This Is What a $3000 3rd Gen 4Runner Looks Like

  • A couple years ago, I sold my 2002 4Runner SR5 and I regretted it almost immediately. Ever since then, I've been searching for an inexpensive replacement, preferably with a factory e-locker. After MONTHS of searching, I finally found a deal. I'm extremely excited for this one, guys. The first video on this channel is an overview of the condition of the 4runner and my game plan for the future.
    Phase 1: Urgent Repairs
    - Engine is running rough. Definitely has a misfire.
    - Brakes are completely shot. Not safe to drive.
    - Turns out the check engine bulb is out. With a truck this old and this rough, the check engine light is a must have.
    Phase 2: Deep Clean
    - First of all, this thing STINKS. And there are pubes everywhere.
    - I think it's important to do the first detail yourself if you're buying an older vehicle like this one. It gives you the opportunity to go over every inch inside and out so you are aware of all the problem areas that need to be addressed.
    - The frame isn't bad but it needs some work. A little elbow grease and Eastwood Rust Encapsulator should do the trick.
    Phase 3: Maintenance Baseline
    - This truck is old and it has 270,000 miles. It needs a timing belt and water pump. All fluids need to be replaced including brake fluid, oil (and filter), differential fluid, transfer case fluid, transmission fluid, the whole 9.
    - I'll take a look at other problem areas including ball joints, driveshaft u-joints, CV axles, etc.
    - The exhaust is trash. It's been frankensteined together and it needs to be replaced. It sounds terrible, smells awful. It's gotta go.
    Phase 4: Cosmetics
    - I want this truck to function as close to new as possible, but I don't want to ignore looks and comfort.
    - The front bumper needs to be swapped out for something color matched, or possibly an aftermarket option if the opportunity presents itself (yay Facebook marketplace)
    - The front seats are in rough condition and my butt sinks to the floor
    - All the door seals are torn apart and need to be replaced
    - The paint is ROUGH and it's impossible to miss. I think I can manage a DIY paint correction.
    - There are a lot of little things that I think can be easily addressed with a couple trips to the junk yard.
    - New rocker panels need to be welded in place and the old rusted ones need to be cut out.
    Phase 5: Upgrades
    - LEDs are a big one (might do that when I replace the check engine light)
    - New suspension means a lift.
    - A lift means bigger tires.
    - Tundra brake upgrade for more stopping power to account for the added weight of all the overlanding goodies.
    - Head unit and speakers are originals. They need to goooo! It'll make a huge difference during the many hours on the highway before you get to the trailhead.
There is a TON more that I didn't list here. Subscribe to follow the build!

Rear locker only engages in 4-Lo below 5mph ... until you do the blue wire mod.

@@Axel_Explores I was so disappointed when I first tried and it didn’t lock but I messed with it and it fricken works! So glad I don’t have to spend 600 bucks on a new actuator.

I don't think you'll find a 3rd generation 4Runner for $3000. They typically go for more than that. Good luck with your search!

Ngl bro that rust is not good. Only gonna grow and then your floor pans are gonna be gone. I’d shine this up and sell it for 10k and find a cleaner one.

Honestly, I considered doing exactly that but I took it to a shop for a more in depth look and I’m gonna be able to cut out the rusty rocker panels and weld in new ones. Not the most fun project, but like you said, if I don’t address it soon, it’ll spread to the floor pans.

10k?! More like 3-6k. Wouldn’t pay anymore considering its condition.

@@elonsus9747 you must not know the 4runner market. 10k is cheap for these. If it’s 4x4 and has a clean body. If you want this same rig rust free it’s 15k

@@ifixtruckz I just feel bad for the people who over pay for them. I’ve seen a FJ cruiser go for 80k plus on bring a trailer. Outrages. Had a 02’ until it was totaled. Now have a 14’. The Toyota tax is real. But 10k for this particular 4Runner eh no. For a rust free and not a lot of miles sure 10-20k.

@@elonsus9747 I’m a 4runner fanatic. I just paid 8500 for a green 190k 96 5 speed 4x4 3.4l. Leather tan interior. Very hard spec to find. Been looking for a long time. Just sold a 99 white auto 4x4 cloth with 190k for 10k. Two reasonable comparisons. Both very clean and rust free. No body damage or mechanical damage.
