  • Of all the races I’ve ever run, Sunday’s NYC Half will be a first I’ve gone into TOTALLY unprepared. What held me back during this training cycle? It's not something I'm proud of but maybe you relate?

    I say to other runners - "don't put running in a box and put a label on it" allow it to change as you do. Running for running's sake is very good for you. Keep doing what ever you like on the channel my man! Enjoy the race and soak in the atmosphere. Perhaps even consider a walk/run method right from the start so you don't blow up and DNF?

      Great advice. I've gone through periods where i could only manage running 1-2 days a week for a few miles due to a hectic life or health issues to training like my life depended on it. I was a runner through it all. And i love the running community. (Almost) everyone is incredibly welcoming

    Greetings from London, England. Thanks for this message, it summed up where I was a year ago. I came off Strava, ditched the Garmin, scaled it all back and had a fallow year. Yes, I’ve put on a little weight, yes I’ve lost condition, but my head is in a better place and the work/life balance is more…balanced. I’m now looking forward to a couple of small, local races later this year and have added a little swimming to my routine. Thanks again, and guess what; I stumbled across you via Ben Parkes and Kofuzi!

    Great post. I’m 64 and not an elite I was firmly in the middle of the pack but in October of 2021 I had open heart surgery and couldn’t run. I had to start by walking 1st. Even now I can only run about 20 minutes with out a walk break. I may be slower but now that I’m training for a 1/2 marathon I still can’t wait to get out there.

    A HUGE part of why I've been able to keep running for almost 4 years now, having repeatedly quit after much shorter bouts of running in the past, was that I decided to own my running. Not needing to train when you don't feel like it is an example of owning your running instead of feeling obligated to do it somebody else's way.

    First: the game cart references absolutely snagged me.
    Second: I absolutely relate. Just finished my 20 mile training run in prep for my first marathon ever, and frankly training has felt like a part time job ontop of my regular job and my responsibilities to my family. So that fatigue is real. And despite loving running more now than I have in the past I am very ready to just sort of let those boundaries go abit and not bloody worry about if my heart rate is in the right place and just run for the heck of it again for awhile.

    I think nobody talks about that process also when you are tired but it happens right at the beginning of a race or event when you are just in the first 200-500 meters and you have this overwhelming feeling of, just walking or stopping. That's when you really need to take a good solid look inside yourself and change gears into some mental health and forgiveness for yourself and nobody else.

Take your cell phone with you and take pictures of flowers, public art, interesting landscapes, critters, or whatever else catches your fancy, treating it as your time to explore. Thanks for sharing! I ran into a similar situation about 2 years ago, I was knocking out my daily runs and competing in 10+ events per year but I got burnt out and eventually unmotivated. At first I couldn’t figure out what was going on, and I just stopped running for about 8 months. The love of running stilled remained and every time I drove pass a runner I would feel as if a part of me was missing. I came to the realization that my drive to run was fueled by the need to maintain the image of a successful runner. I has lost my passion for running because I was too focused on PBs and forgot to have fun. Now, I no longer time my runs, I just go out to have a good time; I do not run every day, but I use the off days to focus on strength straining. I find myself in a better place and I’m much happier as a runner; I hope you can reignite your passion for running. All the best!

    Hi Kori, I can totally understand what you've been going through. The body and mind need some rest now and then. So this is one way to find your piece of the puzzle and to discover where your balance is, especially if you have a demanding full time job as well. I went through a lot of shitty periods myself as we all do, but now I think I am the right path that I can prolong for, well, I hope a lifetime. I am 44 now and I don't run more than 3 times a week. I did more in the past but I got injured all the time and it was demotivating. I never was able to run in races beyond 10k. From spring to fall I do a little bit of weight training as well, 2 x a week when I don't run that day. That is more than enough for me to keep me in excellent shape. Once in a few weeks I take a full week off to recuperate. This way I can keep on going without losing any motivation or getting myself too tired. At least for now, we're getting older every day... 😉

    I can relate in the sense that over the years running has waxed and waned in importance due to other life events. I started running in 1979 and really trained pretty hard until 1985 when our daughter was born. Kept running through that but hugely scaled back the mileage and focus. Now I am 66 and run 2-3 times per week. Stopped racing in 2013 and really do not miss it at all. Never say never- maybe I will race again some day. Through it all I still love running and taking the very long view has been important. Sounds like you are on a similar track Kori, and that is a good thing.

    So on point! I suffered a minor injury and when it wasn't improving decided to stop running for a bit in November. At first it was difficult, but I'm about to start training for a marathon, and while I know I took a step back in my endurance capacity, I'm so looking forward to the structured training and "coming back!" And sometimes continually training for events starts to feel too much like something you have to do, drudgery, so take a break and run simply for the enjoyment of running for a bit. Life is all about balance, right? Run on ...

It's tough getting out there especially in NYC in the winter and I think your point about wanting to train again is totally spot on -- sometimes you just need that reset to fully appreciate it. Also, while I think Ed's comment could have been phrased better and I've personally enjoyed your interviews, I do agree with him that it's nice hearing an update on your own individual running journey, even if that update is that there isn't really an update. I think you should take pride in having developed the ability to identify when training brings you joy and then scaling back when it doesn't. Hey Kori - I never, ever leave a comment on CZcams videos, but I know you read these. Comments regarding having 'guests' on your channel probably come from the fact that just like me, I presume a lot of average, every man runners view your channel as we can all relate to a similar journey. Sounds like Ed just wasn't on the ball with articulating this properly. Big CZcams names help grow engagement with your channel too - which can only be a good thing.
    Secondly, I actually think it's great you didn't feel like running. Most training cycles for any sport are periodical, and you can't go again unless you take time to recharge the battery. Most people actually struggle with this and a lack of purpose after having such a big goal for a long time. My foot was still sore but there were no more sharp pains. So, I went on an easy pace 5k. The next morning, sharp pain. This time the pain lingered and lingered. My wife told me to stop being stubborn and go go the podiatrist. I went yesterday and was diagnosed with extensor tendonitis. Lovely. The N64 reference was awesome dude! I tried to run 3 marathons last year, each one ending with a fizzled out finish. So I took 3 months off, and started again in January - now my mindset is right, and I've come into it with the right discipline to run slow to get fast, and just overall run a LOT. I have a marathon in April, but that one is for fun, and the real goal race is in the fall. If I finish strong in April, I know I can fly past my goal in the fall if I stay healthy.

    Amen!! I've enjoyed hitting the new PBs lately, but you know ... I was burning myself out on training! You know, it taxes mentally as much as physically. The training I did for San Antonio was 16 weeks, took a week off, then jumped into another 10+ week training block for the Half Marathon I did at the end of February. Was definitely ready for a cartridge pull out, blow 🌬️ the bottom, and plug back in!
    I've made a work out schedule that will get me through the spring and most of the summer, but I'm taking a break from training runs 5 days a week. Resetting, refreshing ... Do other activities that give me some joy in my life. Come back ready to roll around the beginning of August. Then it'll be time to focus on the training for my first full marathon at the Houston Marathon in January 2024.
    So, enjoy your race bud! Regardless of how you feel, get in the slower pace group this time! Enjoy the first half, and if you want to stretch out a little, then do it after the half way point or the 9 mile point. But not before. Your body will thank you later. 🙂👍 Be careful and have fun! 🏃

    Jack Daniels recommends taking dedicated time off from running - ALL running, not just training! - for all runners, who have committed to the sport. From a week or two (every now and then) all the way up to a month or even two (once every year or two). Just to go do other things in life. Before getting back to it, as we always do! This “reset” is probably exactly what he had in mind. 🙂

      Interesting. I've never heard that. The only time I ever currently take off running 100% is the week following a race. This is something I'm going to think about. Thanks!

    I have a full marathon in 2 days that I did not train for either. After I got my 1st and 2nd full marathons out of the way, I became lazy and just started eating and drinking whatever I want. But hey, I'm just gonna take it easy and aim to finish. Who cares what time I get! I can always train for the next one :)

    I think people make comment like that are too quick to judge. I think interviewing others that inspire you to get into running & vlogging about it displays how you were inspired to do so in a way. I like them. For the training that is great. Maybe it was you listening to your body. They is a cooler half the Brooklyn half marathon and the SI half before NYC to test your training on. For the NYC I take it as a supported training run.

    This video is spot on. But what about the flip side: stuck in a training cycle where you can only do certain types of runs but you want it to end so you can do whatever sort of running you want to - long trail runs, a short quick run, hill repeats etc.

  • @TolunayOrkun
    @TolunayOrkun Před rokem

    Hey Kori. I get you, sometimes finding the motivation to do the training is hard (especially the way the weather is in NY in winter) and it seems like you are ready to start training again. Great! There is no shame in that.
    Just be careful with your loading. It is so easy to overtrain and get injured. I am telling you because I personally got injured twice in the last 6 months doing speed workouts on track (last November left hip and February right hip). I am still nursing the second one with 8 days left for my coming Cherry Blossom 5k and 10 mile races in DC. Apparently, my body couldn't handle the pounding at high speed plus additional torque forces while taking the curves on the track. I had fractured my pelvic bone during the workout according to the MRI. Anyway, I think I will be able to complete my races. Last week, I ran a slow HM using 1mi run/400m walk strategy.
    Be sure to give itself good recovery after stressful workouts. For my next race training, I am actually planning to try a 10-day training cycle instead of usual 7-days and extend the number of weeks of the plan. That way, I can schedule more recovery runs/cross training/rest days etc. after stressful speed workouts and really long runs.

    The moment you start to lose the joy in running is when it's a sign of fatigue. Your video update couldn't come at a better timing as I am experiencing fatigue, low energy, from peak training (something I have learned to take notice). I do feel guilty for taking a day or two off but I know my body needs it. I too know I'll bounce back! It's great to hear that after a break, your energy and enthusiasm for training again has surged back!
    I'll be running this Sunday's NYC Half as well. Good luck, fellow runner!

    100% hear that! I “trained” for 22 weeks for the Mesa Marathon in Arizona, attempting to qualify for Boston. I didn’t miss a workout or run for the entire training block but for numerous reasons ended up with a 3:58 marathon in Mesa my worst marathon yet! Since then I’ve been running to prepare for London in April but have completely lost my mojo…. Still getting in KM’s but not “training” - still looking forward to my forth world major but I get the “training fatigue” feeling, I too and living it right now 😂

    Kori, you have great content! This video hits close to home. There has been days when I'm all dressed to go out for a run and 30 minutes would pass by of me trying to talk myself out of doing it. I then think of all the calories I consumed for this run LOL. On a side note, I thought I had subscribed a long time ago! I remember when you were in Chicago! Kori & Corey (McPherrin) occasionally. Also, I always thought had great rapport with Lauren S. the business analyst.

  • @justanoldfashionedrunner605

    yes i totally get it....nothing could be further apart from each other than running and training. As you know, i stopped training decades ago, and to be honest, i don`t miss it at all. I do miss the occasional race, i did a few time trials, but i miss the magic of getting high on the magic mixture of adrenaline and endorphin, which i just cannot duplicate in a time trial.....so i confess i might do a race or two in the future.......but as you probably guess i will be unprepared, i will be just running with a bib together with a bunch of other people.......oh yes another change i made at the beginning of the year, i do almost all runs without a stopwatch. I do some intervals and tempo runs to get the blood flowing and runs on unknown routes still with a stopwatch thou.......and i write down the miles i did.......not ready to do the final step into a world of running free......no pressure on my side, if it comes it comes, if not i will be still happy.....as long as i just run

    To me at least, this is common knowledge. This doesn't only apply to running, it applies to everything. Your mind is your enemy and you have to work on diciplining it. Everyone feels like they don't want to get up for work, workout, etc sometimes.

    If you’ve been running EVERYDAY during training I can confidently say YOU WERE BURNT OUT. Even the pros take at least 1 day off and they nap 2 or 3 hrs after getting 8 or 9 hrs of sleep at night. At your age there is no way you can RECOVER from your training runs running everyday in order to stay fresh. You shouldn’t run anymore than 4 times a week to recover properly. MAY I SUGGEST A RUNNING COACH ?

    • @KoriRuns
      @KoriRuns  Před rokem

      To be clear I wasn't running everyday during training. I was running "almost everyday" while I haven't been training. We're talking a couple miles as part of my commute. I've certainly considered a running coach but for me the joy in this process is trying different thing, making mistakes and learning from them.

    Being a content creator is hard enough. Running takes a lot of time and effort.. Filming and editing takes time and effort. If you want to mix it up and do other things that also increase your subscriber count AND re-invigorate you along the way, that makes you adaptable and more importantly successful.. To me at least. Your content is unique. I'd like to see you interview all the runners.
