  • Shannon Palmatier is the mother of two boys with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), a rare hereditary disease in which children are unable to properly remove bile acids from their liver.
The disease is an autosomal recessive disorder and is linked to mutations from several genes, including ATP8B1, ABCB11 and ABCB4.
Symptoms, and their severity, vary greatly among this population but the more common symptoms are severe itching and jaundice.
Treatment options will also vary but may include ursodiol, biliary diversion, or a liver transplant.
