- This is my final animation production that I made as an undergrad at CSUF. This horror story was inspired by my own personal experience with OCD. All story stuff, art, animation, and editing was done by me :D
All the sound effects used can be found on Freesound.org. All songs were composed by the very talented Vivek Abhishek. You can check out their socials as well as all their songs listed in the order used in the links down below :)
Special thanks to Professor Jim Richardson for all the amazing feedback and helping me through figuring out how to bring this project to life!
Stay spooky!

As a former janitor, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have proper airflow when dealing with chemicals. Also, in addition, always put a little sticky note on any leftovers you end up making and either eat them ASAP or try to make smaller portions in the future to avoid food waste.
Hey @Eltrio that's what I Wanna be a Janitor did you get any tips and advice
@@americanbrownreviews Hm... It's been a couple years, but I might. Bear with me cause this is a long one.
1) Airflow is good. I know I'm repeating myself, but it's a damn good lesson. If the room you're cleaning has no airflow, prop a door open and bar anyone from entering for at least an hour.
2) Check the strength of the chemicals you use BEFORE you use them. I worked at a retail store where I could just grab a bottle of bleach, mark it as a business expense, and get to cleaning. I grabbed a small bottle, which I incorrectly assumed was regular strength. It was NOT. It was *concentrated* bleach. Thankfully, I was the only janitor there, so I wasn't fired.
2.5) When dealing with strong liquid chemicals (like bleach), dilute them in water. Most places will have a low sink in the backroom you can use without issue. However, the place you're working at likely already has a station of cleaning supplies. When I worked nights at a thrift store, there was a station where we filled bottles, grabbed some paper towels, and used the contents provided.
3) Don't be afraid to ask for additional supplies or cleaning materials. The place you're working at wants a clean bill of health and probably won't throw a fit over a $20 mop or a floor scrapper. If they DO throw a fit, then it's probably time to look for a new job.
4) Getting something cleaned quickly is not an excuse to half-ass it. It would be best to balance how clean you can make something with how fast you can get it done without sacrificing quality. Cause let's be honest, if YOU don't take pride in keeping vomit stains off the floor, no one will.
5) You're going to be paid less than everyone else; *deal with it.* This is a harsh one, but it has to be said. I've had two janitor jobs, and they paid barely a nickel above minimum wage, and the hours were pitiful. Hopefully, you'll have better luck with your employers, but I wouldn't go looking at expensive cars If I were you.
I really like how color is utilized is this film! The apartment is drawn in tones of green with an emphasis on dark shades, than we see a flash of the outside hallway and it’s full a vibrant lighter tones. Later when the officer opens the door we see the apartment is just as colorful, and the darker tones were (my interpretation) metaphor for the mental state of our protagonist. Wonderfully done!
I'm glad you caught that! I love using colors to aid in the storytelling!!
Kind of reminded me of Portrait of Dorian Gray
I saw this film a few months ago in class while applying to cal state northridge for animation. Needless to say, as someone who struggles with these feelings, this is one of the greatest connections i felt towards the experiences i went through. its a wonder how animation can bring such specific feelings and experiences to life. i cant wait to make animations next semester at csun.
This comment made me so happy! I'm so glad something I made based on my experiences was relatable for someone:'D I hope you have an awesome time at CSUN!! Hopefully one day I can see something you make!
Reminds me of the story of the person that mixed bleach & ammonia together because they thought it would make a stronger cleaning solution. Instead, they ended up accidentally killing themself, because when those two chemicals are mixed it produces Phosgene Gas (aka mustard gas), hydrochloric acid, hydrazine, and chlorine gas. The poor person ended up gasing themself to death not realizing that either bleach or ammonia by itself are perfectly good cleaners.
This is crazy... I actually mixed bleach with some cleaning powder and shampoo haha
I've mixed bleach and ammonia cleaners twice (because apparently I didn't learn the first time). You notice the effects real fast, so it's not hard to find the problem and wash it out or get to an area with better air flow. Not saying the story is fake and it can be dangerous, but it's not instantly hazardous unless you dump a bunch in an enclosed area and sit there tearing up and coughing.
Loved it! Looks like it could be part of the Don’t Starve game series world.
this is exactly what i thought too when i saw this!
I love the blank white eyes and the pencil sketch like artstyle! I love creepy things so much!
I concur. I've seen a style like this before. I don't remember what it was called, but it was about se_ual abuse.
Looks like a Gorillaz character
Then you may like the game "Don't Starve"...
@@Kluger_Hairisch I too think its highly inspired by Dont Starve becuase of artstyle and music
Reminds me of the dont starve video game
3:57 It’s so cool to hear tili tili bom as background music. Like, let’s face it, the original version is already creepy af, but the instrumental version serves as amazing foreboding
Are you brazilian?
Glad someone else knows this song
Wow... Near the very beginning, before reading the description or anything, I just said to myself "this is ocd isn't it" and lo and behold, that's what it is. Though I don't have the disorder myself, throughout my childhood I was a major 'germaphobe' and hypochondriac. I also have been diagnosed with ADHD, which can cause obsessions and intrusive thoughts. (And this is a bit personal) But from about the ages of about 9 to 13 I believed that the floaters in my eye were parasitic worms growing inside my head and that I was not going to make it very long. I didn't like thinking about my future I probably wouldn't have, but I decided not to tell anyone because they would remove my eyes. This caused near constant chronic anxiety about the creatures eating their way inside my eyes and head which I bore silently. Eventually I found out that I was not going to have my brain eaten when I stumbled across a video explaining what floaters are. All that to say, this film hits kind of close to home, and it's powerful in conveying what it's like to have these thoughts.
I'm sorry to hear that my friend.
I thought it's about getting chemical poisoned
So intriguing! I loved it even though I don't normally watch scary or creepy things, which shows you did a great job cause you were able to grab my attention with this short story :D
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it!! :D
@@RMSalners "Liked it" I live it!
Ah, yeah. A good hermophobic nightmare. I always love the way the Artists and animators recreate an experience of something like phobias, mental diseases, manias e.t.c. Like, there is always something unique and interesting in their in interpretations. Especially, when it's both, visuals and story.
Also, this artstyle, music and sound design resonates so much with Don't starve.
Probably one of the creepiest things I have ever seen
I searched ‘student film’ because I had the thought that you can take basically any single word and that word is probably the title of a student film and I needed a place to share that. 😂
The eyes kinda give don’t starve, and im loving it
The main theme is very similar to the music “Tili-tili-bom” (lullaby from the film “The Roadman” or Тили-тили бом - колыбельная из фильма "Путевой обходчик" from russian) - Aksinya Balakova cover
Its looks like don't starve style animation, i love it
I immediately thought of mustard gas with the bleach. Very creepy and disturbing.
Marvelous animation! It reminds me of « Don’t Starve », have you worked in it?
Same, the style and even the music really reminds me of it.
Don't Starve meets Junji Itō & I am LOVING IT.
Your artwork is great! I like the style and the smooth animation, and especially the details that always drive us to various theories production. Let me share one of mine.
She might have committed a suicide because she couldn't cope with OCD - she was feeling she couldn't clean everything up. As for the parallel flat - the place from where all the mess came - might be her fantasy at first, but her destination as a result. In the last scene we see a body image drawn with chalk - and she's seeing that too. A glimpse of a corpse mirroring in the image also leads to a hint - she must have been dead. But in purgatory, preparing for further actions. When she finally snaps out of the reality, we can see a calm wonder of hers - nothing to do with the panic about the hole, about the dirt as well. I'm not sure if the worms in the food were real or just her mind tricked her, but even if they were, that must have triggered her hard and drove to the suicide solution a bit quicker.
2:09 there's also "her body" in the the painting, with maybe flies.
3:13 and in the darkness, this has to be her body that has decayed.
What?
"When she finally snaps out of the reality, we can see a calm wonder of her - nothing to do with the panic about the hole, about the dirt aswell."
That sound so wrong.. hopefully you are alright...
To see it that way it's like this vid encourage suicide eh .. that's sad
I've seen a style like this before. I don't remember what it was called, but it was about se_ual abuse.
Don't starve vibe
Now that's what I'm talking about when I want to see psychologic horror
THIS IS SO FCKING GOOD!! The OCD theme was so well pictured and it was generally good in every aspect of production. Keep it up!!
I hid away an egg and I forgot about it.
Then about 2 weeks later, there was this horrible smell in the house. I had no idea what it was, and my mother was trying to figure out what it was too.
Eventually we found it, that same little egg was somehow full of maggots.
Amazing animation, well done! I like the way the story is presented bit by bit, and the subtle hints that point to the truth of what happened. I gawked near the end at the hallway like, "Nooo.... Nooooo! Poor babyyyy!" and had to rewatch to search for hints of my suspicions! I also love the way the scenes and transitions flow! This was so fun!
SPOILER:
Was the blackout at 1:22 because of the ammonia from maggot excretion and bleach fumes? BOOOOOOOOY
Yeah, i noticed her hand beginning to slow down
This is amazing! So delightfully creepy, the colours, the sounds it's all so *chef's kiss. Also reminds me a lot of the Magnus Archives and I am lovin' it.
YEAAAAH! This video could be absolutely an statement! Spoiler:
This is totally an manifestation of the Corruption.. Every detail, the mold, the insects.. Everything feels like part of The Crawling Rot!
It's kind of rare for me find horror media I like. All I can say is great job
where's the person with the three paragraph explanation for the meaning behind this short film.
right here budy she used bleach to clean the floor but she used to much of it and the fumes from the bleach slowly made her loose conscientness and kill her. the point of view at 1:10 when we see her from above you can see the edge of the screen turning black representing her having difficulty keeping her eyes open you can even see her movement slowling down too, then everything becomes black with only the moving magots, i think she went unconsious and fell into the magot filled food on the floor what we see are the magots crawling in front of her closed pupils and slowly eating her body. her room rotting away represent the state her body is rotting
Fr
Ahh the chlasic made poison gas while cleaning just like my aunt.
she doesn’t understand that with her actions she’s making everything worse and worse, she’s like a robot, she won’t stop until everything is clean, it’s scary.
This animation is really very different! I liked the style and idea.
I also noticed a very familiar motif in the soundtrack of this masterpiece. The soundtrack reminded me very much of a some russian song (I am russian yeah)... Interesting.
The tire was so clean you could see the flys reflection
the foreshadowing is great (painting for example)
its so disgusting and morbid towards the end, love how everything warps into fungi and mold
its great
Woah, this is something straight out of a Magnus Archive episode, I felt truly sick the whole time! Fantastic work!
It reminds me of DST animations! i love it!
It does!! that was the first thing I thought of, the blank eyes reminded me of Wendy and Willow
OH MY GRANDPA HOLY NURGLE IT'S AMAZING
Dark and scary, but amazing!!!
This is every janitors nightmare. This is more relatable to most people's real fears .
You can learn more about the making of "Fester" over at Animateducated, czcams.com/video/ytof-5aHKWs/video.html
I'm assuming the bleach killed Ivery
As someone who has a trash area made specificly for food waste disposal, and very often deal with maggots and rotten food, i cannot relate
The artstyle and imagery in this is amazing!
Mysteryforce?
I love this type of animation!! Great job!!
I'm always a big fan of these student projects. Keep up the great work dude, this is crazy cool!
Beautiful work 😁✨
Thanks so much!!
Reminds me of Don't starve
Brilliantly done!! Dark and deep....wonderfully animated!!😯👏👍❤
*TOP 💯%.*
*Very cool !!!! 😎*
...as a germaphobe this made me so uncomfortable and i love it
oh god the sound design is awefull and i love it
i love this artstyle so much
Absolutely love the style of this, pretty creepy though, still love it
this looks amazing! if i may suggest, Klei would probably really appreciate the artstyle and story quality!
Such a good work!
Man, that was really unique! Haven’t seen something like this before.
Congratulations 🎉 😊☕👍 for your work.
bro,,,amazing art style😳❤️
Holy crap, this is really good. This has single-handedly forced me out of art block.
An amazing short film! The artstyle reminds me of Don't Starve, and frankly, it suits the story well.
this reminds me of the artstyle of dont starve together, not completely but it has similarities. This is also really well done.
I like the way the animation looks. It reminds me of don't starve, great work.
I like it, reminds me of Don't Starve.
I love this animation ,but it feels so similar to what i experience myself. I don't know if I actually have OCD,but I def have such symptoms, and it is terrible.. like I need to live my everyday life with that hell in my head. I guess this is just the beginning of something more painful. I really hope that I am sick cuz I don't want to believe that it is how the normal human's life looks like.
Definitely should get that diagnosed if you can afford it especially since a lot of disorders tend to be package deals
I can’t remember if I got it diagnosed but I definitely have mild ocd but it’s mostly and inconvenience (repeated hand washing leading to chronicle dry hands) and it’s hard to distinguish some of the symptoms with ADD but ocd symptoms usually involve compulsively doing very specific repetitive tasks and feeling like you absolutely have too
Btw the death at the end is implied to be from using cleaning chemicals without good ventilation (also probably caused the hallucinations)
Reminder to NEVER. MIX. CHEMICALS. Ammonia and chlorine are a very bad combination (chloroform or chlorine gas ,I can’t remember)
Hearing Tili Tili Bom was a nice surprise.
Reminds me of the game Darkwood. this would be cool to see in games
Wow, this animation is really cool. I really liked this animation, watched it many times
Wow this is really cool!
Mashallah, amazing animation
great work
It is teaser "Dont Starv: new home"?
I had a nightmare similar to this when my husband and I discovered mold in our apartment. Luckily, we were able to move somewhere better, but that imagery still haunts me 😢
amazing work
WOW.
I love how dark it is, reminds me of Tim Burton 🙌🏾
Subscribing! This was amazing!
Insane animation nice
that was amazing
reminds Don't starve
So the person died from chemical inhalation?
OOH! Creepy!
Art style reminds me of Don't Starve
poor girl 💔this is how it feels when u hurting inside
u try to clean and fix something when other problem pub up with out clue u find yourself stuck and no body can see what u going through
New page Don't starve together looks great)
Very cool
Incrível
Its always bug related things that trigger my trypophobia i swear
Anyway wesome animation !
LOVE IT
I fucking love this artstyle
GOOSE BUMPS
I feel this horrible aching with ocd, trying to be in control of what you can because so much else is out.
what happened?
4:23 smile face 🙂
