  • Hello everyone! Today we're going to be reacting to Gavin Harrison playing Anesthetize! I must say, this was a very fun video to watch as I had no idea what a gifted drummer Gavin Harrison is! This video isn't going to be the entire song, rather what seems to be a shorter excerpt from what looks to be a drum clinic. Gavin Harrison is best known for playing with the progressive rock bands Porcupine Tree and King Crimson.
    For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short CZcams video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!
    NOTE:
    This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!
    Thank you so much for stopping by and watching this video, I hope that you enjoy it!

    A good drummer knows when to shine and when to hold back, and I guess that's the reason why I find listening to Gavin the most. He is, by far, my favourite because I am more of a melody and overall cohesion preferring person rather the too technical stuff.
    P.S.: I'm not saying that he's not technical, just that I like his playing style as he seems to understand what's going on and doesn't persist on making himself being noticed every moment. He is a musician who understands the composition and knows how to act accordingly.

He said himself that (I simplified this) instead of playing big flash fills (as most drummer might think), try to think, play like a musician, an arranger, an architect. Balancing your playing with the band, understanding the dynamics of the song, put in the right, tasteful fills in the right spot of the music. Like you said, he is a good, no, a goddman professional drummer.

      @WhoDarestheMAN gamer WOW. What an ignorant hater. Anyway, your're compairing two completely different worlds. I'll dumb it down for you so your little brain can understand easier. I play guitar as well as drums. It's the same as comparing John Petrucci to Jimi Hendrix. Is john Petrucci faster and more technical? Yes. Does he have more technique? Yes. In fact, my playing style is more like his than Hendrix, but Hendrix is a pioneer and known as the greatest of all times by, well, just about everybody. (all opinions of course). In fact, once again, John Petrucci is influenced by him. Thomas Lang, as I said before is a stellar drummer. There's no question of that. Neil Peart was, is and always will be revered as the greatest. Not just by me, but by well, just about everyone again. Most likely including Thomas Lang. And, just remember, the ability to play fast does NOT make you a great drummer. And Lang does tend to overplay. Anyway, that is only my opinion. To each him own I guess. I just don't subscribe to the Lang fanclub. If you don't like it, move on. I don't have time for ignorance so I will not respond any more. Leason learned.....Don't express yourself in a comment, because there's always an ignorant F@#$ that ruins the conversation.

    Josh it’s nice to see that you know what your talking about but, and this is not a slam. Gavin Harrison is one of the most unique and accomplished drummers out there and to say that “he plays like you” is in my book disrespectful! I know that I may have taken that out of context, but it just didn’t sound right. Please delve more into Gavin’s catalog of music, and or into one of his books that he’s written, this guy in many of people’s view is a drummers - drummer. You should post something that you’ve recorded so that we all can take a gander . . . Peace ✌🏼

    • @JoshCastillo
      @JoshCastillo  Před 3 lety +2

      I respect that we all have our opinions, and this is not a slam. In my opinion, I find it disrespectful for someone to demand "proof," from a complete stranger on the internet whom owes you nothing. I find it especially disrespectful to do so when that stranger has in no way offended or insulted you or the subject matter that you feel the need to defend. As a matter of fact, I don't believe that I said even one negative thing about Gavin, only praise for the his excellent drumming.
      I also find it disrespectful for you to assume that I in any way shape or form, ever insinuated that I was in any way better than Gavin. Gavin is a career musician who drums and improves his craft every single day. Of course I'm not, and will not ever be as good or better than him and to imply that I ever insinuated that is just silly.
      But like I said, I respect your opinion on the matter and if my content and opinions offend you, then I apologize. I believe that the simple and possibly best solution would be to perhaps block my channel or something (I don't know I've never done something like that) so that it doesn't happen again. Peace

Secondly I never stated that you said that you were better than Gavin, and or insulted his genius. I found at 13:05 of the video you stated “he plays like I do”. You saying that, sparked my curiosity of your playing, that’s it.So again it was not a slam, in my opinion someone the caliber of Gavin Harrison, I would never try and say something like that, and like I stated I probably took it out of context. "a is "like" GOD - he IS GOD!!" - "why did you take this live version??" and so and so repetitive and b) because the guy commenting not even tries a deeper understanding of the technique and musicality (in this case), but mainly puts out stuff to have another video. so, although I don't disagree with you on this point, it's actually spot on, but when you explain it the way you did, to a novice, or aspiring drummer to be, it sounds intimidating as crap, and I worry that failing to include some kind of disclaimer about muscle memory, and the mental and physical disconnect that comes with practice and repetician. I'd "of course I've gotta what I'd have said, right?" anyway, I'd keep in mind in the future to include something like, yeah it sure sounds like an impossible thing to do, but in time, with practice, you'll do these sort of nuanced things in autopilot, without even thinking about what you're doing, you're just doing it. You don't have to constantly be counting, or thinking about how many mm you're raising your hat foot, etc. This is solely an opinion of mine, not meant to have any negative conotation in it, it's just an observation, and tip about not intimidating the kids out of the game unintentionally. I obviously "hopefully" am not even implying that you'd be intentionally veering the new kids away, definitely don't take it that way. Jesus lol, all the disclaimers about intent in 2021 can be exhausting lmao. Oh, and a side note. I've been playing for 35ish years, have off and on taught the entire time, sessiojn work, tours, some big some small, and generally goofed off with the drums. I don't know your credintials, but I can say with the utmost certainty that since we have never heard of one another, Gavin has forgotten more about precision and nuance in the drums, than you and I will ever know, if we combined our experience lol. We'd still be way short. Dude is unreal. Look at some more. This performace actually, watch the entire thing. The last Porcupine song I think, it's been so long, and I can't even remember the song title, but you'll know it. It's toward the end. Yeah, that. I know drummers will often set the hi-hat full up position to make that nice sizzle sound, so all it takes to achieve is a full lift of the foot off the footboard. Gavin has to stay on his pedal the whole time to keep the right gap.

    Gavin was created at the center of a supermassive black hole that compressed all drum talent into a singularity, and he is composed of pure Hawking's radiation, which we oddly perceive as a human. The only way he could be more astonishing is if he was a blind, deaf quadriplegic.

    Great reaction! Gavin is one of the best rock drummers to ever do it.
    I highly recommend you check out Jimmy Chamberlin. He has a similar rock/jazz style, but with more emphasis on the jazz/swing side of things. Not nearly as precise as Gavin, but more emotive. Check out the song "Streetcrawler" by Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.

    if you wanna see Gavin having fun and being creative watch Porcupine Tree - Hatesong live at the Park West in 2005. It's simply jaw-dropping, really, I've never seen anything like that in my life.

      @JoshCastillo  Před rokem

      Just because I didn’t listen to your chosen music and instead focused on jazz greats like Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Buddy Rich, that makes me a farce? No one in the world has ever heard every deserving artist. It’s literally impossible. I often wonder about some of y’all’s logic.

    • @wallisliss

      Gotcha. Shame. Time to branch out brother. So many drummer greats you are missing out on. I'm 67, and my dad was a pro jazz player. I play percussion but I was a a live sound engineer and recording studio engineer so I'm far from ignorant. The gentleman you were reviewing in that video is considered in the top 5 trap players in the world. Vinnie is as well. Branch out. Namaste.
