  • The golden eagle - Aquila chrysaetos chrysaetos. The most widely distributed species of eagle, they're found throughout the northern hemisphere. Their average wingspan is 1.8 - 2.3m and they can reach speeds of 150 miles per hour when diving for prey. Hares, marmots, squirrels and arctic foxes are the golden eagle's prey of choice. In Europe, they're commonly found in mountainous regions of northern Scotland, Scandinavia, Italy, Austria and France.
