  • I end up having a blown head gasket on a car I have, i ended up resurfacing the cylinder head at home to both save time and money rather than bringing to a machine shop and having to wait up to 2 weeks before i get it, and i figured someone out there would like to see it being done at home in the backyard.

    For taking off the exhaust manifold just heat them enough with a propane torch so the heat can expand the screw and get it to loosen easier

    Good idea only thing that would be better is making the sanding surface bigger so the head can be turned sideways to get a cross hatch pattern an help get a more uniform flat surface.

      I get that. But had to work with what I had. And I was making sure I was turning it side to side to make sure it was getting a cross hatch. May of not looked like it but I was turning it as I was going to

    Nothing like some little elbow grease.

    Take an old treadmill an electric one, get you a thick piece of flat steel the same length of the treadmill run your belt that you get made over the top of the steel and run a hose pipe over it or a garden hose with water and maybe put a little soap in it. You could use a parts washer pump and recycle the water if you wanted too it works great. just do not get carried away and cut way too much off of a head you need to mic it first.
    Whatever it is, you are resurfacing just make sure you do not cut too much off of it because it will do it really quick and that also depends on what grit sandpaper you are using.

      Didn’t know this existed until I stepped on the tool truck. One of the best things I found out about.

    Hello from Oamaru Sth island New Zealand.
    Do you advise to dress head gasket with Hylomar spray on prior to installation?.
    I'm replacing a gasket on my 2012 Nissan Navara D40 St-X Diesel common rail turbo engine

      @bobirving6052 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I didn’t hear if hylomar here. We don’t have Nissan diesels either.
      We do have copper spray gasket which is good on MLS (steel) head gaskets.

    This will work if you are in an apocalypse type scenario if every machine shop in the world ceased to exist

      Why pay 200-500 a head when you can do it at home for 25 to 50 dollars be realistic sometimes people don't have that kinda money

    Spoko, Kolejnym razem zanim zaczniesz to pomaluj powierzchnię czarnym nie zmywalnym markerem, będzie widać górki i dołki gdzie zbiera a gdzie jeszcze nie.

    What grit did you finish with? 80 is too course for finished product

    • @thatguysgarage323
      @thatguysgarage323  Před 10 měsíci +2

      120 grit

    • @conmanumber1

      Why not 800 to 1000?.

      @@conmanumber1 It's important not to leave a mirror finish, the surface that 120 or 200 grit sand paper leaves actually helps "bite" the gasket:

      I did 80 grit and then when it got closer I used 120 to finish it up

    How do you ensure that the surface where you put the sandpaper is perfectly flat? Because if not, I think the whole thing is meaningless.

      The fact that it works every time should be enough proof. Probably even better than theories about checking flatness.
