This week, Savannah changes things up a bit. On this episode, Savannah explores the strange and twisting case of Natalia Grace. She was adopted by the Barnett family in 2010. Later, the Barnett family claimed Natalia was actually an adult who attempted to kill them. And it only gets stranger from there. Out of everything, honestly the thing that strikes me most as her lying about age is that at 8 she gave the Barnett’s the silent treatment for 4 days. Like, I have an 8 year old. There is NO way he could not talk to me for 4 whole days 😅

Okay as a dentist, teeth can really give a good estimation of the age , a dentist should’ve been there the moment the adoption agency tried to figure out her age. It’s bizarre how she had all her permanent teeth at the age of 8 because canines and 2nd molars erupt at the age 10-12 ,and from the formation of the 3rd molar they can tell if she’s 17-20 or older or younger.
L A I had all my “wisom teeth” at the age of 15. Had all my other teeth out by the age of 8-9. Sometimes it doesn’t match the estimate :) it can still be right.
Sabina Ullah i agree it varies between humans but it’s relatively rare to have all your permanent teeth at the age of 8 but not impossible. Plus even if your wisdom tooth erupts at 15 ( also some some wisdoms are impacted it never erupt to the oral cavity)it’s root is still not completely formed for 3 more years. So if she was 22 her wisdoms would appear to have fully formed roots.
L A my first wisdom tooth erupted at 12 and all of them had erupted by the time I was 15... not sure about their roots though.

@veronica carlson If Jacob could go to college at 11, why couldn’t Natalia go to LARA? The readiness test is at junior high level, and they give you a tutor if you’re not at that level yet. Because the Barnetts got her age changed to 22, she could not enroll in regular school. At least the kid tried, but she was unable to obtain her GED.
((Edit-Despite reading about LARA’s purported entry requirements, I now believe that is false. I personally called LARA and inquired about “entry tests” and was told there is NO test you must “pass” to enroll. The test ONLY determines what classes you need. You cannot fail the test. ANY score is good enough to enroll. That’s what Vera at LARA told me))

Adoption agencies lie about kids ages all the time they know people want to adopt younger kids and at 18 they are too old. So it is so possible. So if they lied and she really believes it maybe not her fault but yah 8 and 22 is a stretch maybe she was actually 12 or something. Holes in the story on her side though. Weird she was living alone for 1 year

I'm sorry but I have ZERO sympathy for Natalia!! There's simply no way she was a child when she was left to live on her own. The fact alone she passed at least a high school level entrance test to even be able to take GED classes, is enough evidence for me that she is much older than she claims to be! Leaving a grown ass woman to live on her own is not a crime. & although she has disabilities, once she is grown it is her responsibility to accomodate herself for her needs. NOT the parents whom adopted her. She was mentally mature enough to survive on her own. She lived for over a year on her own, attending GED classes before anyone else got involved! I think Natalia has learned to con people so she can continue to gain sympathy and bum off people and their kindness because she doesn't want to take care of her own responsibilities. It's not like the Barnetts dumped her off on the curb! They paid her rent, for well over a year, they helped her apply for EBT which she was receiving! They paid her utilities, set her up in GED classes, etc.... They even still kept contact with her afterward to check up on her!! Natalia stopped talking to the Barnetts. Not the other way around! I've been keeping up with this case and Natalia is a grown ass woman that needs to stop lying!! THE BARNETTS HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG!

Julianne.....under new documents re aging Natalia to 22 back then Natalia was a young adult woman. However, I am going off the entrance exam to be able to start Adult classes she had to pass with an IQ or mentality of a 16 yr old or older and Natalia passed the entrance exam and attended LARA adult school for almost a year...I do believe Natalia was 16 going on 17 when she was left in her own apartment...not 22 ...but I do agree with your post 📪

Clearly the strip mall adoption agency is most likely involved in human trafficking, and the adoption of Natalia was incredibly shady from the get go. Why isn't anyone talking about that agency? They need to be investigated.
I thought trafficking when I heard a child had 14years added to her birthdate. Hmmm, what is a crime if done to a child but not a crime if she’s over 18?? Was there motive to make her “legal”?

Yeah when I seen the biological mother speak on them talking into her giving up her child. The parents paid 30k for it... sounds like they stole the baby from the real mother & sold her. The barnetts are idiots. I would've had my lawyer present to read the fine print & checked the agencies background before shaking hands. It was a SCAM!
my theory is that she was still young when she was adopted, but she wasn't a CHILD. i'm thinking she was between the ages of 12 and 14 during adoption, which is why she was more mature, had pubic hair, and already had her menstrual cycle. which means that by the time she was forced to live on her own, she was probably around 16-18. teenagers can get emancipated around these ages, so it would make sense that she would know how to take care of herself by then. i don't think she's thirty, but definitely in her twenties by now. perhaps after so many rounds of her being returned by foster families, the people running the whole system decided to lie about her age because the younger a child is, the more likely they are to get adopted. this could be why the agency / the person they met with at the strip mall kept changing her age from 6 to 8. natalia was probably told that she needed to keep this act up and that from now on, she should say she's 8 rather than 12-14 if she wants to stay with a family. i do believe she was definitely violent and something is absolutely wrong with her, but i don't believe she was a grown adult when she was adopted. either way, this girl is scary and i feel that her original adoptive parents simply did not know what to do besides get her age changed and abandon her for the safety of their kids.

Cephalomegaly is defined as having a thin, transparent scalp; a bulging forehead with prominent spaces between the bones of the skull (fontanelles); and a downward gaze or bulging eyes. None of which this woman has either. She is an adult.

Sound a little bit too much like that movie I'll tell you what I believe I believe the Barnett's or a Sinister couple who came up with this idea and in order to be able to leave the United States to further their savants son's education in Canada. I have to admit I believe their Story 2 until the original family that was supposed to adopt Natalia came forward. The dozens and dozens of pictures taken of Natalia with their biological daughter who has the same type of dwarfism proved it to me! She was obviously a small child in those pictures and has only aged since. I believe she is 16 years old just now in the Barnett's should absolutely be charged with neglect
I am from Ukraine, but I live in the US for 10 years now. When I was working as a waitress, I had this party of people in my section who asked me where I was from and so I told them, then they told me that they had adopted 2 siblings from the Ukraine and asked me if I could speak to them in Ukrainian, to which I said sure no problem. I was very surprised when those kids looked at me with such a horror in their eyes that I felt super uncomfortable, like if I've said something wrong. When the family was about to leave, their father approached me and said that those kids were very abused and maybe me speaking ukrainian triggered some bad memories in them, which I agree could be very true. He clearly was shocked as well and obviously thought his kids will be happy to hear their native language.

You adopt the language(s) you’re exposed to the most during your childhood and when learning other languages later on you’re often so used to the pronunciation of your own mother tongue that you pronounce the words in these other languages a little weirdly (although through enough exposure to new languages it is possible to get rid of your accent in some of them). Her not having an accent is actually an indication that she came to the US as a child.

There are WAY TOO MANY close calls that Natalia says was just an accident or misunderstanding! I’m a dental hygienist, there’s no way a 8 year old would have all their permanent teeth. Definitely not there 3rd molars (wisdom teeth). Also couldn’t they do DNA to see if the woman who claims to be Natalia’s mother is in fact her mother?
She didn't have all of her permanent teeth and didn't have all of her molars. Anyways, as a dental hygienist you are uninformed. Premature 3rd molar eruptions can in occur in different ethnicities around 12-13 at their earliest--- which is around the age that Natalia was biologically when her third molars began to come in.
To be fair I got my molars early and it absolutely CAN happen.

I’ll rephrase…. I worked for 13 years at a children’s dental office. I did not personally see an 8 year old with all their permanent teeth or with their 3rd molars. So I suppose yes it’s possible, I know just about anything is possible. I had many patients come in and their parents think their 3rd molar was erupting …. It was not. It was the child’s 2nd or “ 12 year molars” I was speaking of my own experience. I apologize for any confusion.

@@jessicamedlin9153 No Dr. Phil did not he went on a radio talk show on Sirius Xm you can find it on youtube ....anyways Dr Phil said she had Conspiracy Theories for every question, and he also said she has been with close to 30 families and had some act of violence with most of the past families. This give me a speculation that some of the families called into the show

Here’s a preview: Hospitalized 9 times with her 1st pregnancy; premature labor (3 weeks early); doctors told husband “You’ll be bringing home a wife or a baby but not both”; stoke at age 30; Lupus diagnosis follows; son diagnosed with Severe autism (the son who gave a TEDx talk); 2nd son severely ill with neurological disorder; and on and on. I think a dr could diagnose Munchausen’s just on the book alone. Then watch her various videos. She calls her method of reaching kids with autism the Spark method and claims to have taught over 200 kids and got similar results as she did with her own son. The bonafide genius that she takes credit for. The grandiosity is strong with Kristine.

I’m kind of confused as to why her age is such a huge mystery especially with medicine being so advanced these days. I feel like it should be easy to run dental records & DNA to determine an accurate age. In all honestly this girl gives me the creeps. There are also many disabled children whose disabilities alters their overall growth. The general public doesn't seem to be educated on the abnormalities of the body or the sad corruption of poor countries foster systems or their culture revolving around disability. I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

this is REALLY strange, I haven't ever heard of a case like this one. Seems like there are a lot of loop holes in the case overall. She is definitely older than she says she is because of all the evidence there is saying she is maybe 30 years old. There is no birth certificate either, a big red flag. A family would not move all the way to Canada to get away from a supposed child. She is definitely hiding her true identity and have people helping her.

I didn't hear about the movie until 2015 when Blockbuster video in my town was going out of business ...I bought a whole bunch of movie's for $2 each and ORPHAN was one of the movies however I didn't actually watch it

There is.... the sketchy birth certificate that reads 9/4/3 and the sketchy full body Passport Picture with Natalia standing like a mini soldier with cropped short hair, a black t shirt on, blue jeans and little tiny brown UGG Boots on her feet. I have never seen a full body passport picture before Natalia's is the only one. I find it suspect the 1st Adoptive Parent's nor Barnett's received any medical records from Ukraine Orphanage for their adopted daughter born with a birth defect and dwarfism who needed much medical surgeries even before she was adopted in 2008 at age "supposedly" six......If the adoptive parents would have received Ukraine Medical Records at time of adoption consent then we would not be here today in such a scandal.
DNA can prove biologically related or not but cannot prove false or doctored documents.

Dads story started out that Natalia was trying to kill the family.Then changed to Natalia was getting the piss beat out of her and being abused by the family..So which is it Pop? He said himself he stood by and watched her be beaten,but never did anything to help her because he was afraid of his wife.

I felt Dr. Phil’s main objection was that Natalia had been left and she was their child regardless of her behavior. But, overall he seemed doubtful of her story. He said he didn’t believe she was 16, nor 30. He described her as seeming “coached,” having “practiced stories,” and using “very layered conspiracy theories” to explain how she got to this point. On the Jenny McCarthy Show, he likened her to a Chucky doll, who was a fictional serial killer. And, when she asked whether he thought it was impossible that she could pose a danger to her family, his response was “well, but no.” A part of the court filing includes information about verbal and written threats Natalia made about wanting to kill family members to a case manager and mental health professionals. They had a professional and legal obligation to warn family members because they deemed those threats to be credible. As a clinical psychologist, I wish he had shared suggestions, as he has done on other shows with difficult family situations, about possible options with family situations such as this one.

When I adopted my cat, they called and wanted me to meet her. Then they told me to wait a few days before they would accept an answer.
I think this supposed agency was a scam to get her into the country with a free place to live.

I was adopted through an attorney and since my parents had already had a home study within three months with the state to adopt my sibling, I was taken home the same day my parents met me. I was three months old, my birthmother and her husband were there with me and once my parents saw me crying and dirty they said yes on the spot. They didn’t know I would be there or that they were going to end up with another child that day. I’m still shocked at my own circumstances and think about how much harder it is to adopt an animal than it was to adopt me.
I am very grateful for the life I have been given and that I ended up in the most wonderful family full of love.

I don’t know if they are in on it necessarily. I personally think they are helping to cover for her because they feel bad for her as a result of her rough life. They could also just be that naive and oblivious as well to what is going on. After all, no one wants to be told they are being scammed by a grown woman pretending to be a child. If what everyone said about her violent behaviors are true though, they will eventually come out again. If she really does have severe philological issues she could hide them for a short time or so, but they will come to surface eventually if she isn’t getting the necessary help she needs so I hope nothing bad ends up happening. That Dr. Phil interview made me think the girl is definitely not telling the truth about everything. It’s like they are trying to do damage control before the trial happens. It’s not just a trial for the guardians because if the Judge rules them innocent then that could have harsh consequences for Natalia going forward as well.

Children can be passed through foster care system pretty quickly it doesn’t mean she was violent. She’s also heavily disabled and for some families with multiple children it may have been too much.
I can remember things as young as 3 years old. I'm 40 now. this little person is good at deceiving everyone.
Trauma has massive effects on people especially vulnerable children and a way kids survive traumatic experiences is to lock them away and pretend they arent happening (dissociate). Just because your memory is strong doesn't mean everyone's is as everyone is different!

If you adopt from overseas, it is very common for kids to act one way with the adopted family but totally different with a “readoption” family. It is one of the major reasons that there is a readoption issue with some of these kids, they are just broken.
Everything about this is so bizarre. My family knows them and was around when all of this was happening and we all definitely believe that she is older than she says she is.

@@skontheroad She may have spoken Russian in the part of Ukraine she was from. Her bio mother was found and she supplied a birth certificate indicating she was born in September 2003. I just watched "The strange case of Natalia Grace" She was taken in by another family and lived with them and their other children for years without any problems.

I just watched a snippet of the doctor Phil interview & it seems like she is lying out of her adult teeth!! When he said she should have been functioning like a 6-7 year old in the apartment and talking about basic living she looked terrified as if he caught her
Not to mention when she said Kristine told her they were moving to Canada and she was not going with them .......mDr Phil said "Did you tell her Iam 8" ....Natalia put a little cheesy tell tale smile on her face like if to say I got caught... but she says "well I didn't know what to say I was confused."

Amber Brakeman......Yup.....when she was at the psychiatric hospital for about 2-3 months Natalia told 2 different psychiatrist she liked doing those things to the Barnetts because it was fun. Near the end of Dr Phil interview she said after Barnetts do their time (meaning jail time) she hope they get right with God....with a sly smile on her face.

Please talk to the DePauls. They tried adopting Natalia before the Bennett’s and have been speaking publicly about the fact that she is 16. They have pictures of Natalia from a few months before the Bennett’s adopted her, she was then only just loosing her front baby teeth.

Further, the facts of the case, including the number of families she has lived with, has been grossly misrepresented. The sum of the medical and dental evidence overwhelmingly points to a grave injustice to a child.

So to anyone who’s wondering her birth mother was tracked down her name is Anna gava a dna test was done which proved they were related and her original birth certificates were found her birthday is September of 2003. Some of the charges were dropped but not all. The charges that were dropped were having to do with child neglect, as legally in the system her birth year was still 1989 making her an adult in the eyes of the law. The charges that weren’t dropped were about them neglecting a disabled person whom they took into their care.
I’m just wondering if she doesn’t have access to a birth certificate, how does she know her birthday? Why don’t they reach out to the adoption agency that had her before?

I think that because legally she is at an age where she can get her own medical care she has probably gotten birth control and is taking it without the placebo pills to regulate not having a cycle since that is one of the things that gave her away before, she’s trying to correct it not taking into account that now it would be perfectly normal for her to have it

They DID take her to dentists. It’s all in the police reports. The first dentist estimated 8 to 9. The second estimated 6 to 9. They KNEW she was a child

Nope, Natalia told Doctors and Therapists when she was admitted to psychiatric hospital that she was 18 when Barnett's first adopted her, there is audio and video recordation of her sessions, she also wrote in a notepad while admitted at psychiatric hospital, she wanted to Kill Kristine and the Brothers. These allegations are coming from trained Medical Experts (not the Barnett's)... The Court System has requested all Natalia's Medical Records before, during and after Natalia was with the Barnett's, back in September 2019. Everything will come together hopefully in January 2020. The Barnett's might be headed for prison.

I highly doubt there are any recorded sessions with Natalia preserved, in they ever existed in the first place, since 2011-2012. I would be very surprised if any recordings were ever made in the first place.

Actually when I was 12 I was going to an evening adult education class. It’s not impossible, just very unusual.
Keep in mind an 8 year old stayed in an apartment alone, went to school aka adult skool. Went to get food. Washed, dressed, comforted herself in times of need, wasnt malnutrition at all... for a damn year.. a whole year an 8 year old living alone????? THAT WAS NEVER ALONE BEFORE...

I believe since this video was uploaded that the woman claiming to be Natalia’s mother was confirmed to be telling the truth and had her birth certificate, which revealed she was born in 2003. I don’t believe much of the Barnetts story is supported by actual evidence. Additionally, bone density exams can be off by about two years. She had multiple exams and they all came back around the same age. I’m not saying they lied about everything. She could have very well threatened to kill them, however Natalia’s experiences indicate she suffered from trauma which often leads to behavioral issues.
It really does say a lot the fact that she couldn’t be placed in one home permanently. There’s so many underlying issues that need to be talked about besides just her age. (Which is defff older than 16)
I think she’s older as well, I can’t believe that the family got charged with the dependent case, I hope the courts figure more information so you can do a part two! I hope they do a DNA test, and maybe see if they can even try to do a test to see how old she is, if you don’t try things then you’ll never really know tbh.
I've been watching a lot of these videos, according to the laws of the state the parents were charged in it doesn't matter if she was an adult. She was a legal dependent because of her disability according to the state law. They'll have to prove that paying for her rent, enrolling her in school, and setting her up with assistance means they didn't abandon her.

You said there was no way she could understand adult level classes at even 12, but you have no problem with the 15-year-old being accepted to university. I’m not saying that she also for sure understood everything in these classes while being a child, but come on. The allegations came from Natalia's adoptive parents. Kristine and Michael Barnett, who were charged with neglecting her when they abandoned her in an apartment in Indiana and left to Canada to pursue an educational opportunity for their 15-year-old, who happens to be a physics genius. Prior to allegedly abandoning her they legally changed Natalia's age from 9 to 22. Eventually, photos were released showing Natalia at age 19 (according to the Barnetts and her "corrected" age) having recently lost a baby tooth, former prospective adoptive parents came forward saying she was a child, a woman came forward claiming to be her biological mother confirming she was a child, and Natalia herself was interviewed on the Doctor Phil show also stating she was a child. Shortly after the Barnetts left for Canada Natalia was taken in by a couple, and currently resides with them, although they have been unable to obtain legal guardianship of her.
On December 27th Kristine and Michael Barnett they were in court for pretrial. Charges were added to the case, including charges alleging medical neglect leading to injury and disability. According to Natalia's doctor, Natalia requires a number of surgeries, both while in the care of the Barnetts and currently, and is in pain as a result of not having these surgeries. The prosecutor has documentation that Michael Barnett told Natalia's school that Natalia was in need of these procedures. Dental exams supporting Natalia's age to match her original Ukranian birth certificate were also introduced, previously bone scans were introduced supporting that she was a child. Additionally, the prosecutors received permission to collect Natalia's DNA and compare it to the DNA of the woman claiming to be her birth mother, and are hoping if it matches this will end any speculation about her age

My daughter is 12, tomorrow is her last day of 6th grade, she has an 11th grade reading level, math she struggles a little… My son is 16 and is studying for the GED, my 12yr old could 100% take and PASS adult education classes and could survive living on her own! Maybe not still 12yr olds could, but mine can cook, clean, sew, budget… it’s all in the skills they know

It seems all setup by parents like it sounds like lies. Maybe they were trying to cover up something that they did actually leave a kid alone and they were covering it up with this painted story of her being some psycopath. I believe that Kristine and Mike did not want her so they abandoned her. This is the only story that I think makes sense as a theory the other stuff doesn't make sense.
The dad has a story to explain him being in the bathroom while she was naked in the tub (claims his wife was there and called him in). He has a story to explain her being in his bedroom in the middle of the night (claims she went in there with a knife). Sounds like the guy was alibi building and attempted to preemptively discredit anything she might report.

This story was interesting I remember hearing about. But the biggest thing that really got me thinking she’s older than what she says is because doctors tested her bone morrow(sp?) and it shows that she is a lot older then 8 at the time I think they said she was in she 20s
Children that experience neglect and abuse in early childhood do not develop normally. They can seem extremely mature for their age, but it’s also very common for them to “act out” and become physically or verbally violent. It’s very hard to deal with these issues, especially when there are other children involved. So, I think the family did what they felt they had to do. I’m sure that being in an inpatient psych facility was very helpful for her. But that is pretty messed up to leave her all alone in an apartment with no one near by to help her

I don't think adoption agencies cold call people...and wasn't the agency in a state other than Florida? They also don't force you to say yes or no in 24 hours.
There’s proof that in 2009 she was still growing her front teeth and a kid usually loses teeth by 4-5. The other family that she was going to be adopted by before the Barnetts gave so much to prove she’s indeed an adolescent. But somehow people prefer the theory of her being an adult because it’s more interesting

She is supposedly from Ukraine originally, so there is not actual paper work on her (at least a birth certificate anyways).

I was born in Romania and actually have three birth certificates with different dates and information ... paperwork wasn’t the greatest in that time. But she definitely is not 16
I started college at 13, while going to high school. By the time i graduated high school i had 28 high school credits, and graduated in the top 10% of my class, and 5 credits away from having an associates degree. I'm telling you this to show you can take adult classes as a kid, with parents permission. I did have to get a letter from my school stating i was mentally mature enough to take college classes.

Looking at the recent comments it’s clear no one took the time to watch the actual documentary, her biological mother was found a dna test was done and birth certificate was produced. This girl was an actual child going through all of this, not a grown ass woman… Even her physician said she was a child and he was not allowed to testify. During a deposition via zoom Kristine Barrett’s lawyer was extremely disrespectful when the doctor told him that Natalia was a child not an adult, and he did X-rays to check her growth plates and they were still open which means she was still growing. These people clearly neglected this child .
I think in the Dr Phil interview, Natalia made a Freudian slip. When asked, are you a 30 yr old, she replied, "I don't feel 30"!. If you were asked at the age of 16, "Are you 30 yrs old?", that would not be your reply. Only one of many things I noticed!
