      Except Ellen has never gotten the chance to defend herself. You've all just judged her as guilty by default and she hasn't gotten the ball yet. You can't prove she knew about or openly participated in the workplace problems, rather than someone pretending to act on her behalf, like in the MLP episode about Countess Coloratura. Furthermore, Telepictures is an aol boys' network with a history of making workplaces like this: they did so with Rosie O'Donnell's show. The problem lies with executives there, not Ellen herself.

      You all use the the Maya Angelou quote, "When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them." Well, Ellen has shown us who she is since she came out in 1997, since she spoke so movingly at the vigil for Matthew Shepard in 1998. I believe her. But you don't apply that saying to Ellen. It's exactly like how Martha Stewart was convicted in that sham trial in a kangaroo court, chosen to be the first scalp for the government over Wall Street's sins, instead of more deserving targets like Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling and Bernie Ebbers.

    As a crew member who's worked on The Idol I am SO happy this show is getting the back lash it deserves. Not only was it 17+ hour days, no lunch, toxic producers, director, talent, etc. It's just a BAD gig to work on. We wasted soooo much fucking time waiting on talent, no finish script a lot of the time, so we are just fucking shooting nonsense. Levinson has NOOOO fucking idea how to shoot on film, we rolled out constantly because he never called cut sooo fucking stupid. The AD would almost ALWAYS have to baby Levinson because he's an idiot who honestly just leans on sex to tell a story. I'm not a director but I've been lucky to work with AMAZING director and he does not give his talent the direction they NEED in order to become a character. Ugh. Take a look at the mock-up concepts and fun this show was having with their interpretation before the female creator was sacked. It’s a Britney Spears/Montana dreamboat and Depp looks like she has life in her eyes. Theres a way to make the viewers uneasy and tackle serious issues without making it seem like the weekend is just playing out some kind of fantasy of his which is what this feels like. Is just him and sam playing out some kind of fantasy. Maybe if they played it like his character was good at manipulating people, i could believe that and understand that and the message, but instead they just brought DOWN depp’s character. I dont know a single woman in my life that would like “rapey” vibes or even say “yeah i kinda like that about him” and then proceed to invite said person over when their friend explicitly said they thought that about that person and clearly are uncomfortable with said person. It all just feels so fucking gross.

    As an SA survivor, I literally cannot watch it without triggers. It’s disgusting how women are continually put through trauma porn in media, just like “Blonde.” It’s hard to explain the slimy feeling you get watching something like The Idol if you haven’t been through abuse, but it’s very real and it’s very gross. Personally I’m asking my friends not to support the show. Success for something of this nature leads to further exploitation of women, our bodies, and men treating us how they see in media.
    Edit: A lot of people have taken this to mean I don’t think triggers should be put in media. That wasn’t my point. There is really good media I don’t watch because of SA content, like Outlander, which does a good job of approaching trauma empathetically and showing it’s effects. But it’s how you execute it. You can approach subject matter like this with ethical intentions, like the show’s original direction when it had a female director. But unfortunately that’s not what ended up happening.

    What sucks even more is that when people from the kpop community criticizes the show for oversexualizing the woman characters, the awful script, and how problematic Sam Levinson is, blackpink fans would come to the defense and tell you that "it's Hollywood, what do you expect?!" as if that excuses the problems with this show. I observe this as them immediately thinking that people are attacking Ms. Jennie, instead of pausing and thinking that maybe people are criticizing the show for more sane reasons, like treating the women characters as sex objects.

      Unfortunately, some of the fandom might see it as "This is one of Jennie's chances to shine as an actress, and you're attacking that chance by calling it bad," which will get them defensive.
      The rate at which mob opinion spreads and narratives become "truths" only weakens any chance of combating that.

I thought it would be interesting to see a show explore how a charismatic leader pursues vulnerable people to create their cult and how it could even happen to celebrities in the public eye. It’s a shame that the show’s production became an environment for the abuse of power when that’s what the show’s narrative could have discussed.

      I thought that too. It gave me the biggest ick. Like he didnt even defend it besides saying it was meant to be provocative. He could've said "it is provocative, but it's also about the self destructive of egos and the importance of very needed conversation of the exploitation of artists, musicians, models, actors, etc., especially the young ones, who need to be used for their contribution to the arts, and not just used for their attractiveness." But, honestly, he would just be lying because he knows damn well the steaming pile of poop they made, and that it's just shock value with no substance, boring and overexaggerted characters that exist within a gross fantasy landscape.

      The original director had the far better idea, in my opinion. In order for you to care about characters like this (vapid, filthy rich, dubiously talented), there needs to be some exposition on character background. Ok, we know her mom died and she likes to wear skimpy clothes. But that's it. We know nothing else about her. There's no character development. The original director sounded like she wanted to tell more of the story from Joslyn's point of view and really dig into the motivations of the character, rather than focus on long, lingering shots of Jos's naked/near naked body.

    • @BloodofaFool
      @BloodofaFool Před 11 měsíci +97

      @JKyall yes that's what it sounds like. That's probably why Jennie signed on. I heard it was basically a story of one of these kpop stars(or any new female stars) up and coming struggles without doing a reality show. It just sounds like The Weekend wanted a show for a character he probably has always wanted to play, maybe a inner dark person of himself, and didn't want anyone to get in the way of that priority
