Laura Segura's song "Mentirosa's Is Not My Name" is a direct response to "Mentirosa" by Mellow Man Ace on Capitol Records. She felt his song put a negative spin on Latina's, saying they were cheat's, and couldn't tell the truth. As a Latina she was compelled to address this stereotype for all women. In the rap /hip hop scene of the early nineties their were not many Latina rappers.
We first met Laura performing at a Lowrider car show concert in San Jose, California. She went on to graduate from San Jose State University and later befriended the political rap group Aztlan Nation from Berkeley. Segura is no longer in the music business, but is now working in public service helping others. Unfortunately Laura lost her battle with breast cancer in 2022.
She's a pioneer of Spanglish rap, and in the company of the newer artist's of today like Snow tha Product, AnaTijoux, Ivy Queen, Angie Martinez, Hurricane G, Gabylonia, Trina, Rebeca Lane, Mala Rodriguez, Lisa M, Nina Dioz, Teardrop of A Lighter Shade of Brown, Cypher Femenino Rap Talca, Mestiza, Geslybeth, SativanderGround, Real rima okulta, Alerta, Latina Sativa MC, Zulay Rudyal, Blanca La Chingona, and 16 year old Becky G. from Inglewood
