    Thanks for the video. I had terrible insomnia for 35 years, more or less. Six months ago I gave up all refined sugar and my insomnia went away first night. Has not come back! 3 years ago I gave up wheat and my chronic bleeding hemorrhoids cleared up in two days. Other processed foods cause specific psoriasis type reactions for me.

    Got to give dr vik veer credit . The only NHS Drs in regards of sleep disorders and you working hard .
    Also nasal disorders can cause sleep disorders I.e , Diverted nasal septum nasal valve collapses and turbinate hypertrophy which correlates with sleep apnea/UARS . That’s why it’s important for all Drs to give patients with recurrent insomnia drug induced sleep apnea to check if there are throat disorders like uvula collapse or epiglottis collapse .

    This is a really nice summary of what I figured out by myself the hard way. I solved my chronic sleep onset insomnia by trying to care less about sleep. I started using sleeplessness as an advantage, whereby I could stay up later and do productive things. Now I fall asleep within minutes, even the night before an exam (returned to university in midlife to earn a graduate degree). I cannot recommend the books by Sasha Stephens and Daniel Erichsen highly enough. It's actually a lot like tinnitus. The more you obsess over and fear not sleeping, the harder it is to sleep.

    Thank you Vik that was very good. I thought I knew a lot about insomnia but there was a lot of food for thought there. Not sure if it would help anyone else but the other thing I found was I was pre-diabetic undiagnosed at time and also had a daytime lung problem still being sorted out. I suffer with ADHD without medication but I think that does wake my brain up a lot. Actually I suffer with quite a few of the things you mentioned and I'm also very interested in the vagus nerve connection. I think they might even be a bowel connection as well but I don't know enough about that. Anyway I'm sure there'll be other people here that really appreciate this as well. Thank you and look forward to part 2.

    Thank you for this Vik. I'm a long time insomniac. I shall try taking my anti depressant in the morning from now on but I often wake up followed by a big gasp. Sometimes it disturbs me to the point I wake up fully but others I just drift back off again. I know a boyfriend 40 years ago mentioned I only breathed about 4-6 times per minute. He woke me up because he thought it was dying. My BP used to drop to 60-70/50-40 when at rest alone so goodness knows what it was when I was asleep. It wasn't something that was talked about then. Even as a child I struggled to sleep and mornings were difficult and still are.

    Interesting and informative with the usual lively endearing delivery. I loved the description of the anxiety based insomnia which sometimes suffer from. I'm just a little disappointed you didn't mention menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and the associated adrenaline rush, it may be reading too much into it but it adds to the sense of women-specific medical conditions often being minimised or overlooked.

    • @VikVeerENTSurgeon
      @VikVeerENTSurgeon  Před 7 měsíci +2

      You are probably right. I had to do some reading for this one (outside my comfort zone), so I don't know much about it in the real world. Plus I'm male, and so it just didn't come to mind. I will try and be more mindful of this in the future. Absolutely right, those flushes can cause the problems you mentioned.

    Excellent as always Dr Veer! I would love to see a video on additional symptoms associated with sleep apnea. Example: food sticking to tongue far back into the throat (that darn peanut butter) or possibly inflammation in sinus and ears. If inflammation due to diet, alcohol consumption, allergies can make it worse.
    My sleep test stated I would wake 95-times PH, I could not take a simple nap upright without sounding like a pot belly pig, lol. I've been shifting to a more plant-based diet and surprisingly that little nap has been quiet as a mouse. A video on this would be awesome. Thanks! Keep up the great work! We appreciate you!

      It's interesting. I've lost 4 stone since march on a low carb meat only diet. Apparently I was told that the first part of the body that gets bigger in size when you put on weight is the back of your tongue. I always found myself choking when I was eating before the diet and now I hardly choke at all. I find it best to sleep on my back now and my AHI is rarely over 5 each night, down from 59 last year when I was 19 stone.

    • @VikVeerENTSurgeon
      @VikVeerENTSurgeon  Před 8 měsíci +3

      @@paulbacon5056 Wow. That's great! 4 stone is not an easy task. That info makes perfect sense, tongue fat is like out of sight out of mind. My 🍏 diet has lowered my body fat to 13% which has helped. As you know everyone loses/gains body fat in different order. I hopeful another 2% will help me get off the CPAP altogether.

    Wow! Well That’s me Done for. I have everything on the screen & sleep apnea which is not treated through waiting for a new machine due to mine on re call. But I take medication and cpap really doesn’t work and never has worked for me. Being so hard to get an appointment with I think I’m doomed. I’m pre diabetic and looks like I’ve Got AF! I’m Disabled so I don’t sleep. But I’ve taken all my medication now and sometimes I fall asleep after I’ve eaten and I’ve not felt tired. I just fall into deep sleep. I don’t drink tea or coffee. I don’t drink alcohol or smoke anything. But I do use my tablet but sometimes I put it down and sleep. I go through several weeks getting up early then fall back into sleeping all day and being awake at night. I’m waiting to see you. But haven’t held my breath yet. Getting to see you all in London I can not do at present.

      Hi andrewcollins i like you have been waiting a very long time to see mr vik veer. I thought i was on mr veers waiting list, i was waiting about 9 months before i contacted london hospital to see where i was on the waiting list to find i wasn’t on the list at all!!!!
      My dr had referred me to the wrong place and clinic, it was either the 5/6th referral my gp did that got me finally where i needed to be, (but by then a year had passed)where i was finally put on mr vik veers waiting list. And i had to start at the bottom of the list , think I’ve been on the waiting list 5/6 months.
      There is service called sleepstation that is NHS based
      . some postcodes can get this for free through their GP but in other areas where its not available for free NHS have discounted the course to £160. There is support and insomnia drs to help. . I wanted to do the course i paid for the course but not started but sadly had to ask for a refund as i had to buy food and pay my electric bill to paybut i cant afford it.

    I put in a request to see you after watching your videos two years ago and i am still waiting to see you, back then my sleep apnea was bad & now it's even worse,your team don't care to listen & has refferd me to some random ent doctor who forgot why I was there in the 1st place, I patiently waited for your team to 🔎 the problem which is the service you offer, to get to the root cause of sleep apnea via sedation which was your suggestion but none of that took place in the appointment & then i was told to go & just lose weight which you and i know is not the cause of the problem. All this took place on the 14th off October 2023 and to make matters worse the so called specialist I was seen by has vanished from your hospital as there no report written back to my gp even though he stated many times in the appointment that my condition is one off the worse in the country & it is an miracle that I am even waking up.
