- Thanks for checking out our Crash Test Dummies reaction. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm is probably one of the oddest songs we've ever listened to. It's just so different.

It is about the difficulties that children face over judgements of circumstances beyond their control. This song is fire... They paint a powerful picture with surgical precise strokes. Note that they do not judge those that are ignorant, - they merely highlight the ignorance, and let the listener ponder.
Great comment 👍
@@ChiTownGirl640 🙏😄
Spot on, exellent comment.
Well said!
Nailed it Gabriel.. thanks for sharing your spin!👍
One of the biggest oddities of the 90s, but believe it or not it was a huge hit.
I know! I was a teenager when this came out and this song was like the biggest wtf mindfuck 😆
Odd stuff often becomes a hit because it stands out against the mountains of dross.
@@mnomadvfx Dross. Good word. Well put.
I'm the 90s we just wanted to hear anything that sounded original.
‘But’ It’s pretty obvious why it was huge… it’s fucking gorgeous. That outro alone makes the hair on your arms stand up.
It's about being an outcast through no fault of you own. One kid's hair turns white, one kid has birthmarks, one has "holy roller" parents. All are "weirdos" and all have no control over it.
This masterpiece IMHO is not just the lyrics but the musical composition, rithm, harmonies, etc. which are sublime
Still one of the prettiest songs ever. Just an unrated song.
This was a huge hit precisely because of its originality. The song is about difference and our different perceptions of it.
Kind of an Anti-Bully song.
This is a comment on the original video from Gress Fes
This song tells the story of three children whose strange experiences seem normal to them. Each verse is centered around one of these children, each of whom was based on someone lead singer Brad Roberts knew, or on his own personal experience. Roberts, who wrote the song, broke it down in a Songfacts interview. We'll start with the first verse, about a kid whose hair turned white after getting in an accident. Said Roberts:
"The child in the first verse, that story came from a combination of events. I was in a couple of bad car accidents when I was a little kid, so I was fascinated by them in kind of a distanced way by the time I wrote the song. But they made an impression on me.
And I had heard a story about a guy who was also in an accident, only in this case, on a boat that was in Niagara Falls. The boat was going towards the Falls, so the people could see it as closely as they could, and then it turns away. Now, you have to turn away before you get carried off over the Falls! This guy made a miscalculation, and it looked like they were going to not make it back, and he realized, 'F--k... I'm going to die!'
It turned out that the boat did not go over the edge, and he was able to get back. But his hair turned from black into bright white. His whole head. And since then - although this didn't inspire the song - I heard other cases of that happening, including my great uncle, who was dug in on an island near Japan during World War II and spent a night entrenched, listening to the Japanese crying out in their broken English what they would do to him when they caught him. And he was terrified. In his case, just a portion of his hair turned white. So anyway, that's where that came from, in the first verse.
But the idea was this kid had something that made him stand out. And of course, when you're a little kid, if you're different, it's a problem. I don't know what it's like now, but when I was a little kid, anything that made you different made you a target: a target for abuse, a target for bullying, a target for humiliation. And that's the case with the kid whose hair turned bright white."
The second verse is about a girl with "birthmarks all over her body." Said Roberts: "I actually have a birthmark at the base of my spine, which I was teased about a great deal when I was a little kid. It was a physical marking that made me different, and that made me the target of verbal abuse and teasing and bullying. So, that was really grown from an autobiographical part of my life."
The third verse is about a boy who is not physically different, but goes through an unusual religious ritual. The real inspiration was a girl, but Brad Roberts made her a boy for the lyric. He explained: "This girl that I knew, her parents were Pentecostal Christians, and they used to take her to church every week and do what they call 'speaking in tongues.' When Pentecostal Christians get together every Sunday, some of them are moved to speak spontaneously. They claim that the spirit has entered their body and what they are saying is simply a transmission of that spirit. It's not themselves speaking anymore, it is the holy word of God speaking through them. And the language that comes out, sometimes it's an ordinary language, but quite often it sounds like gibberish. For my friend, as a little child going to school, she found this terrifying, needless to say, because her parents were the people that ran her life. Every kid has those parental figures, and they seemed to lose their minds. They seemed to just become different people, and it really terrified her. It made a big mark on her, emotionally. It was a scarring experience, I would say
❤ thank you.
Excellent comment 👌🏻
Thanks man, always wondered.
What a cool bit of info, thanks!! Now when I listen I know a story most probably haven't ever heard it before
Thanks, I remember when this song came out and I never knew this. Thanks so much for this comment!
Lex's imagination is fascinating. Eddie Vedder/Johnny Cash, having a baby or if they merged their superpowers. I can totally hear what she is talking about.
They really need to start listening to some Weird Al. Its going to RULE! EDIT: How the heck have you done so many reactions but not 1 Weird Al reaction?!
Lex is straight up awesome
That was a great observation. Now I can't stop thinking about Vedder, and Cashs voice.
Nailed it! 😁
The baby's name would be Vedder Cash! Lol
This was a golden era of originality that will never be back
That whole album was so musically brilliant, it was a work of art in and of itself. I invite anyone to listen to it from start to finish. There's been nothing like it since.
I listen to it quite often, God shuffled his feet
You are definitely right about that.
Yes, one of my favorite albums ever!
It's one of my all fav albums. One of a kind.
God Shuffled His Feet is IMO the best song on the album. It’s great start to finish, but that song was brilliant
Al the stories and characters are no different from each other. Everyone is dealing with personal shit. That’s the point. It’s beautiful
It helps when you realize that the band were all philosophy majors and made this album to get them through college
Their "Superman song" is a must if you like his voice.😃🔥🍁
In the church, it sounds like they're describing Pentecostals.
Because that's exactly what it is.
I just now got this after reading the lyrics for the first time in this video. I always thought he was talking about the kid going to church and throwing up. But then I could never figure out why he threw up in church. 28 year mystery solved!
Maybe American Pentecostals, not European ones. Because I have been to numerous Pentecostal churches in Europe and they are nothing like in this song.
@@RaduRadonys Yes , it is referring to American Pentecostal . This has been confirmed. The singer has even slipped in the word "Pentecostal" into the song during live performances.
I've always thought the song was about exclusion, each of the kids has something that sets them apart from the people around them - white hair, birth marks, extreme religion.
This is the most compassionate and tender songs I know. Very moving. It takes multiple listens to fully appreciate. Genius.
Lurch: Lurching is when you move haltingly or jerkily. e.g. Frankinstein or zombies lurch. A train lurches when it moves out of the station with a sudden jerk, etc.
Or Lurch from the Addams Family?
@@keithboylan2867 Exactly!
No, that’s in English/American , the band is from Australia. In Aussie speak to lurch means to hurl or throw up.
@@martyngrifhorst6484 The band is Canadian, not Australian.
"Like Beck's grandpa" was freakin hilarious lol
You guys, don't be scared to just say sometimes "wow, this song is freaking weird" haha
This band was real big for a couple years then kind of disappeared. One of my favorites was "Afternoons and Coffee Spoons"
You guys have clearly never grown up in a religiously followed vacuum as kids. This song is powerful.
Hear, hear. 💣💥
They are not hating, they are trying to understand the meaning, first time I didn’t know what to make of it until hearing others explain
You never grown up in a satanic illuminated familly
"God Shuffled His Feet" is av great song by them too
The white hair thing is a real condition that happens sometimes with traumatic events. There was a family member of mine who went through a particularly traumatic "self-realization" (for lack of a better term) and when it was over, from that day forward, he always had bright white hair. Even though he was the youngest of the boys, when my mother cut his hair (she was a hairdresser) it would grow back white even though he used to have bright red hair.
going grey is normal, there is no condition (even shock) that can make dark hair.. grey , it was just his genetic time. even though he was youngest. I know a family of 4 brothers the 1st and 3dr have thick dark hair while the 2nd and 4th (being younger) are bald with more grey, its luck.
@@Ian-if2lf not gray, white. Canities subita also called Marie Antoinette Syndrome or Thomas More Syndrome is an alleged condition of hair turning white overnight due to stress or trauma. Although a number of cases of rapid hair greying have been documented the underlying patho-physiological changes have not been sufficiently studied. In short, we do not have enough information on it because not enough study has been done on it.
@@JMulvy there are no reported scientifically recorded episodes of what you say , its like unicorns and the yeti , a myth, what you cut and pasted actually supports my comment. so thanks.
@@Ian-if2lf Also, we have been able to hypothesize an explanation in certain mice studies. One study on mice found that stress caused white hair even if the immune system was suppressed (ruling out auto-immune response) and if the glands producing cortisol were removed. The study concluded that over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system was causing stem cells to stop producing pigment cells in hair follicles. Again, we do not have enough information to explain it in humans.
@@JMulvy Again your lack of studies supports my first point, you keep saying there is no evidence, so thanks.
The song is about the kids who were thought as odd or different. The entire album is incredible. Very interesting.
This song is different, because usually people are directly telling you what to think about something. He just lays it out, and you think about it for yourself.
He does have a message, so it's not completely random. In negative space he talks about how kids want to fit in, but we all come from slightly different circumstances, so we're not the same.
"people are directly telling you what to think about something"
That is only the case in almost ALL modern day music/film/art
This song has so much meaning. Kids come into this world and exist in all kinds of circumstances, some so different than our own. But to them, that's all they've ever known and it just is. They can't explain it. Not even the adults can explain it. Mmmm Mmmm, they may wonder sometimes, but you're a kid so you just have to live with with it, so Mmmmm Mmmm there's the acceptance of it. I really like this song.
They as in the church folk and his parents shook and lurched. (Holy spirit took over) - the boy couldn't explain. Probably thought it was ridiculous like some of us.
It describes a church that people speak in tongue.
Props to you guys for running this song. It's a masterpiece. Loved your reactions. Peace out from Oz ❤ Keep it up ✌️
I just discovered this song myself and I LOVE IT!! I can't get enough of it. I appreciate how inventive it is and the chorus is beautiful. It doesn't have to make sense. It's how it makes you feel. It isn't a tax audit.
Wow, this is a cool song. Try the superman song. Never heard a voice like this .🇨🇦. Keep it up you guy's. Liking the reactions...
Forgot this song even existed… lol
Both The Superman Song and Peter Pumpkinhead would make their heads explode.
Lol I'm pretty sure the church kid was a Pentecostal. I was ... growing up I saw some s***.....Seen a lady dance across another lady's face in high heels and didn't leave a mark! We weren't the snake handling kind, we were just the floor lurching kind. 🤣
😂😂 you guys are so great, love your takes on these songs. Lol
The blank look on Brad’s face while listening to this it’s just so funny, can I imagine what’s in his head 😂🤣
Musical concreate?
I saw an interview with Brad Roberts, the singer from Crash Test Dummies, all three of the verses were written about a certain experiences of his childhood with other true stuff mixed in. I love this song.
Hell yeah. This band rules. Try Superman's Song or Knights and Maidens.
and their cover of XTC's The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead!
I loved this song when it first came out. I thought that the kids mentioned in the song were incredibly brave.
The music video really adds to the song. Helps tell the story...definitely check it out on the side.
Oh...and 'Afternoons and Coffeespoons' is a really fun song by Crash Test Dummies 👍☺
The first kid who's hair turned white is a something he had read that when your in a traumatic event that your hair can instantly change color so he added it within the song. The second verse the singer has birth marks on his lower back so he used part of his experience but wrote it about a girl. The last verse about the church was about a friend of his that grew up in an extremely strict house and the parents would make him go to church when the singer and friends would be playing. Brad Robert's the singer came to the band with the song and no chorus. I belive he was just humming and the band said you don't need a chorus it's good like this so he continued to hum it.
Lurch
make an abrupt, unsteady, uncontrolled movement or series of movements; stagger.
"the car lurched forward"
This is part of my childhood / early youth memories sounds. I remember the video being played back then on MTV.. here in Finland. Good times 💜
Thanks for your reaction. I enjoyed your commentary.
"Once, there was this kid who... took a trip to Singapore and brought along his spray paint..."
There was a ritual for those who played in the band and hired guns (myself included) that you must see Brad's birthmark. Pulled down his draws. It was large, and apparently if it had been about a half inch over (towards the spine) he probably would have had spina bifida. Later on in the 1994 world tour, he got a bit bored with the verses and made up some different ones. The one I recall the most (maybe it was the only different one) was about a boy named Scott Bell and keeping his tonsils in a jar. Weird Al covered the song and called it Headline News, with verses about headlines at the time. He played with us twice, showing up on stage unannounced. We brought out kazoos to play the outro. He loved that, calling us good sports.
I've always loved this song. His voice is great, the musicians are great...it's just, as "quirky" as it is, it's a great song.
I was obsessed w this song in college when it came out (do the math). It's still sounds unique and def stands out. I love that the singer/song writer didn't have a chorus so he just said "Mmmmm" during the demo & the band had him keep it.
Good Eddie Vedder/Johnny Cash reference. I can hear it with this guy's deep voice
Need to see this live!!!! The entire audience is singing every word and it sounds amazing!!!
This is my default song to sing when I’ve got a sore throat. I am always very impressed. Low-key brag!
I would like to do that, but my voice is even more horrible when sore.
I remember when this would play on Much Music (Canadian version of MTV) back in the day. This song was popular when it came out. That chorus sure stays stuck in your head. If someone compares your voice to Eddie Vedder’s… it’s definitely a compliment. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️🙌🏼👏🏼👍🏼💜🇨🇦
Eddie Vedder made me love the "yarl" singing technique.
Interesting choice for an introduction to this band. I never found them to be great, but such a different style that I can enjoy them on occasion. Their debut album in 1991 had a number of good songs, my favourite being The Ghosts That Haunt Me.
omg you reacted to this, LOL. I remember this was all over the place, when it came out.
Watching Brad and Lex try to make sense of this insane song has me crying laughing so hard. The church part is about Pentecostal churches, people that get very....animated and stuff in church (I had been in them as a kid too).
With furrowed brows, "You could say that. You could say that. I appreciate it."
Y'all are phenomenal. I fully understand that some of my favorite songs are Just Plain Weird.
may sound dumb, but I honestly can’t wrap my head around the fact that so many people prefer “not weird” music 😅
Hi B&L Still loving your reactions! Lex is lovable but completely mental in a nice way! Ancient chinese proverb sums this song up "I wept because I had no shoes, Until I met a man who had no feet" All the best from across the pond Jim, Surrey, England X
I like CTDs... their songs aren't for everyone but I have several of their albums and like pretty much everything on them. They are definitely different... in both sound and content. "God Shuffled His Feet", "Afternoons and Coffeespoons", "In the Days of the Caveman", "Swimming In Your Ocean", "How Does a Duck Know?", "Two Knights and Maidens", etc.
"Lurch" is to stagger around... jerky, uncontrolled movements. Basically, the kid went to one of the churches that practiced speaking in tongues and stuff, and they say that's worse than being in a car crash, etc.
one of their later songs, Keep a lid on things, is a bit out there. still great though.
I got to see them live about 10 years ago in a small venue. One of the best shows I have seen. Brad Roberts is also hilarious so it was like a combined music and stand up comedy show.
@@maclean2440 i'm seeing them in London, next year. Playing 'God Shuffled His Feet' album for the 25 year anniversary (postponed from 2020)
Watching the video for this song would go a long way in helping you "get" it.
True. What gets me is Brad "needs" the lyrics then doesn't understand a basic word "lurch". Worse he doesn't look it up.
Hey it's been awhile . Just what I needed.
They are known as "Holy Rollers" - They dance and get WILD in church!
One of a Kind. Have always loved this song. I'm 59.
Oh my word I had forgotten about this song!! It took a few times hearing it but I grew to like it back in the day. 😆. Might have to add it to my playlist.
great song brings back memories!! ur on point..about perspective!😉
this guy's voice is insanely deep and seems to work really well for all their songs. thx for sharing Brad & Lex :)
We knew it was bound to happen. Brads brain has vapor locked. 😝
Brad finally got it. That's exactly what the song is about.
Yes but lets not ignore the low key swipe at Pentecostals, holiness, or really anyone that practices speaking in tongs and nonsense like that.
Exactly Brad finally got it. 👍😁👍
@@someoldatheist6712 Brad did acknowledged the slight at religious extremist.
"If Eddie Vedder and Johnny Cash had a baby" I literally said "Dayum!". 🤣
Lurching is like jerking around uncontrollably - this is such a quirky song😂 I love your Eddie Vedder and Jonny Cash comment about the vocal - it’s true! I bought this song when it first came out - I think the music itself and the production is so appealing and unusual.
Really deep song, a song about outsiders and the way they are judged by others for things out of their control. The chorus was only supposed to be temporary whilst they figured out proper lyrics but the band loved the “mmm mmm mmm mmm” and thought it fit the song perfectly because it didn’t overpower the stories in the verses. It wasn’t meant to sound judgemental…the exact opposite in fact.
exactly
You guys shook check out weird al’s parody of this song. It’s called “headline news”. Also another crash test dummies song that would be good to react to is Superman Song.
"You like it so far?" "I appreciate it." I think that is the only answer to this song. I was a teenager when this came out and it was hit for many of us that didn't mold.....then it was the 90s and no one actually fitted ant mold. It took me years to realise that even the popular kids struggled at school. The lack of explanation is the point, we are all different and that's ok. There doesn't need to a reason.
This was definitely a love-it-or-hate-it song when it hit the air waves and MTV.
congrats on having mmm mmm mmm mmm stuck in your head forever!
Ya made my day once again, That was kinda my reaction when I heard that the year I graduated High School in 1993!!
One of my favorite songs. Keep it up.
Brad's confused heavy sigh at 4:47 made me laugh.
Love me some 90's. This has always been one of my favs.
I remember hearing this song when it first came out on the radio in the 90s.
Wait till you hear the Superman song
This is meant to be listened to as an album. The songs are unique and interesting and flow nicely. My favorite is Swimming in Your Ocean. Great love song.
Brad Roberts, the singer, would probably like the idea that he was Eddy Vedder's & Johnny Cash's love child. ❤❤ Please react to the Crash Test Dummies other hits = Superman's Song and The Ballad of Peter Pumpkin-head.
I prefer the original PPH done by XTC in '92.
Love this song- the musical arrangement is lovely.
loved this
That whole CD is amazing! One of my favorites from back then
By the way the rest of that album is also extraordinary. Just a one of those real uncovered gems that the US hasn't heard just yet enough of. Stay safe you guys. Keep doing what you do. Love you xxx
I am sorry but this was time I can’t get back, except you guys reactions Lex Vetter & Cash comment made me laugh out loud!
It was popular as people said.
The mmm chorus was actually meant to have lyrics, but when they put what they had so far with the improvisation they were told it sounded pretty good as it was.
This song sounds better with the video for some reason.
Love your reactions, you’re the cutest.
omfg this is one of my favorite songs everrrrr
I did assembly at Welsh (UK) school every morning for 7 years. Great to sing hymns in the end. This song sounds like a hymn.
Eddie Vedder + Johnny Cash... That comment just dropped me to the floor in laughter...but you know what? That's actually very accurate
Whoosh....straight over the head!
Lmao! I almost choked on my water watchin this reaction. When this came out I was in high school and it is just as weird now as it was then…..but we liked to sing the deep Mmmm part cuz the rest was just random stories that never made any sense.
"Oh. Well. Pardon me, mr PERFECT! I guess I forgot that you never ever make make a MISTAKE!"
One Hit Wonder . Great Song as well as a eye opener with the message. I liked this song from the first time I've heard it to this day

Never listened to this without watching the video . Classic 90s vibe song.
You're on a roll with the early 90's stuff. No one else is doing this. This was a radio hit
I've loved this song ever since I heard this song in the late 90's
Those kids are brutally disciplined to the floor
This is a very conceptual and thought provoking album. Called God Shuffled his feet.
Back in the day of pioneer home stereos with 15 in subs..
My very best friend Daniel before he died would have this cranking and thumping daily.
The Bass track tone is clear and powerful.
At first I was not a fan and was like WTF is this..
Now it's one of my favorite albums ever and is pure genius.
The mixture of Brad's deep voice ..
Though a little deeper than Vedders and Cash's your description made alot of sense ..
His and the female voice is really perfect and mixed perfect on that album.
His face was probably my face for the first many playing of the this album but I'm here to tell you .
It's a masterpiece in many ways.
Good for the soul and mind and really is timeless.
It is very different but once it gets under your skin.
Your glad it did.
To this day its on any long road trip. It's a staple.
