  • History of Korea
The Korean Empire existed from 1897 to 1910 and underwent significant social reform and modernization. However, it became a Japanese colony in 1910 until 1945. Korean resistance against Japanese rule was seen through the March 1st Movement of 1919, and subsequent resistance movements were active in Manchuria, China, and Siberia. After World War II, the Allies divided Korea into North and South, with the Republic of Korea supported by the US and Western Europe in the south, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea supported by the Soviets and China in the north. In 1950, North Korea, led by Kim Il Sung, initiated the Korean War to reunify the country under Communist rule.
