  • This video shows step by step how to disassemble an old HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and get strong neodymium magnets from it. Warning: Neodymium magnets can crush your body parts! A broken neodymium magnet can be very sharp! The magnet removal destroys the HDD!

    Other sources of neodymium magnets are ear-buds, earphones and the tiny speakers from laptops, computer monitors and flat screen led TV speakers. Older ones are bigger, and often with ceramic magnets, but smaller modern speakers contain Neodymium magnet cores often stuck to disks of steel to make them into a longer cylinder to improve the bass throw distance of smaller speaker cones in inexpensive appliances. Motors of remote controlled toys may also depend on minute cylinder shaped magnetic rotors, or stators in ultra light configurations such as drones or micro RC cars, and of course vibrators and loudspeakers in mobile phones, and smart watches. Even device chargers and gift boxes may utilize Neodymium magnets to bring surfaces together securely.

    That screwdriver type is TORX and HDDs use different size of them: From tiny laptops to larger and older drives; T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T9 and T10. It’s good idea to buy a set of torx as they are going to be more and more common. I always store the screws as Torx is the best screw head type. And the screws used in the hard drive itself are of very good quality.

    The screw "shape" is Torx.
    To remove those magnets, just soak them in acetone, the epoxy glue will melt and the coating on the magnets won't tear up...

    The other problem with tearing the plating is that the exposed magnet material can then corrode (that's why they're plated in the first place). Between that and the risk of breakage, I prefer to keep them on the bracket if it isn't important to my usage to remove them.

    • @jeffreyMagnum460
      @jeffreyMagnum460 Před rokem

      Yup keep them on the backing plate it will keep them from breaking.

    • @bluerilius4362
      @bluerilius4362 Před rokem

      I put superglue as a sort of protective layer on the exposed magnet surface when that happens

    These magnets may look bigger but in my case there were 4 or 5 tiny magnets encased in the larger piece you see. I only saw this when I twisted the magnet and you could see the tiny magnets inside.

  • @sofknsad
    @sofknsad Před 6 lety +4

    They are fragile and break easily so be carefull when removing them. Also do not use heat gun because they loose their magnetism permanently if heated.

    • @rogeriohernandez2957
      @rogeriohernandez2957 Před 5 lety +4

      you can safely heat if you dont surpass the Curie temperature withc is the temperature magnets loose their properties that temperature varies depending on the magnet type/grade etc

      I have only had one break and I have removed many of these. And I do not do it neatly like this video... I just take a hammer to the other side of the IDE drive and smash it the pry it open 😂

    They are handy :-D
    A frend was having trouble with a magnetic badge on his uniform, it was weak and came off too easy, i replaced the old magnet with the neodymium one, also the inside plate was replaced by the thick plate off the hdd heads.
    Never fell off again LOL :-D :-D

      haha I just opened one and it was stuck in the middle (I bent the metal plate, it was a dead drive anyways) and I was trying to force it open, when I realized there was a screw there. The best part is that, under the sticker, I couldn't unscrew it. The head was inside the plate. Luckily, I managed to open it with pliers

    The locking gas door (not cap) failed on my outback. The cable tip broke. Dealer wanted $1,000 to replace it (cable goes from driver floor, through passenger compartment, through fender wall...but still $1,000. I tried different magnets until my friend David gave me one from a hard drive. Voila...gas door stays shut...I placed the magnet behind the door. You can't tell there's anything wrong.
