iron would distribute the heat. What are your thoughts?
I've used an oval oven on round burners and have had good luck! The heat does distribute well and I didn't notice too many cold spots. I hope this helps :)
I have a staub 13 qt - wouldn't trade it for anything and I think it's amazing
My wife got one on sale 6 years ago. It is probably the most commonly used pot in the house. I liked it so much I bought the 4 qt for making batches of sauce. Staub interiors are far superior to the white enamel coatings that discolor over time.
What's the diameter on the 13 qt?
Wow ..13 qts?!!! That must weigh a ton😁😁😁
I bought the biggest Staub I could find to show off to my younger, and better cook brother. I do use it and it's fantastic. Just wish my skills matched the pot. LOL
Could You Make A review On The German Cookware Fissler? Thank You..
Nice but not enough choices. I am experienced with Staub and Le Crusette. Both are nice. However I currently own a Lodge. I am more than happy with it. I have not used it for anything that the others would have done better. No it doesn't have a warranty but for 50 to 80 dollars I can buy 4 of them for less than one of the French models.
The Staub can take higher temperatures: different knob material!
You can change the knob on a LeCreuset.
Why does no one know about those 3 bumps on the underside of the Le Creuset lid: At 7:10 in this video I can see 2 of them, 1 is at 6:00 and 1 is at 10:00. I know there's a 3rd at 2:00 but I can't see it here. I got the 7 1/4 qt oven and can see the difference. Orient the lid one way and steam can get out, orient it another and steam can't get out. I've asked around but no one knows about it. What's up with that?
Adobo chicken!!🥰
I have yet to see a single video showing how the Le Creuset lid has 3 equidistant ridges to keep the lid from being perfectly flush with the pot. They're pretty small but you can easily see them if you look. I can actually see one of them in this video when he shows the Le Crueset lid.
You had me at Finnish/Dutch!
Combekk for me.
I have two Lodge dutch ovens (one for inside & one for outside cooking) and have used one to cook in and it worked perfectly for me. It requires more work to clean, but that is okay with me. Those you show is nice, but I would be worried about the chipping, and short life span.
Well said. I have two Lodge Dutch ovens a 5qt and a 7qt and not are wonderful and they “wear like iron” lol
Can you build up a thick seasoning on staubs just like in a bare cast iron?
Zachary, the inside of Staub is also enameled, just black colored enamel. I hope this helps!
Good review!
I like how the staub has the raised lip around the lid, so you can put hot coals on top of it for baking. Not that you'd actually do that, but it's a nice traditional design.
what size is the oval staub in this video
Hi Michael, we used the 8.5qt Staub in this video found here: evkitch.com/2IdB3R5
Staub also has a black matte exterior option on some of their Cocotte cookware. Don't assume these are bare seasoned metal, they are definitely coated with a matte ceramic coating, inside and out. Most Staubs are glossy on the outside.
I've had Le Cruset with the smooth interior light coloured smooth enamel, and it worked well for years. But over the years and a few accidental "burnings", the surface gets harder to scrub clean (with a non-scratch 3M scouring sponge). About once a year I needed to use "Bartender's Friend" to eliminate stubborn browned areas. Each year it got harder to clean. Still not bad, and it did not affect cooking, it just got harder to clean completely and became less non-stick than I would have liked or assumed.
I just bought a round Staub 7qt Cocotte with their standard black matte interior and glossy "Grenadine" exterior like in this video. I have not tried it yet, but I will tonight (browning a whole chicken - then braising in a red Thai curry sauce). So I can't comment on long-term use, or ease-of-cleaning.
Kindly advise if I can bake breads using my Staub French Oven and if the pan needs to be greased prior into the oven. Thank you.
Mary, yes - you can bake bread in your Staub. I'd recommend using parchment paper instead of oil (oil can burn and possibly damage the pot and smell up the kitchen). This is my favorite parchment paper and dispenser: bit.ly/3rcnJhy -Chef Austin
Will the parchment paper needs to be lightly greased?
@@maryjieh38 Hi Mary, the parchment will not stick to the bread so the oil is not necessary :)
What size is the Staub oval here? Is it the 6 quart or 7 quart model? Thanks.
Hey Nick - that is the 7qt model you're seeing! We can ship it for free to you: www.everythingkitchens.com/staub-oval-cocotte-7qt-grenadine-1103387.html
Staub has the best enamel, hands down
Have you tried the Milo brand dutch oven? Those seem interesting for the price, although I'm guessing they must be made in China or Korea for only $120 for 5.5 qt.
How long will the enamel last if I use it daily.
Forever if you take a proper care of it (non abrasive washing, heating on low wt some oil, using wooden/silicon utensils) :). Enjoy the healthy cooking!
Why Combekk for your 3rd brand, in particular - is there something special about these compared to, say, Dansk?
Relznuk - we love Dansk! Combekk is comparable to the other two brands in terms of build quality. Dansk is enamel on steel (compared to enamel on cast iron) and wouldn't be too-fair of comparison. I hope this helps!
I've never tried a Staub because my 60 year old Le Creuset flame oval is still the most-used item in my kitchen and I see no reason to change!
If I’m going to have this thing for a lifetime then it better be durable. Will the ceramic chip if I accidentally drop the lid on or from banging a spoon on the side?
Hey AlergicToSnow, All enamel-coated pans have the possibility of chipping if accidentally dropped. I will say that these pans we used in the video are probably the highest-grade enamel coatings on the market - these pans are used by our employees at Everything Kitchens on a regular basis and I haven't seen any flaw in the enamel. I personally have a vintage Le Creuset skillet in my kitchen and I love it - it did have a couple of chips in it when I purchased it (it is over 50 years old), but have not had any damage to it for the 6 years I've owned it. Some years back, America's Test Kitchen also said the Le Creuset also was the toughest and most durable enameled cast iron surviving plunges in cold water out of the oven, metal utensil scrapes, and banging on the sides of the pan with utensils. I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions - Full Dutch Oven Review and Pics: evkitch.com/Top3DutchOvens -Chef Austin 👨🍳
My first Le crueset Dutch oven pot fell out of my hands, hit the floor n cracked into two perfect halves 😂. It was not even a hard floor.
Round or oval - how do I choose?
This is from our 5 Dutch Oven Tips article: "Should you get a round Dutch oven or an oval Dutch oven? That depends on your stove. Typical stoves are going to have circle shaped burners, so a circle Dutch oven would naturally fit on that shape burner. You can get an oval shape, but you'll face uneven cooking if you don't have a large enough burner. The large oval shape will typically hang over the perimeter of the circle burner, but some stoves will be equipped with super-sized circle burners that accommodate larger oval Dutch ovens. Gas stoves may have a specialty elliptical shape gas burner that would work well too. If you're fortunate enough to have such a stove, go for the oval if you'd like! Also, if you primarily want to use your Dutch oven in the oven - say for baking bread or roasting chicken - then shape won't be an issue because it will evenly heat in the oven." more tips here: evkitch.com/DutchOvenGuide
I have both Staub and Le Creuset. They're both great but, I've found over time the Staub holds up better. I used to fry chicken in the Le Creuset and one day I hadn't noticed but, a half dollar size piece of white enamel popped of into the cooking oil and while I was eating glass-like shards of enamel were getting between my teeth and gum. I don't have to tell you how painful that was. the white enamel looks pretty but, I'll never use it for frying again.
It's tartar you silly. Dentist is calling😉
I am sorry you had this painful experience! Sounds like a nightmare! Popping enamel only happens when the heat was too high. Medium heat is all you need and all they can take.
I've had the opposite experience. My LeCreuset pieces have held up very well over the past 7 years or so, just some discolouration. They still cook perfectly and clean up easily. My Staub is chipped despite not being used very often. It's heavier than my Le Creuset and I'm not a fan of the dark interior with my cooking style.
Why didn’t you consider Lodge?
Hi I purchased my first Dutch oven, have the same lid of your second and third one you should in the video, but white finish from the inside. Can I use it on my glass electric stove?? Kitchen aid stove top, and on any temperature??
Jamie, we have a KitchenAid glass stove-top in our kitchen, so I think it'll work just fine. You want to use medium-high heat at the maximum, avoid using high heat. The heavy cast iron heats up more slowly, but will retain its heat while cooking. I hope this helps!

Degrees - it works just great. Had over two years.
I have a three le creuset pans, a couple of staub pans and in the past I owned some no-name enameled cast iron pans (ie very inexpensive) and NOTHING has performed or held up like my le creuset pans. I'm all about saving money if I can get a no-name brand of similar quality, and I've scored often using that logic, but my no-name enameled pans stained and looked nasty no matter how I cleaned them within a year. My le creuset pans have been in action for two years or more and still look like new, both inside and out. Staub is ok but the finish they use on the inside results in more sticking and it does not clean up as easily. It has a fairly rough surface which holds onto "stuff" - I have to soak them then scrub them and I often have to do it again (and again) to get the bottom really clean, especially if I used them to sear before braising. My le creuset pans - I kid you not - can have whatever you can imagine stuck on after a sear or bake, I soak them for 15 minutes in hot, soapy water, give them a swish with a sponge and they are CLEAN. Nothing left behind - it all just falls off. I don't want to believe they are worth the exorbitant prices, but honestly? IME they really are. I have never cooked with such excellent pans. Save your cash and just get one if you must, but really, IMO le creuset enameled cast iron is the bomb of cookware.
Staub is better than Le Creuset. Hands down imo.
Agreed!
Agreed, plus I have always thought the LeCrueset colors garish and just awful! They do not belong in my decor! I adore the Staub "Marin" color, a lovely royal blue, and the lovely shape that together make me happy. Even the black, the cream, and several other colors are lovely in this shape.
A Staub vid shows the third coat of enameling which makes the finish of some models have more depth and look fab.
I'm not sure. seem equal. not a fan of the seasoning buildup.

Ι want to get the Le Creuset but it's so expensive I'm afraid I might ruin it somehow. I make everything in a dutch oven. Like, literally, short of boiling pasta I make absolutely EVERYTHING in a dutch oven, it's just the best. I can't help but wonder if a less expensive one would be the wiser choice. I can afford it, I just don't like to waste.
Cabal, Le Creuset does have a lifetime warranty! They are made to last a lifetime. I have vintage pieces that have some wear but work like new. I hope this helps! Learn more - Le Creuset Dutch Ovens: evkitch.com/LeCreusetDutchOvens
