Agreed. My friend the late guitarist Danny Barker played a two-week engagement with James P. at the Stuyvesant Casino in New Jersey. He said when James P. played, ". . . It looked like he had fifty fingers. When he stopped and folded his arms, the piano was still ringing with the sound!"

This is an awesome recording! To hear James P playing with all these other instruments is a real treasure. He really lets himself go here and plays some amazing runs. He doesn't usually play with this much finesse in his improvisation. Great recording!!!

If only he recorded more in settings like these! Check out his run at 2:05 - 2:11 !! One can only imagine what he truly was capable of at the height of his incredible technique!

He wasn't the undisputed king of cutting contests for nothing.

According to several people, James P Johnson was the best jazz pianist in NY until Art Tatum came to town. Supposedly Johnson “never forgave” Joe Turner for bringing Tatum to New York, although I’m not sure how true that is... but maybe that’s (one reason) why Joe Turner moved to France?

Wonderful recording of JPJ, the run at the very end is reminiscent of Tatum!

There is a purported eyewitness account of a cutting contest session between JPJ, Waller and Tatum circulating on the internet. I admit I'm too lazy to google it but anyway, Johnson put up a fight until the very end and although Tatum eventually won, JPJ really earned his respect and appreciation on that day.

Both JPJ and Art Tatum had absolute pitch and could reportedly play back something after hearing it once. Supposedly Arthur Schutt also had this ability. If any of those men were in the room I would not play and would pretend I was someone else!
