X2 Review, Six Flags Magic Mountain Arrow Dynamics 4th Dimension Coaster | The Original 4D Coaster

  • X2 is the original 4th dimension coaster. Designed by Alan Schilke and built by Arrow Dynamics, this massive coaster features seats that can invert. This ambitious ride is one of the most intense coasters in the world, but it's exorbitant price tag bankrupted Arrow. At least Arrow went out with a bang!

X2 looks amazing! I go to California (San Francisco bay area, to be exact) every year and I often road trip down to LA, sometimes even Las Vegas through Death Valley, that place is just so beautiful.. I always see this thing in the distance when I'm on the I5. It just catches my eye, it's really incredible. I'm planning my next trip where I drive down to LA so hopefully I get to conquer this absolute beast!

This might be my all-time favourite ride. I can understand people's issue with the bumpiness but it's never really bothered me. I loved it when it was just X but after its face lift to X2 its pretty much unbeatable until another 4D coaster is built. Sadly I don't get don't to California nearly as often anymore (even pre-covid) so I haven't been able to ride this in a few years but I still come and watch POV videos every now and then so I don't forget how awesome it is. I'm even contemplating getting it as a tattoo.

For me is 10/10 after yesterday visit. I tried outside seat on back row after a long time and it was something out this planet. Also flames where on so it gave me a feeling that my face is already burned. This is the only ride that freaks me out before.

I barely even notice any bumpiness, even when I've done outside seats. This is so unique from the other 499 coasters I've ridden, and I love the extreme intensity and insanity. I've ridden it on school days plus Football Fest Sunday. Very little or no waits, allowed to go right back into the station after getting off.

I happened to go on a slow day and asked the attendant if I could go again since no one was waiting in line. I still remember the look on his face like "are you sure?!". Great video. I love this ride, definitely re-rideable if riding an inside seat. When I want to go extreme outside side back row is just insane. If I am not mistaken they could theoretically run 3 trains and did when it first opened as X however one is almost always offsite getting refurbished at S&S. The separate feature of unload and loading stations was a feature when the ride first opened and have cut it most likely due to staffing issues. Also I thought they rebuilt/redesigned the trains and made them lighter and not completely replaced them with new ones. Wish the sound system worked still and I am very happy covid fixed the mandatory locker situation.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Před 2 lety

That's understandable a yearround park is refurbing trains, especially in the off-season. I always take the inside seat it possible.

  • @TonyKimtheamusementparkfan

When this opened in 2001, there was nothing like X2. I mean just imagining the concept of a 4th dimensional coaster was unheard of back in those days, and I still think it holds up. I can understand why people may not like it, and this was a prototype coaster, so obviously, S&S learned from the original Arrow design and took it to the next level. Alan Schilke was just nuts when he thought to be able to come up with this concept. Arrow Dynamics really were the coaster manufacturer to go to back in the day, and X2 is an example of why Arrow was so innovative back in their prime. X2 was so ahead of its time, and I still think it is to this day. It still looks very modern. The only problem is that this ride completely bankrupted Arrow Dynamics in 2002, since $46 million was insane back then for a coaster, but they ended with a bang with a worthy final sendoff. It was a risk worth taking, and I think Alan Schilke should be proud of his work, not only for X2, but for the time he worked at Arrow Dynamics. It's nice to see S&S Worldwide still able to maintain the ride with spare parts to provide, as it's over 20 years old now, so let's hope X2 will stay around for another 20 :)

@@CanobieCoaster I think they could still be around if they had implemented computerized track design from the start. Arrow were too optimistic and had stuck to their obsolete design practices, and B&M and Intamin beat them to the punch with smoother, more groundbreaking designs. Had Arrow done this maybe at the start of the 1990s and not later into that decade, I think they could have still been a major player in today’s industry.

I rode this yesterday as my 150th credit. I was on an outside seat in the 5th car, and my brother took the inside. This coaster feels like ut shouldn't exist. I was left in awe and laughing at the final brakes.
I rode this today in the back, again, on an outside seat, and I was not prepared for how different just 2 rows would be. The back row on this thing is surreal. This ride is pure chaos, and I love it. I wasn't able to get an inside seat ride, but I almost think I'd like it more on the outside either way as it seems to add to the out-of-control nature of the coaster. I didn't expect to like X2 as much as I did, but it might have dethroned Fury 325 as my new number 1.

But the stairs side also puts you on the outside of the turn around and on the higher portion of the twisted camelback before the flames. Been my favorite coaster ever since I first rode it over 10 years ago despite riding Steel Vengeance, El Toro, Voyage, and Skyrush this year. All great rides and worthy #1s but there’s just something special about the insanity that is X2.

We made a mad dash for it as soon as we got in the park, but even so the line was at 4 hours. I ended up coming back later and waiting two hours for a single ride, and the experience was so chaotic that my brain was barely able to process it. A big reason why I already have a trip to LA planned for April.

For me X2 is slightly the best ride at SFMM. I used to prefer Twisted Colossus, but over time that has changed. I prefer the stair side for a few reasons. First the ramp side is also the side where the fast lane comes up so it moves slower. Also on hot summer days you will be in the sun on the ramp side but that isn't the case on the stair side. I also prefer the stair side for the ride experience. I feel the second raven turn is a little better on the stair side. The stair side is just the overall more enjoyable experience. I really only ride X2 in the very front or very back. I'm glad that I have this coaster at my home park!

You already know that of the 97 coasters I've ridden that actually use gravity to power at least some (if not most) of the train's ability to complete the layout that X2 comes in at #8 for me. I rode it four times in total and all four times in the back car; car 8 on both sides, the inside right (the far side as guest enter the station that is only accessible by going through a tunnel under the tracks in the station; the part you call the left side. Unless I misunderstood you: the confusion between right and left is because you're facing backwards once in any seat of X2) totalling twice; one on the inside and one on the outside. On the left (the near side as guest enter the station; the part YOU call the right side) I also rode twice, both times on what I'd just learned was the rougher outside seat. That last time I rode it I was hoping to sit on the inside, but due to a request from some poor guy on crutches who asked me if he could sit on the inside instead of me; I was only a human being to oblige; lest I be an asshole. Poor guy was on crutches and wanted to ride X2 in the back car! He probably didn't have a fast pass either, so I couldn't help it: I gave him the inside seat.
The only hazard with this ride is the calf muscles in the back of the calf part of the legs, which can get violently slammed into the front lip of the seat, which can be avoided if guests remember to extend their legs so that their calfs and thighs form a straight line to avoid calf banging whilst riding X2.
As for the ride experience: I couldn't really make sense of it during the drop, (possibly due to the shock of experiencing the drop of this ride in the back; with the trick hill already having gotten me going before dropping it's full drop and reaching it's top speed, but not before flipping me onto my face DURING its biggest drop and reaching its maximum speed) but I definitely noticed on the camelback before the last raven turn that I actually felt the tummy tickling sensation of airtime during that relatively small turn in the ride; the sensation all to easy to grow a tolerance to, especially with so many relatively new coaster credits at the time. That element as well as the "weakest part of the ride;" (the drop after the half way turn around drop that preceded that camel back)
Those elements alone made me KNOW that the coaster was elite, even if the better elements (after four rides in the back car) left me too shocked to be able to properly critique. However: I hope that nobody gets offended that the back seats of X2 is a coaster riding experience I place at only 8th place, especially considering I've only ridden 97 coasters that actually use gravity, but believe me: X2 is still an elite coaster in my books. For me: worse than being a little rough on the outside seats, X2 doesn't have a long enough duration, especially for its long wait. But if I've ridden 97coasters that use gravity (including tiny kiddie coasters like clones of "lil Phantom") and rank X2 my 8th favourite; Do you think I'm being too hard on X2? Please reply in the reply section.

I agree right/left can be confusing on this one. I used the queue line when the main line splits left (ramp) and right (tunnel/stairs). The ride really is amazing as long as you don't slam your calves too hard.

The fact that your seats flip while going 70 mph down a bear vertical drop then into a crazy 3d layout but flipping like a free spin. This makes me sad Arrow is out of business but they couldn't have made a better last coaster. The insanely + intensity + seats flipping + adrenaline = unlike anything else. i like how people always point out how its the first 4th dimension coaster, but it does SO MUCH MORE
it was the first wing coaster
it was the first coaster that could invert seperately from the track
its the best hyper at MM
so much its done for the park
also im a type A person

S&S will build them as they have built 2 and do all the servicing of X2s trains. It's a cost thing $45+ million for a ride is cost prohibitive for most parks as a B&M Giga runs only $30 million and probably less of a maintenance cost too.

this ride might just be the only ride i'm genuinely scarred of and I don't know why. I know I will enjoy it but for some reason every time I go I miss out on it. its bizarre for me because I love coasters and I sucks to constantly miss out on one because your "afraid". Im not afraid of the ride its self per say but how I will fell on the ride, when I first went on tatsu I had this horrible felling all the way up until the pretzel loop as I had constantly heard this is one of the most intense elements ever conceived, for some reason that stuck in my head and I had this awful felling of short breath and extremely fast heart beat. this is probably normal but its the only coaster this has happened to me on and I dont want to experience it again it was so uncomfortable and zapped all enjoyment I would have had of the ride. but once I actually got to the pretzel loop I realized I was totally fine and actually loved the element. i'm worried this same felling will happen again on X2 as I have always heard its the most intense ride ever and unlike anything I have ever ridden. I know once I ride It I will be fine, but I dont want to have that felling again, any advise. its probably odd to here an enthusiast who is genuinely worried about a coaster and even I cant believe I am. I told myself I would ride it the next time I go. I just hope I dont get so in my head this time.

I’ve only ridden this once back in 2018, front row, inside seat. Such a miserable experience. Roughest steel coaster I’ve ever ridden, and it’s in my bottom 3 coasters out of 208. Easily my least favorite coaster in the park

1 train on X2 is a disgrace. This ride has disney level demand, on my one & only visit to Six Flags MM it was consistently a 2-3 hour wait the whole day. Not only should they be running all trains, they should be utilizing the unload platform. Only at Six Flags.
