Here in Canada where I live, we have plenty of thick patches of blackberry. Rats always survive well in such patches, and my traps always catch plenty of rats if placed beside a good blackberry patch.

I hear a lot of talk about baiting and trapping. You will never be successful in controlling an infestation unless you seal all of the openings where the rodents are entering the building. Then you set traps inside to kill the remaining rats, that are sealed in. They will get hungry and thirsty, and go for the attractant on the trap. If you don’t seal all of the entry points, new rats will keep coming in, as they are attracted to the scent around the entry points.

I believe it was mentioned to initially attempt to use the traps first. To avoid the chance of poisoned rodents dying inside walls.

I agree with Bobby: You need to get your rat traps set 'in the rats' faces', and 10 feet or so in the wrong direction will not catch the rats.
