Great message! I have a question. What do you say to people who abuse this verse to keep people from using critical thought. For example, if you are 100% clear on a biblical teaching(and its right) and a persons says, "You're wrong.....you're leaning on your own understanding."

My pastor has a good way of handling it when I have questioned an interpretation of a bible verse: He has me read it, and shows me other parallel verses, or verses that refer to the same subject, and then without telling me what it means, he ask me what I think it means. If I misinterpret something, he clearly shows me in God's word where I was wrong, and when all is said and done... You can't argue with what you read yourself in the bible!
In most of the cases I have run into; the reasons why people have disagreed with clear bible truth, are clearly contradicted by other verses in God's word. When I run into trouble showing them the truth, it's only because I don't know the bible well enough.
Of course there are some that God has not blessed to see or hear the truth, and others that choose not to. In those cases; Best not to waste time in labor throwing pearls to the swine, but pray for God to give understanding.
I wish I could answer your question better, but all I know to do is stick to the bible. It really is the best way to show truth, and personal commentary often just confuses. The key to the truth that opened up understanding the bible for me was understanding the bible is mostly about "The Kingdom Of Heaven", which is different from the "Eternal Heaven" where we go when this worldly life is over. If you are interested: Here is a link to a 30 minute bible study that teaches about the kingdom of heaven using nothing but bible verses. It's very good!
