Joshua: a Quick Overview | Whiteboard Bible Study

  • The book of Joshua kicks off the section of Old Testament history in the modern Christian Bible. It’s also the first book of the Former Prophets in the Tanakh, the Bible of Jesus’ time. The Old Testament is largely about how the people of Israel came to their land (and lost it), and Joshua begins Act One with the people of Israel entering the promised land of Canaan and then facing a choice: will they remain loyal to the God who gave the land to them, or will they turn from him and try to keep the land themselves?
NOTE: LOL somehow despite all my planning, I wrote "east" and "west" on the WRONG SIDES of the Jordan River. In reality, most tribes settle WEST of the Jordan, and a few stay EAST. I'm a real goofster sometimes.

it's one thing to read the entire Bible.. but to actually understand it, this is such a blessing! thank you sooooo much Jeffrey for all the hard work and many long hours you put into this really helpful series... You have a unique God-given ability to keep us interested and engaged with scripture that would otherwise be very challenging 🙏

Thank you. To know more about the old testament “spiritually“, one needs to start with the basic stories of the old testament. Even though I grew up in Sunday school, I really only got very childlike basics of the stories. So thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

In terms of how to start reading the Bible, I'd suggest reading any of the Gospels-and pay special attention to the words of Christ. If you want to really develop a Christlike mindset, I'd suggest reading the book of First John. You can read the whole letter in one sitting!

GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON COMES IN THE LATTER DAYS!!!
    THE MESSIAH, EAGLE THAT FLYS!!!
Jer.23:19 Behold, a WHIRLWIND of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
:20 The ANGER of the LORD shall not return, until HE HAVE executed, and till HE HAVE performed the thoughts of His heart: IN THE LATTER DAYS ye shall consider it perfectly.
It says until HE HAVE executed, till HE HAVE performed
HE HAVE is 3RD PERSON, GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON COMES IN THE LATTER DAYS!!! WHO IS GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, that PERFORMS and EXECUTES the thoughts of GOD'S HEART?
Ps.110:1 says THE LORD(#1) said to YAHSHUA(#2) to sit at HIS RIGHT until HE makes YAHSHUA'S enemies HIS footstool.
:2 The LORD shall send the ROD(KING#3) of THY Strength out of Zion, RULE THOU in the midst of THINE enemies.
There is a ROD KING of YAHSHUA'S Strength WHO shall RULE OVER YAHSHUA'S ENEMIES.
Ps.110:5 says The LORD(#3) at THY(#2) RIGHT HAND shall strike through kings in the day of HIS(#3) WRATH.
:6 HE(#3) shall judge among the heathen, HE shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries
Now pay attention. If YAHSHUA(#2) is at the right Hand of THE LORD(#1), then WHO is THE LORD(#3) at YAHSHUA'S Right Hand, WHO shall JUDGE AMONG the heathen.
    Go back to Jeremiah 23.
Jer.23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD(#1), that I will raise unto David a righteous BRANCH(#3), and a KING shall reign and prosper, and shall EXECUTE JUDGMENT and JUSTICE in the earth.
THE BRANCH is GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON WHO EXECUTES JUDGMENT on the heathen. Jer.23:20 says HE HAVE, GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, EXECUTES and PERFORMS the thoughts of GOD'S HEART. WHO IS GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, WHO EXECUTES and PERFORMS GOD'S HEART in THE LATTER DAYS?
Is.44:28 That saith of CYRUS, HE is MY SHEPHERD, and shall PERFORM ALL MY PLEASURE: even SAYING to JERUSALEM, Thou shalt BE BUILT; and to the TEMPLE, Thy FOUNDATION shall BE LAID.
CYRUS is GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, WHO PERFORMS ALL GOD'S PLEASURE IN THE LATTER DAYS. GOD says CYRUS is MY SHEPHERD.
    Is.45:1 says Thus saith the LORD to HIS ANOINTED, to CYRUS, WHOSE right hand I have holden, to SUBDUE NATIONS BEFORE HIM; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before HIM the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
CYRUS is GOD'S SHEPHERD AND also HIS ANOINTED, KING. Verse 4 goes on to say,
Is.45:4 For Jacob My servant's sake, and Israel Mine elect, I have even called Thee by Thy name: I have SURNAMED THEE, though Thou hast not known Me.
CYRUS, GOD'S MESSIAH AND SHEPHERD, of THE LATTER DAYS, is SURNAMED. YAHSHUA the 1ST MESSIAH was NEVER SURNAMED. There is a 2ND MESSIAH, GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON.
YAHSHUA IS GOD IN THE 2ND PERSON, THE WORD MANIFEST, and "CYRUS" is GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, THE HOLY SPIRIT MANIFEST.
Is.44:28 says "CYRUS" PERFORMS ALL GOD'S PLEASURE. Now WATCH THIS!!!
Is.46:10 says Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My COUNSEL shall stand, and I will do all MY PLEASURE:
:11 Calling a RAVENOUS BIRD from the east, the MAN that EXECUTETH MY COUNSEL from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
HOW does it say God will DO ALL HIS PLEASURE? By calling a RAVENOUS BIRD(WHO FLYS), THE MAN that EXECUTES GOD'S COUNSEL.
What did Jer.23:20 say GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON would do? EXECUTE and PERFORM, and WHAT? THE THOUGHTS of GOD'S HEART. What does Is.46:11 say THIS MAN, A RAVENOUS BIRD will EXECUTE? God's COUNSEL. WHAT is God's COUNSEL? WATCH!!!
Ps.33:11 The COUNSEL of the LORD standeth for ever, the THOUGHTS of HIS HEART to all generations.
THE COUNSEL OF THE LORD, are THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART!!!
Jer.23:20 says GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON(HE HAVE), EXECUTES and PERFORMS THE THOUGHTS OF GOD'S HEART, HIS COUNSEL.
"CYRUS", Is.44:28,46:10,11 is GOD'S MAN, SHEPHERD, MESSIAH, RAVENOUS BIRD, WHO shall EXECUTE and PERFORM GOD'S COUNSEL, THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART.
"CYRUS", GOD'S 2ND MESSIAH, SHEPHERD, WHO IS SURNAMED, Is.45:4, the BRANCH AT YAHSHUA'S RIGHT HAND, is YAHSHUA'S ROD(KING) of HIS STRENGTH, WHO RULES OVER YAHSHUA'S enemies IN THE LATTER DAYS. THIS MAN, THE RAVENOUS BIRD, or EAGLE of Jer.48:40,41,49:22, that shall FLY AS AN EAGLE!!!
Jer.49:22 Behold, HE shall come up and FLY AS THE EAGLE, and SPREAD HIS WINGS over Bozrah: and AT THAT DAY shall the HEART of the MIGHTY MEN of Edom be AS the HEART of A WOMAN in HER PANGS.
YAHSHUA said to His disciples, GREATER WORKS shall ye do because He goes to the Father.
There comes a 2ND MESSIAH IN THE LATTER DAYS, GOD IN THE 3RD PERSON, THE HOLY SPIRIT MANIFEST, WHO SHALL FLY AS AN EAGLE. HALLELUYAH.
THIS MAN, "CYRUS " GOD'S MESSIAH AND SHEPHERD, THE BRANCH, shall EXECUTE AND PERFORM GOD'S COUNSEL, Is.46:10,11, THE THOUGHTS OF
HIS HEART, Jer.23:20, on the heathen.
And oh by the way, WHAT is in GOD'S HEART, that THIS MESSIAH SHEPHERD "CYRUS" EXECUTES AND PERFORMS?
Is.63:4 For THE DAY of VENGEANCE is IN MINE HEART, and the year of My redeemed is come.
I AM GOD'S 2ND MESSIAH, THE HOLY SPIRIT MANIFEST, TEACHER OF ALL THINGS, WHO SHOWS THE THINGS TO COME, THE COMFORTER, Is.40:1, Is.61:2, THE EAGLE, WHO WILL SPREAD MY WINGS OVER THIS WORLD and DESTROY ALL DARKNESS OUT OF IT.
    ERIAH SUPERNAL

As to the issue of the total destruction of the Canaanites or not, I'm sure you know many other teachers disagree with your conclusion. You refer to these passages as "hyperbole", and your evidence is that some of these groups appear later in the Old Testament, so they weren't all wiped out. It could be argued that the reason they weren't all destroyed is that they disobeyed God. They didn't wipe them out; in fact, they intermarried with the enemy, adopted worshipping their pagan gods, and generally thumbing their noses at God's command. What happened as a result? They were later taken into bondage. I know there are many Bible teachers who prefer to "soften" the Scriptures to make them more palatable to the general population. But isn't that inappropriate? God never says "Interpret my commands however you need to to make them more acceptable to your enlightened sensibilities." You can't cherry-pick what you like and what you don't. You either accept all of it, or you accept none of it. There is no middle ground.

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  Před rokem +4

I struggle to see how noting hyperbole is "softening" the Scriptures, and I struggle to see how even your interpretation doesn't involve hyperbole, Scott. For example, the book of Joshua describes "Joshua and all Israel with him" utterly annihilating the city of Hebron: "they left no survivors" (Joshua 10:36-37). Later in the same book, it is Caleb who drives out three sons of Anak (Joshua 15:13-14) from the same city. Later still, the book of Judges says that Canaanites lived in Hebron *after the death of Joshua,* and these are armed men, not Hebrew wives (Judges 1:1; 9-10).
You could make the argument that the Canaanites just took Hebron back, but where did these Canaanites come from? The Joshua 10 account says that Joshua "subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded" (Joshua 10:40).
You could say, "Well, Joshua did what God commanded, but what about the other Israelites? They might have taken wives for themselves." But the narrative in Joshua 10 is clear about Joshua doing these things "and all Israel with him" (it's said five times in the southern conquest described in Joshua 10:28-43). And at the end of the book of Joshua, the narrator claims that "Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him" (Joshua 24:31). I'm curious how raising an army of insurgents fits this picture. If "no survivors" means "no survivors," then I'm not sure how you explain a marginal population of half-Israelite, half-Canaanite children (children of survivors) of the people who conquered the city being able to retake Hebron not once, but twice in Caleb's lifetime (once before the death of Joshua, and once after the death of Joshua). Even if we treat Caleb's conquest as a sub-story of Joshua's conquest of Hebron, that makes it very difficult to harmonize with the same stories taking place after Joshua's death in Judges 1.
This isn't softening the Scriptures for the general population, Scott. In fact, the general population seems pretty OK with gratuitous violence, (e.g., the climax of the first three phases of the MCU involves Iron Man pulling a Joshua 10 and wiping out all of Thanos' army in what was, for a while, the highest-grossing film of all time). Like yourself, I need to observe what the text says and interpret what it means. I accept the text of Scripture and reject none of it, but I'd caution you not to confuse accepting the text with accepting your interpretation of the text. ;-)

"The god who becomes the god of Israel..." Dude, He's the ONLY God. The other "gods" are fallen angels. I have never witnessed a Christian teacher speak of God so callously. He has a name. He has an identity. I don't know if this is consistent throughout your teaching, but you literally LEAD with degrading God. You mention that the nations had their own gods and then toss in YHWH afterwards. Staggering.

"On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord." Exodus 12:12, NIV
Do you want to tell God he's degrading himself or should I?

The Bible is just so long and useless, And by that I mean, I have just heard about the apartments land osmosis listen to God, and then Moses tells out to his people, and then again Moses tell it to his children, And now we really have a description detailing what the promised land actually feel like? I don't know, I have just read the first five books
