I agree. I've watched everything I could find recorded and every video. I listen to his music nearly everyday. From his Wrecking Crew days to his last video. Wish I could have seen him live.
Love this proud to say I was his bass player for 8 years and he was one of the best people I ever knew in my life.Great little documentary thank you.
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it. Jerry was a great guy!
Well sir, I am envy you and glad to see you comment. Had to be such a great ride.
I met Jerry in 1982 and was able to play two songs with him at our house when he came by to get my dad to sign some papers but my dad was at our fishing camp. I was at home alone practicing drums. There were no guitars there at the time so he played my Yamaha keyboard through my band`s Peavey PA system and sang two songs through the one microphone we had. He was one of the first people who encouraged me to keep going on drums and seemed sincere about it when he told me he could tell I had talent. I had only started playing months before and almost immediately found myself in a band so I was nervous. I could tell he was a great person. Jerry was right. I`ve played music since and learned guitar too. That treasured keyboard burned in a house fire near our fish camp and my drums were lost to a bar fire after a show in Mansfield, Louisiana in 1993.
@@ryansilver5497 Billy has the advantage of being taught by CZcams and internet, back then was a whole different evolution, Jerry was Chet style Billy isn't, and a counterpoint master
@@shable1436 thank you for sharing your thoughts but I respectfully disagree. Music is music . Billy Strings grew up on bluegrass from his uncle , not CZcams. He was shredding bluegrass acoustic in his youth regardless of CZcams in my opinion… but the good news is , I believe Jerry Reed was BETTER … Chet Atkins , better .. and Doc Watson, better . Strings is a speed demon and fantastic but these other players were every bit as good if not better . I’m not convinced it’s like professional tennis where the players do indeed get significantly better over the years based on training and equipment improvements. I think , unlike professional tennis , the old timers were PHENOMENAL as they stood in that era compared to today’s players … even the country guys from the 40’s and 50’s and Elvis’s guitar player and all those guys, the guy from Hee Haw (forget his name ). He’s ABSOLUTELY as fast as Billy Strings .. without CZcams … Roy Clark ? Tommy Emanuel was a beast before CZcams and he’s better than Billy Strings. So again , I don’t think CZcams affects the skill levels at the higher brackets at all . Those older generation guys could stand up to today’s players with zero issues.
Being from Austin, I was working, making heart valves, and listening to KVET and they played a Jerry Reed song... then another and I started to tear up a little. Two back-to-back Jerry Reed songs, and I knew he had passed. Then the DJ confirmed the sad news. I picked up the radio and wrote on the bottom of it "This is the damn radio that told me Jerry Reed passed away". I still have the radio.
Thanks for reading.
I had the great honor of picking with Jerry in 1973 at the Sheraton hotel in Raleigh North Carolina with my duo partner Gary Davis , Jerry picked four hours straight with us we’ve got great pictures and cassette tap of that night. It was the high light of my life. Nothing will ever top the experience of that night.
Wow, would love to have a copy of that tape. Incredible story.
I think the one word you were looking for to describe him would be: ENTERTAINER!
Jerry was a monster guitar player. One of the most innovative guitarist of our time
Dolly Parton had a similar but slightly different experience with Elvis and Colonel Tom. E wanted to record "I Will Always Love You", and Dolly was thrilled - but when she found out about having to give up half of the publishing, she said "thanks anyway". And Dolly is quick to point out that she is very glad she made this decision, especially after Whitney Houston made it a monumental hit - and Dolly made a ton as songwriter.
That song was number one twice. Once for Dolly and once for Whitney!
I was wondering if anybody would mention this. Dolly Parton has long told the story of Elvis really wanting to do "I Will Always Love You" but upon hearing Tom Parker's demand of co- song writing credits she turned them down, and I've always felt that was gutsy. I'm glad to see that a great guy like Jerry Reed had the stones to do the same thing. Tom Parker was a real piece of work.
Just mentioned it. Didn't see your comment.
@@jamasters62Yep, he made Elvis a lot of money. Elvis could have fired Parker, but kept him as his manager. Elvis was a man and lived with his decisions.
Back in the time when Elvis was going to cut I will always love you it was an early seventies the time when he divorced Priscilla Elvis Presley would have made that song a hell of a bigger hit at that time because he was singing because he was singing it from his emotions of Priscilla Presley Dolly Parton already had a hit with the song with her own version so that's one of the reasons why one of the reasons why she didn't agree to Colonel Parker's demand Colonel Parker was a rude person when he came off on a business part of the deal I was didn't even know about that either Elvis was going to fire Colonel Parker when he found out about that cuz he really wanted to record that song. I never heard this story about Jerry Reed I thought Dolly Parton was the only one but everyone that Elvis Presley recorded for he got half the publishing rights and I was because of Colonel Parker he was a thief, not only Colonel Parker got 50% of Elvis's earnings he got 50% of all the profits that he would sing for publishing rights of someone else's song so think about it I was only got 25% of recordings, that's pretty shabby and this is why when I was died Priscilla Presley check Colonel Parker to court when I was dying because he was trying to get 73% of the royalties after Elvis died which is another bulshit crack. And Colonel Parker lost in other words Colonel Parker died broke. If Elvis Presley was alive then Elvis Presley with a one back all that 50% that Colonel Parker can't scammed Elvis out of because Elvis didn't know what he was doing he was new at all this Colonel Parker was a con artist this is why he was kicked out of the United States let me rephrase I'm not sure if that's why I was kicked out of the United States he was kicked out of the United States because of something to do with the military I supposedly killed somebody in the military and he wasn't allowed back in the United States I'm not sure if something around that line, Colonel Parker was nothing but a rip-off artist he stole from Elvis throughout the years cuz he was controlling a lot of the money and Alice's father was involved in it somehow too but you'll never admit it, Elvis didn't trust too many people so he had the right people in line that he did trust which he thought he could trust his own father and Colonel Parker and Colonel Parker. Gladys Presley new Colonel Parker was no good he should have listened to his mother
The man was a legend! He was a mega star! Every song he wrote, every guitar he played, every movie he made was amazing! Perhaps his standing up to Elvis was what prevented him from being known the world over, because he was that talented!!! He was literally sought out by the 'King' to record guitar man! THAT SAYS IT ALL!! He was ever faithful to his wife and babies and is someone to look up to. Rest in Peace GUITAR MAN THE GREAT JERRY REED!!!!!!!!!!!
He stood up to the colonel, not Elvis. Elvis was just happy to have his work on his singing.
Jerry Reed didn't just co-star in Bat 21, he exec produced that film. Reed was a true talent and a gentleman.
How can you not love and respect a guy like Jerry Reed??
Dolly Parton didn't sell out to the dog catcher either.
I love Jerry's rendition of the song, "City of New Orleans". He was an amazing composer and this song tugs at your heart strings
I think you are 100% correct. Jerry Reed was Jerry Reed, never tried to be someone else. I truly enjoyed everything he did.
Parker was a real piece of work he wanted 50% of the rights but we now know what Jerry told him to do. Well done Jerry.
Pity Elvis took so long to do the same. Well don Mr Reed.
Bat 21 is a completely underrated movie. A great story, with great characters. Jerry Reed was perfect in that movie.
I agree! Thanks for watching!
he wasn’t in that movie. that was gene hackman
@@timmyshore3755He played Colonel Walker. Gene Hackman and Danny Glover were the two stars, but Jerry was the third actor credited.
Jerry Reed was a under rated singer and guitar player, in my opinion. He's one of my favorites to come out if that era of country music
One of mine too. Thanks for watching Joseph!
I made a Jerry Reed CD while deployed to Afghanistan (09-2010). Listen to it often.
@@sarge420 m
Average singer, incredibly talented guitar player.
@@sarge420 thanks for your service
I grew up an urban guy into 'northern' music, hard rock, metal, 60s psychedelia etc, but Jerry Reed spoke to me the minute I saw him on film. Then I learned what a great musician he was. Super Talented. He deserves endless praise and monuments.
Similar story here. I'm this man's biggest fan right now.
Phenomenal American talent.

A Man with a real good Heart is Jerry Reed... 💖
Jerry Reed was one of the coolest cats to ever pick up the guitar!
I remember watching Jerry on so many TV shows back in the late 60’s and 70’s, especially “Hee Haw”!
What a talented musician!
Always loved Jerry Reed! Such a joy to listen to and watch! I always think of him with a smile on my face. RIP sir. 🥰
I guess what impressed me the most about Jerry Reed was his dedication to his wife and kids! Class will show!
Every time I think of Jerry Reed, I smile. Jerry did that to folks. He seemed to enjoy each venture he took on. I still watch videos of him playing his guitar with other greats and he never tried to upstage them, but he genuinely enjoyed other people's talents. He was just being himself, and that's the greatest compliment anyone can get. And, as an added bonus, he could pick the heck out of a guitar.
You are so right. Gotta love this guy! Thanks for watching!
Haha!! I remember those days!! I excelled at dropping the needle exactly where I wanted on tracks I was learning!! Black Diamond strings and fender tortoise picks and my little 45 player. Good times!
Wow! Amazing that you did Jerry Reed! Thank you! He was such a *monster* guitar player, few people realize what a true virtuoso he was - they know he played but may not realize how amazing his chops were. He was one of like 4 (or 5?) guitar players that Chet Atkins called in his lifetime "certified guitar player" - the towering Tommy Emmanuel being one of the others so he was in stratospheric company in that club. There seems to be a cluster of people who started as guitar masters then became country-pop personas and in the end the general public has no clue the level of player they really were (Glen Campbell, to name another and there are several).
You're welcome. I am a big fan of Jerry Reed. His style is just so cool and he was a great guy. Oh yeah Tommy Emmanuel just amazes me. I could listen and watch him play for hours! I did a video on Danny Gatton, check it out. He was great with his right hand also. His tone was gritty but the guy could really play. Thanks so much for watching and your comment!
Jerry practiced guitar for 10 hours a day. Can you believe that! Ten hours.. everyday!! That's dedication!!
Met this man while fishing once. A true human and down to earth. Talked fishing and hunting with him for over an hour, not one mention of the famous person he was, just another man with a fishing pole.
I've always loved Jerry.
I remember sitting in front of my parent's old record console with my guitar. Moving that needle back and forth.. trying to catch something that would work from his picking style.
😂
Son!! I LOVED that man.
Sounds like I picked a winner!
I'm 55 now..I'd like to think that Jerry would be proud of the effort I put into guitar.
We miss you, man.😢
Every time i saw this guy on tv, a smile came to my face
It still does.
Jerry Reed was the best guitarist Ive seen in 59 years.
I grew up watching Smokey and the Bandit as a kid, watch it hundreds of times and only today after turning 50 I discovered Snowman played the Main theme song, Maybe its because I live in Scotland and Country Music maybe isnt as big here as the states that this completely passed me by. Today I discovered Jerry Reed and he is simply an amazing artist :-)
Even though Jerry Reed had won multiple musical awards, it's almost criminal how underrated he was, not only obviously as a GREAT singer/guitar player, but also as a natural actor. In my opinion, Jerry's unique musical style created an unprecedented genre called "country funk" (especially during the song "Amos Moses"). Jerry was one of a kind, that's for sure. And good to read that he has fans from around the world.
I may have a song or two by Jerry Reed on my "great live music" playlist.
@@mikes3827 not underrated at all, maybe not known around the world ( obviously known in the States especially the South)
But anyone that knows him, rates him as one of the best guitarist's. He's very rated and respected by his peers,B.B .King doesn't play with anyone. Not known is not the same as underrated
@@davidmellish3295 Semantics. By not being as widely heralded as Jerry Reed should have been, he is underrated.
We're both HUGE Jerry Reed fans, I just don't think Jerry got the widespread credit that he was/is due, that's all.
@@mikes3827 no I disagree, he's not widely known and recognised by the masses and doesn't get the credit he deserves because they don't know about him. BUT those that do know him, rate him. So he's not underrated by anyone that knows him. So he's not underrated at all,not being known and getting the credit he should is different to being underrated, because you have to know someone in order to rate them,so underrated is the wrong word my friend
God took this man way too soon. What a legend he will always be!
Amos Moses has always been one of my favorite songs he wrote along with (Hard Times)
Wow! I really, really loved this documentary! Thank you so much for taking the time to do it… I felt you did a perfect job exemplifying Jerry’s life and I have a better understanding of him now. What more could you ask from a documentary? Thank you again. Long live Jerry Reed… when we were in Nashville several years ago, we visited the mausoleum where he is buried and paid our respects. Blessings, Roo
I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching and your comment!
And a great comedian.
Yes he was!!
I was born in 69, while my pop was serving with the 4th infantry division in Viet Nam and I've been a fan of Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins since I was a little kid. Two horns up, to these two awesome guitarists! 🤘🏻
Would those be Texas Longhorns?
Go Horns

Meredith Jefferys was my dad’s hired man. He had my brother and I listening to this music from the time we was little kids. Jerry Reed, Rodger Miller, Chet , Willie, and the rest of the greats. So blessed!
This was a talented man. A good actor , a prolific songwriter and an expert guitarist.
Crazy talented cat.
A friend of mine was working in a Nashville hospital around '95; he kept hearing a very distinctive voice that he recognized and had to go investigate: it was Jerry. He said he was super nice and approachable and they chatted a bit.
RIP Turquoise GOAT.
Had his single "Amos" on 45, I can still remember playing it over and over....
Jerry was and is a great performer I enjoy his music and movies and his laugh the snowman
It is my opinion that "Smokey and the Bandit" was one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I loved that movie!! Thanks for watching!
It was Alfred Hitchcock’s favourite film too ! Look it up…he thought it was the perfect film.
@@joelfildes5544 LOL you're right I looked up too!! Said it was the last movie he watched before he died!! cool info..thanks for sharing joel!
My favorite Jerry Reed movie was "The Survivors" (1983) where he co-starred opposite Robin Williams and Walter Matthau. An underappreciated little gem. =)
The day I heard he'd passed on, I went into a sad time of life. I thoroughly enjoyed his many crafts and the man. He cultivated beautiful laugh lines that ran deep into his manly handsome face. He earned his joyous face through hard times and difficult scoundrels and came out smiling, successful and respected.
To heck with the Nashville snobs for holding off his well earned and deserved entrance to the Hall of Fame. Jerry will long be remembered, respected and enjoyed while the voting snobs will only draw a "Who?" In remembrance.
Only wish I could've shared a warm beer with him while sitting on a sandbag during my tour as a Marine in Vietnam. That would've made my tour special as well as memorable. Jerry RIP.
Well said! Thanks for watching and your comment!
Jerry was an icon, his guitar playing, lyrics and personality were all a symbol of him. R.I.P. Jerry and thanks
Reed was fantastic in The Survivors with Robin Williams. Loved it.
"I'm not committing adultery, I'm committing murder" his wife says "Thank God" I will always remember that scene.
Boy...you really can’t excuse yourself from an inactive or difficult early life for failure later...what an amazing talent👍‼️🏴☠️
he was who he was and people loved him . what more could anyone ask for . I don't think Jerry ever acted a day in his life he was just being Jerry for the camera
Well said!! Thanks for watching!
Nice to see this but I'd like to see a proper full length in depth documentary on Jerry Reed. His life, unseen footage, interviews, TV appearances, the guitars and influences. An amazing performer on many levels. One of the most interesting country guitarists.
I doubt you will ever see one now as it would cost too much to get the copyrights for the movies and the songs to make up for the viewers it would bring in. Maybe someday someone with some bucks will do an hour long one on him...He deserves it!!! Thanks for watching!
He was truly a giant in the entertainment industry but always stayed true to himself. That is a model worth following.
As a kid, Jerry was the cause of many sad afternoons for me trying to learn his licks. Back then, you would by a 45 and slow it down to 33 and tune your guitar to what ever pitch that was so you could slow the licks down and learn. With Jerry, a lot of his tunes were in a special tuning he made up for that tune. Some Jerry tunes I never learned until CZcams and I could figure out the tuning. He was a witch of a guitar player!!
EVERYBODY loved Jerry!
I love everything Jerry did from music, movies, what a great personality this man had with good friends to boot. R.I.P. Jerry Reed thank you so very much for all the entertainment you gave the World. ❤ Truth is I sure miss Jerry movies, songs and his voice.
High Ballin', another trucking movie that was awesome with Peter Fonda as the Iron Duke.
He's always been one of my favorite songwriters, guitar players, actors and personalities. Hard to not like Jerry Reed. And he was just a good, down-to-earth guy who married his sweetheart and loved his family. Great video and tribute to an amazing artist.
Thanks, I feel the same way about Jerry! Appreciate you watching!
I miss Jerry, quite honestly the best picker ever, humble man at that, God Bless You and your family Jerry 🙏🙏🙏🙏
One of a kind talent. Miss you SNOWMAN, RIP, high on that mountain. Your legacy lives on sir. Thanks for the memories.
Jerry, between you and me,
i'm glad you both picked and acted.
Thank you for both.
Jerry made country fun and accessible.
I first saw Jerry Reed as millions of others did in the 1978 movie Smokey and the Bandit. I was in ninth grade. Me and my friends all saw that movie countless times (I actually think the number was around 27 or so). While my friends all had the hots for the Trans Am and even I'll admit that car was one of the sexiest cars of the age, I was in awe of that KW just as I was even earlier in my life with the show Movin On and the '74 KW W900 that Sonny Pruitt (Claud Akins) and Will Chandler (Frank Converse) drove around the country. I think the reason why "Smokey" was such a hit was not only because of all the great car gags and banter but because of the friendship that Jerry Reed and Burt Reynolds shared in real life showed through Cleadus Snow and Bo Darble. We should all be so lucky to have e friends like that.
Very well said!! It sure was a great movie and I still watch it today! Thank you for your comment!!
Smokey and the Bandit was my favorite show when I was a kid. True talent and he will be missed.
Reeds instrumental Jerry's Breakdown is one of the most difficult guitar pieces ever.
Agree. Jerry in my opinion was one of the hardest guitar players to copy. The guy had such a great style of playing. Thanks for watching!
I need to check that out again.
His bass player left a comment on here, go check out his cover of it with three guys, they nail it
I'm a long time guitar player. One of the best players I've ever heard and one of the hardest to emulate/copy. He was just wired into that instrument.
Well said. His style was something he just felt and made it very hard to learn or duplicate. Thanks for watching!
It's good to hear that Jerry Reed lived a happy life. He certainly brought joy to a lot of people through his music and his acting. I'm a guitar fanatic, all genres, so that's my favorite aspect of his performing career. Now I'm gonna go listen to "The Claw."
What a character What a Guitarist. Legend
Yes he was. Thanks for watching!
Jerry Reed should have won the Being Jerry Reed Award.
Just cuz he was so cool.
A truly great documentary. I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry twice - in Nashville, in 1974, and again in Georgia back in the 80s'. He signed photographs for me and gave me a Gator belt buckle. Needless to say "Gator" is one of my favourite movies. I'm in the UK and a former BBC local radio broadcaster and played Jerry so many times on my country music show. He'll always be number one to me and, again, thanks for this superb documentary.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!

Jerry Reed was not only great but kept fans at the edge of their seats with the wonder of what he would do next. You didn’t mention his style of comedy and sense of humor combined with that superb beaming smile. To know Jerry Reeds work was to appreciate his humor too.
I first heard of Jerry Reed when I tried my luck on guitar at 15 years old. East bound and down One of my favorite guitar riffs.
Jerry Reed is awesome I love many songs of his Guitar man, Lord Mr.Ford, East Bound and Down, The Legend, She got the goldmine and I got the shaft are just a few I love from Jerry he is a great guitarist one of the best in my book.

One of my musical heroes and one of the best actors to ever grace Hollywood. I loved him bigger than life. Smokey and the Bandit and Highballin were my 2 favorite movies with Jerry Reed.
Dolly Parton denied Elvis too. It was for her song I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.... Later this became a SMASH hit for Whitney Houston on the soundtrack of the movie BODYGUARD!!! I was not aware that Jerry Reed was part of this club too. Thanks for giving me some new information ...
Houston TEXAS
Please blame Parker and not Elvis. All Elvis did was sing. Parker did the rest whilst EP was slowly dying.
Loved Jerry. His playing style, his singing and particularly his writing. Amos was a very clever song among others. I recall him talking about the Elvis recording of US MAIL . He laughed and said that the reason why they couldn’t get the song right was bc Jerry was the only one who could play it the way it was intended. And told Elvis, “well, Elvis, if you wanna have it sound right, you’re gonna have to get me to come in and pay me to play it” and laughed ( while in his boat fishing ). Jerry - no one like him again.
Jerry made many great lesser known recordings before getting famous in the 70's. Also a great session player !
back in 1984 I got to see him in concert with Alabama and Juice Newton. FANTASTIC!
Jerry Reed is one of those special characters that just have "It". They seem like they are just being themselves at all times. I felt the same way about Mac Davis
what a wonderful soul... and great heart... I had a chance to sit on his bus, interview him.. with his laughter.. and kindness

I got to meet Jerry Reed when I worked on “The Waterboy” as a driver. I was an avid bass fisherman, and when Jerry found out, he made a point of meeting me. We agreed to go fishing before the production finished, but it never happened. I was always a big fan of his music and movies.

When the director told Jerry to come up with a song, Jerry did just that. Played it and said I can change it around if you want. The director said if you change it at all, I'm going to strangle you. RIP Jerry
One of the best finger pickers ever. His 'claw' right-hand technique was pretty original for a guitar player and closer to what banjo players do.
