Hurt her back from the bed jumping scenes. They actually performed that Angiogram on her (no special effects.) What people sometimes don't realize is that Reagan was the one who snuck into the church and desecrated the Mary statue. And while the detector was talking with the mom. She snuck downstairs and took the crucifix and ran back into the room before she started stabbing herself with it. But what makes it so scary is we never see her do all these things. It is all off camera.

      I don't know about the Mary statue. In the book it's very clear that black masses were being celebrated around town when Reagan got possessed. The movie hints it when the inspector is taking to Father Karras in the race tracks, but the books goes more into details about it. It describes things happenning around that are even more disturbing than the Mary statue part.

    I watched this movie once when it was first released. I saw it with a Catholic friend who explained the Catholic specific aspects, such as the importance of the St Christopher medal (patron saint of travelers). The significant point is that the little girl had never been the demon's main target. The demon had been targeting Father Karras all along. But in the end, Karras acknowledged (by the squeezing of the hand) the Last Rites being spoken of him, and thus his soul was still saved.

    • @DuchessofSassytown
      @DuchessofSassytown Pƙed 2 lety +46

      Another aspect that I think goes over the heads of people without as much Catholic context is the question about Regan's middle name. Notably, her mother only gave her one, and, combined with our brief glimpse into her personality, I think this is meant to add to the idea that she is an easy target for possession. In the past, many people would receive multiple middle names to prevent the demons from being able to successfully learn their true name and have power over them.

    • @davida7153
      @davida7153 Pƙed 2 lety +25

      The main target was Merrin because he fought Pazuzu (the demon) in the past, in a previous exorcism, and Merrin won because he was incorruptible, unable to break. The demon was seeking revenge. Karras was already broken because the lost of his faith and his mother. He never believed fully in the posession until the moment it begun, when he watches the things that Pazuzu can do, wich causes to him a shock and fall even more into his deep depression. Karras was a tool to break Merrin but he failed and then he kills Merrin by provocking him a heart attack because, again, Merrin was wining. In the book Karras says it clearly when it happens: "You son of the bitch killed him because he was winning over you again".

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 Pƙed 2 lety +13

      @@davida7153 That is disputable. If all the demon wanted was to kill Merrin, it could have done that at any time. Killing a man is easy; the demon would have wanted to send a new soul to hell, which it could not do with Merrin. But we were shown that the demon had been working on Karras' faith for a long time, and Karras was near the point of losing his faith.

    • @JoLeeRey
      @JoLeeRey Pƙed 2 lety +8

      This is one of the best explanations from the perspective of the demon's motivation. It's clear 100% that was the devil's plan to strike Father Karras down and take his soul to hell. What the devil wasn't counting on was the love that Father Karras had for Reagan's soul and that despite him being tortured and traumatized by him taking the sweet innocent girl and having her speak as his mother, he chose to sacrifice his life so that she could go to heaven. It's really a beautiful story.

    Hmmm, as terrible as the events are in this book and film, I have always viewed it as more of a love story. A devoted mothers love for her daughter, doing whatever she could for her. Father Karass's love for his mother and being unable to help her. Finding his faith in God again and ultimately giving his life for a child he didn't even know. Reagan kissing the priest at the end of things. Of course there is the whole demon thing, but, the strong theme of love running through the story from beginning to end , at least for me, seems to be more of the central point.

They came out with a single-length version, which got up to number seven on the Billboard pop charts. The movie helped sales of the album, and it boosted Mike Oldfield's career. He continued to make album-length pieces after that. One of the best is Ommadawn. Oldfield also wrote the song Family Man, which was a hit for Hall and Oates.

      Which, in truth, is a fair and smart choice - again when done well - because of how improvements in tech continuously make older CGI more and more noticeable by standing out to folks used to the modern standard
. making the rest of the real parts of a film blend creates better continuity when watching it at the time and later as it’s viewed in full package.

    Lankester Merrin a veteran Catholic priest is on an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hatra in Iraq. Alerted by a colleague, he finds a sculpture that resembles Pazuzu, a demon of ancient origins with whose history Merrin is familiar. Soon afterwards, after taking heart medication, Merrin encounters a statue towering over him in the image of Pazuzu, an omen warning him of a looming confrontation.
    Two dogs begin fighting and snarling at each other in the dust. [This struggle foreshadows the eventual conflict between good (the priest) and evil (the possessed girl), and also hints at the theme of "evil against evil".

It turns up throughout the film very obviously. The passing back and forth at the end especially. Also the Pazuzu partial figurine was found at the bottom of the stairs by the Det. after Burke's (?) death. It's the reverse of the St. Christopher medal obviously good v evil (religion v devil). How did it get there? Burke had it planted on him? Such a good classic. Great reaction as always!

It was used to place the idea in the Detective’s and Audience’s mind that Reagan has something to do with Burke’s death. Although we don’t SEE Regan desecrate the church, we assume she did that as well...again leaving her artwork as a “calling card”. Several films now considered classics were initially rated X when they first came out: Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris. Producers for The Exorcist were worried that the film would receive an X-rating and that they would have to make cuts. However, the MPAA rated the film R without any cuts required.

They later said that the studio went to some extreme lengths to get the movie changed from an X rating to the R rating that they wanted. This movie especially was very controversial and taboo. There was also a lot of controversy over what they had Linda Blair do in that movie at 12 years old, such a young age. If people didn’t tell you already I can reassure that some of the more adult stuff was done by an adult double. They certainly didn’t subject the 14 year old to more than she had probably heard in the school yard. The adult actors had a harder time. The one thing was Linda did have to be freezing cold on set. She also had to endure the backlash of being the “exorcist girl”

    Fun facts: Along with Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller/Father Karras and Lee J. Cobb/Lt. Kinderman, they were well-known and respected actors as well. Cobb would've been in The Exorcist III if he hadn't passed away. The movie I remember Cobb most for is the 1960s James Bond spoof movies Our Man FLint & In Like Flint-movie reaction suggestions. Jason Miller is the father of actor Jason Patric.

    So glad you watched this, every film fan should watch this. I would recommend a second viewing as there are bits that will be missed and especially focus on the opening Northern Iraq scene. There is so much significance in this 15 minutes and it kinda sets up and foreshadows what is going to happen. The ending of that opening part where Father Marin is facing towards the demon statue is like a here comes Good vs Evil battle. The dogs start fighting with those deep growls and did you noticed before he turned and faced the statue there was a strong gust of wind out of nowhere (representing the presence of evil) and the shadow behind him moved, almost as if the statue itself was moving into position and ready to begin battle.
    Classic lines from you as always "..just ball her up and put her in the washing machine..."

    This was based off of a true story. It was a 14 year old boy that was possessed. It was a month long exorcism. They brought him to St Louis at Alexian Brothers hospital that it took place. The real movie about it is called possessed. As far as the movie, a lot of those actors reactions were real. The people who made the film flung them around and the pain was real. Linda Blairs back got broke. They made the room 30 degrees below freezing. A lot happened making the movie. There were several deaths. In the hospital it happened, they had to shut the 2nd floor down because supernatural activity kept happening. Eventually they built another building
