    Hello. I have some koi that were purchased roughly ten years ago. We thought we were buying standard "ghost koi" but as they grew it was evident two of them arent normal ghost koi and i cant find a definitive answer to what They are. Watching this video the closest match here is the "mizuho ogon" they have the same scale pattern along the top length of the fish and are scale less below this line but the big difference is, my fish are Blue. The scales are dark blue and the body is pale/sky blue upto the head when they turn almost white. Does any one have an idea what i have? Thanks

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi there, I think it is most likely that your Koi are either "Shusui without orange/red" see czcams.com/video/p145sIpmTd4/video.html. Or it are "Kikokuryu" without orange/yellowish colour, see czcams.com/video/CyD29tinclg/video.html . Might that be true? Maybe they have lost their colour over time

    • @readmore7180
      @readmore7180 Před 2 lety

      @AboutKoi thank you very much for getting back to be. Out of the ones you have suggested, the first link is the closest to what i have, but mine have never been red sadly, one of the small ones has a single red spot on its side about the size of the end of a AA battery, other than that they are all blue, (light blue plale body which fades to white under the lateral line and dark blue zipper) so they could well be shusui that have never developed the red. Thats the best answer ive had, so thank you

    • @Aboutkoi

      Hi there, it's difficult for me to say where to buy - I won't be doing that. But if you look into my videos, I do give a lot of advice on what kind of details you should look for, for a lot of different varieties. From the most common like Kohaku, Sanke and Showa up to more rare varieties.

    OK, how can you tell the base color? Some koi are said to have a white base with black and red markings and others have a black base with white and red markings. To me the base color always looks white.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety

      When a Showa (black based Koi) is only a week old, they are entirely black. When a Sanke (white based Koi) is only a week old, they are entirely white. You can still see the base colour in the mouth a bit and on the belly. But indeed it looks like the 'base' as you explain always look white and as of the black spots have been finished on top of the white skin later on.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety

      Hi there, there is no better one between the two. Doitsu simply is a Koi that does not have scales, or only a few scales on the lateral line usually. So essentially it are both carp / Koi. Only a different scalation

    I only have 1 Orange Ogon. It's only 3 inch in length though.
    I have the other one like that of number 1on the list but it's tail looks different. I'm not sure if its really a Koi. The Orange Ogon and that of like the number 1 get along together very well.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmm, when the tail is different, it might be a completely other fish. Or it is a so called 'Butterfly' or 'Longfin' Koi, these have longer fins and tail as the name suggests. But all the other characteristics of a Butterfly or Longfin are the same as a regular nishikigoi. Nice to hear they are doing well though!
