The song with the heaviest riff in the history of the band. Great song!

I believe this song was about the Siege of Montsegur of 1244... a castle in France attacked by French royal forces, all in the cause of brutal religion. Yes, this album was written in 6 weeks, and recorded on the studio floor w/ the band playing together like a concert... it started slow, but it really kicks in w/ 'No more lies' and 'Montsegur'...
'Dance of death' (title track) is a fantastic song - one of Janick Gers' contributions.
'Brave new world' was when Iron Maiden started going down the prog metal route (One could argue they tried & largely failed w/ 'Virtual XI')... and 'Dance of Death' was the continuation of that direction... Each Maiden album after 2000 always has songs that polarized the fans, as far as preference... But the band has always delivered songs that make each record a listening experience. 'Journeyman' is a mellow track, but Bruce Dickinson just made it a huge song vocally.
The 2006 album 'A matter of life and death' has a better cover, but the first single was 7+ minutes : "The reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" - and that is a fantastic song, right up there w/ the 80's hits... "Brighter than a thousand suns" is another standout... The 9+ minute "For the greater good of god" is a song I hear young Iron Maiden fans cranking out loud...

Another good song on this album. Bruce in his upper register in the chorus. Bruce was on holiday in Southern France and was so fascinated with the story of Montsegur that he wrote a song about it.

amazing powerful song. ıt s about the 13th century massacre of the Cathars by Catholic Chuch in the Castle Montsegur, burning women and children. Now it s time for the Dance of Death. Fans love it live and singing the riffs out loud. Bruce is at his peak when telling the story. Dance of Death has 3 solos all crazy. Adrian and Janik delivers perfectly

Awesome and inspiring reaction. Thank you!
I am always deeply impressed when Bruce shouts out his anger about pain and injustice: "Montsegur", "For the greater good of God", "Paschendale", "2 minutes to midnight", a.s.o.

Never played live. A fun exercise when you're all done with Maiden's catalog is to go back and generate a list of songs you really like that have either never been played live or not played live in 30+ years. You'll likely be surprised at how long the list is.

Easily equal best song on the album with Paschendale but the whole album is mega underrated, it has a very coarse heavy production & mix with the guitars right up there, love it

  • @user-fn4um6iy4o

The story behind the song is the Albegenes heresy and massacre. It was an atrocious attack on a group who had divergent beliefs about the nature of man (they believed the soul good and the flesh evil, binding the good part of man on earth). Whilst this potentially leads to many easy conclusions about what the ultimate (ending) belief might be, they were ultimately ended for their beliefs. Sadly not a lot survived in antiquity of their other beliefs and how they may have been at odds with the Papacy's insane ideas, but there is a lot of documented history about it worth a look.
Bruce's vocals are immense in this. Solo is great, much more patient than the original pace of the song might have you suspect. I tried performing this tune in a band when I was younger and we never got to the point of doing it live - was a bit too breathless for me to be able to do at the same level.
Definitely one of the best songs on the album, although I must admit I think the following album "A Matter Of Life & Death" has better songs on it.

Greetings and Love from Germany again. It is based on the true story of the Cathars (Bruce Dickinson was on a holiday in the area of Montsegur, in Southern France , and was so fascinated by the tale that he wrote a song about it), this song starts with an intro reminiscent of 'The Fallen Angel' and of some of the best rockers on the Piece Of Mind album.

Probably one of Maidens heaviest songs. I think a lot of songs on this album are quite heavy, as well as the next one. But yeah, this song absolutely fucks. I’ve said it before man but this is the stuff I have been dying to come round cause this is the stuff I heard initially. The next one is probably my favourite song from the reunion era. Yay thought this was gonna come today! Lol Didn’t like this one much at first but grew on me a lot. Some pretty fucked up history behind this one. The residents within Montsegur once overcome by the enemy had to deny their faith to live and those that didn’t voluntarily allowed themselves to be put on a pure and burned to death.
