My Dad saw it at the drive-in in Adelaide, South Australia in 1977 aged 9, and I think no matter how much he downplays Star Wars now it was a blast for him. In fact we've known they were coming since 1981 when Star Wars became ANH, with the promise of even more changes when (in Lucas' own words) "technology has a chance to catch up". But perhaps Lucas' biggest mistake was not so much the changes he made, some of which were terrible, but rather his insistence on not allowing the fans to choose the movies they wanted.

Hate to say it...but I feel once Lucas passes on, Disney will release these through Criterion and we will finally get the original versions again which we have all waited for since the birth of dvd in 1997. But by then, the bootlegs will have gotten much better. I am curious what Disney plans for the 50th anniversary in 4 years!
