Fish Habitat Improvements on the Deschutes River

- Partnerships create habitat improvements for salmon and steelhead upstream of Oregon's Pelton-Round Butte Hydroelectric Project. Relicensing the project, owned by Portland General Electric and The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, provided opportunities and funding to open up hundreds of square miles of stream and river spawning and rearing environment. This is a story of how cooperation between private and public groups can reach mutual goals through effective communication and commitment.
When talk started flowing between different people and groups, the water started flowing as well. Great collaboration work.
Given this presentation is now over 8-years old, there should be some data on the effectiveness of the improvements on fish populations. Please provide an update.

The next step of this is to reduce the eutrophication of the lower Deschutes which is caused by the increased cycling of surface water in Lake Billy Chinook. They don't seem to have the answer yet. We do have it. They need to call.
That is some awesome work you all have done is there any plans to add beavers to help restore the habitat and water table

Farmers should be financially supported to move from open air irrigation to micro drip based that feeds the water near the ground directly to the plants and develops a deeper root system

If this is so good for the Deschutes why is algae now covering the streamed below the dam dam?

In Ohio, it's farm runoff of fertilizers that's causing algae blooms in the rivers and streams. Not counting the occasional "accidental" releases of animal manure. They pay a small fine and life goes on.

This is a huge crock of bull. It is killing the river below the dam. Been coming here for over 30 yrs, and have been watching the lower river die.
It takes time to heal. 🤷♂️

In rainy Minnesota they tried this type of habitat improvement and it is a total disaster. Unfortunately, the MNDNR is uncapable of learning and they keep repeating their mistakes, wasting the natural resources funds.

@@rodshop5897 Personal observation of Minnesota DNR work on a variety of area streams in SE Minnesota that I fish on a regular basis.
Woody debris works fairly well on inside bends and slow straight sections. It washes out if you place it in high current areas or outside bends. The problem with using woody debris is that when it floods, wood floats up and it easily rips out of dirt banks.
They use cables to stake the debris down out here.
@@manfredstrappen7491 I've seen that as well. The other issue is that woody debris creates erosion eddy currents that wash the bank out behind the structure causing the cables to wash out as well.

It's hard to say , I know that as a specie's we won't last long without abundant and plentiful access to protein. And there's going to be billions more people.
So that means we are going to need more fish to consume.

Lots of squatters and homeless people living along the Deschutes...one I talked to said his biggest expenditure was ammunition.

Yeah, keep those dam engineers in their white lab coats away from areas that are not their home.
The fish ladder at the Pelton dam never worked!!! They are now catching the fish and dumping them into Lake billy chinook in 2023 This is a failed project. there has been no evidence of any fish spawning through these efforts in the upper Deschutes river basin, as well as it would be nearly impossible for the juveniles to make it back to the lower Deschutes. It makes absolutely no sense.
Take the dam out.
What will become of wetlands and their habitats, now that the supreme court has removed their protected status? Yet again, lut of ignorance and greed, birds, aquatic life, p,ants, and yes, your life have been put in jeopardy......
