My son sent “Upwards and over the Mountain” to me when he was 18 and went to study abroad. He died 6 years later from OxyContin. It brought tears to my eyes then and as I read it now, it was almost like a premonition. “Mother forget me”. God I miss him so much. And the line “Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body?” It always rips my heart out. Thank you, Andrew. Will you ever know how very much you are missed?
I'm so sorry to hear about that. My grandma has lost her two girls (my mom and my aunt) over the past decade, I'm sure she feels similarly. Sending my prayers and love ❤️
incredible music, theres something special about it. this really takes me back to a better chapter of my life when i was living a care free mountain life and before i was diagnosed with cancer. listening to it meow makes me feel nostalgic . wanting to recreate being 35 again.
Listened to this album on repeat when I was a bit younger. Had to give it a break, because, you know how music can make you feel sometimes. Now I'm at a stage in my life where I can listen again, and wow. Promising Life reminds me of my first relationship and I used to feel pain about that, and now I feel ... well, not pain. Thank you Sam.
I had to stop as well, because it reminded me of someone I loved deeply, and they betrayed me. Just started listening again, and that pain is finally gone. Nice to have this record back.

My biggest problem with this album is that I can't get past "Upward Over the Mountain" without clicking to hear that song again and again. His best imo.
I had the same problem, eventually the greatness of faded from the winter hits and you want more. Then other tracks take hold, bird stealing bread & weary memory. One day you will praise the entire record as I'm sure most of us do.
I just recently found Iron & Wine and it touches me to my ver core! Especially Upward Over the Mountain! My nephew died in a car accident two months ago, and that song reminds me so much of him! 😢
My parents did the same thing for me! They played this album all the time when I was a baby. I am almost 18 now, and It’s still my favorite thing to listen to when I am feeling stressed or upset, it calms me right down. Such a good album!
I love the fact that Sam Beam did experiment with his latest works, but there is something so essential to this sound that got everyone hooked. Its hard for us performers to change once get known for a certain style of music. All in all though these early albums still contain a sense of magic and charm not to be found in the latter works.
I was a teenager when this came out, and it was such a blessing. I'd rather cut my balls of than listen to his recent stuff, but this album and Sea and the Rhythm still hit hard.
mother don't worry i killed the last snake in the creek bed mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to mother forgive me i sold your car for the shoes that i gave you I was just listening to random songs and then this one got my attention , and the mentioned lyrics are the ones that got my attention , and then holy shit i found out its how he named the album

Graciously, Iron and Wine was my last great musical discovery in 2015...it joined IAMX, Brandi Carlile, MGMT, Bright Eyes, Sigur Ros, and my ultimate number one, spontaneously and easily confirmed over and over until solidly undeniable, Modest Mouse. In wondering what is it that all of these bands have in common, causing my feelings for them...I don't know...I'll have to think further. ...well, there IS something...because of the quality of their work, it would NOT be easy, or maybe even possible, to pick a favorite song by these bands...or even a top 3...or 5. To do so would cause unease, a feeling of, "wait, but this song, and this one... ...and THIS ONE!!" And even choosing a favorite album would be tough too. But I can zero in on a favorite song of all time...and funnily enough, it's a song that I at first very much underappreciated, not recognizing it for what it was. It's: Life Like Weeds by Modest Mouse.

Your son has brilliant taste in music, much love to you and your family 🙏
layerinfinity thank you. Many of his friends mentioned this after his death. 💗💗
michael jones. Thank you. The pain never ends. It will be with me until my dying breath.
Cried reading this. Sending you love from a mother to another mother ❤️

Sometimes, heroes don't wear capes.
Thanks for giving us a way to click to specific tracks.
I truly believe this is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. The pinnacle of the indie folk genre.
this album is enough to make a grown man cry rivers (me im that grown man)
Every song is unique, and the whole thing gets better with each play. What a talent this man is.
7:09 Faded from the Winter grabs me right in the feels every single time. It's a physiological response that teleports me to specific time and place.
Years later... Never gets old...
Yeah...
My biggest problem with this album is that I can't get past "Upward Over the Mountain" without clicking to hear that song again and again. His best imo.
i agree!

I love the entire album, but Upward definitely rises to the top for me. At least for now . . .
Luisa Lugi - fgggu
Muddy Hymnal is an unsung great track from this album. It's a well crafted song.
Upward Over the Mountain is just... wow. This whole album is incredible.
you're right :)
I just recently found Iron & Wine and it touches me to my ver core! Especially Upward Over the Mountain! My nephew died in a car accident two months ago, and that song reminds me so much of him! 😢
I couldn't agree more
The mood created by this album is amazing. It transports me away. What a beautiful masterpiece.
this is so fuckin beautiful. this whole fuckin album. just so fucking beautiful. makes you feel so fuckin good
Here here!
It happens so rarely to me to fully, powerlessly melt while listening to an album. This has been a case.
Oh man, Faded from the Winter just kills me. As a man with a daughter, "daddy's Ghost". Sam Beam just ruins me after a few cups.
so may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten, songs are like birds flying upwards over the mountain.
sons* Kind of crucial, hah
Calms my baby and it’s her fav. Nap/bed time jams since prob 2 months old.
#parentingdoneright

My favourite album. Thanks for uploading
My son, at the time of this release, asked me why the singer sounded so tired.
that my son is quite a question
pull up a chair and let me tell you about depression
I might be super tired, but I read this so different, like I'm being addressed as the son.
Before I really got into indie folk like this I wondered the same. But now that I love it, I realize his voice and tone is exactly how I feel.
The legend goes that on this first record he had to sing very quietly so as not to wake the children
love is a scene i render when you catch me wide awake

Concordo perfeitamente
People love the sense of nostalgia in his older songs that cannot be found in his recent jazzy style.
Iron & Wone is what was missing in my life. :) Thanks for uploading this.
Fun fact. These are all home demos
Thank you for posting this!
yes
Such a pleasant surprise to come home to
Jesus...my heart now.
Neverending winter but a warm blanket makes it all right
His music is so much better lo-fi. Incredible album.
i got tickets to see him in the uk in about 2009 and he brought a band with him, we got nothing off the first 2 lp's
I wasn't impressed at all
finger picking arpeggios shredding wheat
Promising light is so underrated.
I don't know how to get that sound with the vocals but I wish I did I love that vintage compressed sound
final fifty seconds of faded from winter have finally found my formerly fickle and now fortunate and formidable life
Your voice brings me peace . Thank you for your beautiful music :)
Faded from the Winter brings me to my knees
Me too, my fav!!

Beautiful.
The Rooster moans sounds like a song from the deliverance soundtrack :D Squeal like a piggie !!
This is folk music
Came across Iron & Wine thanks to a track on Longmire. Recently went and listened to a lot more - just wonderful, wonderful songwriting.
Every song on this album brings me back to my mid/late 20s in Austin (im 43 now). Carefree times chillin with my girlfriend Anna.
Wow what an underrated band! Now I dig their music.
'Weary Memory' is one of my favorite songs of any Artist. Well done, Sam. And, thank you.
2 Kings, Jezebel, Wikipedia, Iron and Wine cite , The Creek Drank the Cradle. What a wonderful reward this music is! Great.
Beautiful melancholy
y u so gud to me subpop?
I was a teenager when this came out, and it was such a blessing. I'd rather cut my balls of than listen to his recent stuff, but this album and Sea and the Rhythm still hit hard.
Ethan Kemper His latest album had a similar sound to this
Weed Garden is pretty good imo
This album sounds like Simon & Garfunkel. Love it.
Holy shit Bird Stealing Bread at double the speed is wonderful. It almost completely changes the tone of the song
That's actually really cool. It's got like a rockabilly type of feel.
I love this album. Love it.
💛Another beautiful album🌻

Fuck me that is wonderful. The production sounds like JJ Cale’s records. Man.

Sam at his best
the rooster moans reminds me of cowboy bebop for some reason...
This sound reminds me of Nick Drake.
Does anyonne have any clue on the cover artist? That drawing is outstanding

Mother, don't worry
I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother, don't worry
I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother, remember being so stern with that girl who was with me?
Mother, remember the blink of an eye when I breathe through your body?
So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying upwards over the mountain
Mother, I made it up from the bruise of a floor of this prison
Mother, I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother, forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother, forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you
So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons could be birds, taken and broken up to the mountain
Mother, don't worry
I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother, don't worry
She's got a garden we're planting together
Mother, remember the night that the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor and the fleas on their paws
And you cried 'til the morning
So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain
This song isn't on Spotify anymore and I like to sing to it but I'm bad at remembering lyrics so this ought to help me when I come here 🥲
