A guide to unlock the new content in Joyful!
1.) Defeat all of the warlords on The List without using Joy.
2.) Go to the fence left of The List, and enter into a secret passage. Go behind yet another fence to find another secret area - go to the flower in this area, and open your menu.
3.) Destroy the statues in this order: Sticky, Buzzo, Rando, Brad, Marty, Yado, The Mother's (on both sides), Lisa.
    4.) Gather nine items:
Blue Key: Obtained by interacting with all of the rocks in Big Lincoln's area, and then entering a secret passageway in the wall of the room he is encountered in.
Stitches: Obtained by interacting with the corpse found at the end of Dice Mahone's area several times.
Ceremonial Sword: Obtained by jumping left immediately after entering Mr. Beautiful's area and opening the locked doorway with the Blue Key.
Incomplete Hand: Obtained by using the Ceremonial Sword on the middle finger statue.
Goldfish: Obtained by waiting in the first room of Lardy Hernandez's area.
Tiny Picture: Obtained in the area located behind the fence left of The List.
Garden Gloves: Obtained in the area where one finds the flower to enter the statue area.
Clean Water: Obtained by using the Warlord Skill "Supply Chain" in battle at random. If you've defeated all of the named enemies, an infinite random encounter with a Shadowy Figure can be found in the area that the Tiny Picture is located.
Ipecac: Obtained by talking to Larry Stintz whilst wearing the Hint Mask.
5.) Place these items on the statues in this order: Garden Gloves, Clean Water, Blue Key, Stiches, Ipecac, Sheath, Goldfish, Tiny Picture, Incomplete Hand.
6.) Go to The List - there will be a door. Complete this section to obtain the Nipple.
7.) Go to Green's House and obtain the Joy Mask. Use the Joy Mask to enter the Joy Lab, where you will find Lisa's coffin. Go to the left of the coffin, into the wall.
    8. Finish the game as normal.
Thank you to Marmo for collecting much of this information!

@@quinnholloway5400 It's pretty telling he's the only one who "moves on", so to speak. I think the whole sequence gives an idea that these characters are held back by their regrets from their actions in life, and they're in Purgatory state because of it. Unless I'm mistaken, Rando's the only one who makes genuine amends by acknowledging his mistakes, apologizing to Buddy, and giving her the feedback she needs to let her "open mind" grow. Him disappearing after this conversation seems to indicate he's the only one of the cast to actually find peace in death, and it's done by him helping bring a measure of peace to Buddy (and Lisa, by extension).

Sticky regretted it, and Rick didn't- even though Rick was the one who tried to get Sticky spared, and Sticky tries to kill you again if you spare them. I imagine the "selling her out" was them telling someone who wasn't trustworthy where she was. Possibly a rando- the kind without the capital R. And the reason Sticky regrets it is the same reason he tries to kill you- he feels guilty and is trying to atone, like Brad is.

The funny thing about weeds is that they tell you what the soil is lacking. Deep compacted soil can grow dandelions very easily aerated soil does not. Grass that invades your garden can be suppressed with enough shade from established plants, or a layer of mulch to prevent them from getting to the surface to begin with.
Before roots can ever begin to establish, you need healthy soil to begin with. A solid foundation to build your stance upon. Without it, it will always be a struggle to gain footing whether it be in gardening or in life.

I dont get much about the ending but i am glad for what i do get, on my playthru i did the 9 spirits fight without attacking, which, ended up echoing what Dusty said about self defense, a change of heart in Buddy of sorts, laying down her weapon and instead doing something much harder than killing and destroying, creating and nurturing
I like to interpret it as the older woman being Buddy, living to old age and doing her part in restoring the world much more significantly than crapping out babies like the Rando army probably would have her do, without actually changing anything else about the world

Actually, I think the ending was supposed to symbolize an old Lisa holding Buddy in her arms.
I'm basing this on them being surrounded by flowers; as Brad once told Buddy that she enjoyed growing flowers.
The old woman's eyes are also not shown, much like how we never see Lisa's eyes.

I wish Buddy had a moment where she realized that Marty was also at fault, because she never learned the awful stuff he did. Ironically, even though Brad was never able to move on, he raised Dustin and Buddy who were the only Armstrong's that could

  • @Jack-lo5me
    @Jack-lo5me Před rokem +165

I kinda think that the ending is all situated abound that small item, the Child Skull.
    I think it represents three things;
    1. Buddy and her broken mind
    2. Buddy needing to have an open mind.
    3. Lisa; as everything else is in this fuckin game.
    1) We see that Buddy is… fundamentally pretty broken. Atleast in this ending. She seems to be unable to actually feel remorse. Instead, she is almost psychopathic. She knows only the truth but has a hard time understanding emotions. We even see that in the final text. Buddy is VERY cold with Brad. Even hateful. She seems to be able to feel, but not able to empathize, hence her crying starting because she feels sad and it being stopped by Brad giving her what she wants instead of appealing to emotions. My theory? Yado performed brain surgery on Buddy. Took out just a bit. Just enough that once she got a taste of this post apocalyptic wasteland, she would be MORE then ready to destroy it. That’s why the skull looks like Buddy.
    2) Buddy needs to have an open mind. Which is what we see in the ending. Buddy being so big is most likely either perspective or symbolism- but I think the baby in the pink is supposed to be buddy’s child, and Buddy is the almost holy figure in the blue robes. Buddy gains an open mind, open enough to realize that violence is a tool, not a solution. So she uses violence to keep others in line and keep others safe. Then she has an open mind enough to have sex with a man, having a child. Atleast one, probably many if she can. Again, she may not LIKE it, but she has enough of an open mind to give the world a second chance. That’s why the skull looks like Buddy.
3)Lisa. It’s Lisa’s skull. We know that Lisa looks a LOT like Buddy. Black hair, similar build, similar face before Buddy got hers messed up… and we know that Lisa WAS a very angry person. Or atleast very violent. But not enough to actually do anything. That’s why Buzzo is so important; he is her enabler. Giving her a tool to actually ENACT her hatred onto things. I think Buddy was right. If Buzzo had never met Lisa, then Lisa might have grown? Or atleast wouldn’t have gotten worse. Lisa was the spark, and Buzzo was the tinder. Neither is Fire without the other. ANYWAY- we know Lisa hung herself, but we also know that Marty was INCREDIBLY abusive, and hit Brad a whole lot. Who’s not to say he hit her on the head? This one isn’t really that big of a point… but what I think is… is that with the skull in your inventory, Buzzo can’t hear Lisa. Like, now that you have her skull, YOU have her soul with you. And because of all of that…
That’s why the skull looks like Buddy.

I think #2 is a little off, mainly because Buddy was perceptive and open minded to the idea of being mankind's second chance for 99% of Lisa the Painful, being completely willing to be their savior and babymaker even though she didn't understand the extent of what that'd entail. It's only when Brad tells her--moments before he succumbs to the Joy--that being mankind's savior, giving the world "another chance" would be removing Buddy's own chance for living as her own person. Being "the girl" who would help in repopulating the world would mean she herself would be merely a tool, a hero with no name--"The Girl." That being said, you could argue that she needs to be open minded to this possibility again, but I don't think she would have a child for the sake of mankind as a whole.
Rather, I think the open-mindedness idea is a lot like your #1 representation and that Buddy needs to be more open-minded about emotional connection and familial relationships with other human beings. This comes up with the conversation with her uncles, Dusty, and the reveal of the child at the end. Buddy's child is her being open-minded about family again--the child is her giving *herself* as a person, perhaps as a caretaker, another chance.

Number 1 with Yado taking out a bit of Buddy's brain seems like a bit of a stretch, just a little bit (considering how insane Yado is already I will say I wouldn't put it past him, but I feel Buddy would have been too young to survive an operation like that, especially since Yado struck me as the chemist/scientific genius type than the surgeon type). I feel like the events that happened over the course of Painful is what truly broke Buddy: Brad's parenting, the urgency of every situation she's always in, and conflicting commands of what she should and shouldn't do.
      - Brad himself was also clueless about his emotions, his flashback with Lisa is evident of this as well when she gives him the dead flower in the base game, "It's already dead so why should I take care of it?" The way I see it, Buddy mirrored this POV because Brad had no wisdom to share on the matter, because he was still figuring out why he should persevere through hardship as well.
      - Urgency because, well, everyone was constantly ushering her around everywhere, constantly, wherever she went. Things went by so fast in a manner so sloppily (if that's the right word for it), things Buddy had yet to understand in full, and because of how traumatic each situation was, it only makes sense she would rather take the easy way out than to humor people around her with little to no regard for her safety or concerns.
      - And the final thing, I feel that what Brad said really did stick with Buddy, because examples of it happened right in front of us with Buzzo cutting off her nipple and Sticky's dad clawing her eye out. Brad's worries weren't unfounded, but he looked at the world so negatively that he expected the worst to happen to Buddy the moment she stepped foot outside. Brad and everyone else only pose two options to her, that being to be an obedient daughter until she's an adult or to have sex with everyone and pop out babies like they expect her to, a black and white with no grey area, and obviously she hated both choices and tried to carve her way out of the situation without posing an alternate solution to the problem as a whole.
As for the skull belonging to Lisa, I feel it's less of the skull belonging to her, and more of Buddy paralleling her as a person, because you gotta admit, besides paralleling Brad, Buddy parallels Lisa in very, very many ways beyond appearance, down to Buddy finding Buzzo's violence and power enthralling. That isn't to say that Lisa was a violent person, just that she was incredibly morbid throughout her life, and considering this, if Buzzo and Buddy met when he was a child, I feel it would have turned into a similar situation as what happened when Buzzo was with Lisa.
That in and of itself was the key to his undoing, because he warped Lisa as a person into this violent character in his head giving him excuses as to why he's doing the things he does, so when Buddy starts to lash out and scold him, everything Buzzo fooled himself into believing is turned on its head (literally, lol), snapping him back to reality. Because here's the closest person to Lisa he's ever met and is ever going to meet, telling him that she never EVER would have wanted this outcome, and that Lisa never would have either, and suddenly all the delusions he has defining why he's a victim are silenced; because it's not TRULY what Lisa would have wanted, and having known nothing else but power and the impact Lisa had on him, he ends up going baby mode and having a temper tantrum about why things didn't work out for him by being his true, violent self, showing that he's been stuck in his ways since the beginning.
With Buddy's skull being open, she has an open enough mind to understand what Lisa's lesson was when Brad told the story, it's because of this that she's able to put herself in Brad and Lisa's shoes, she came to understand the benefit of nurture, and the consequences of unbridled violence, something Brad learned far too late and that Buzzo never understood or accepted at all.
At least, that's how I see it.

I only disagree on the theory of Yado tampering with her brain. I feel her psychopathy stems from Brad being unable to each empathy, it being a reason outside of her upbringing would take away from her character and removes agency.

I don't recall exactly, but it's probable that I got it from Dice Mahone's Warlord Skill “Roll the Dice”.

This new ending feels like bad fan fiction, like austin got criticised for joyful and went back in to change stuff
The dialogue between buddy and buzzo is so lame and so overt and the "maybe lisa would have lived if she didn't meet you" was so stupid

The only way it made sense to me, personally. Was that Buddy was being purposefully a dick because she went back and forth so rapidly in her emotions that I assume it was meant to the emotional/ mental strain cracking her up. But even then, it's still a reach. Buzzo was a villain but no more in the Lisa scenario than Lisa herself.

@@ndfdm5705 He's absolutely more of a villain than Lisa, Lisa was girl who was abused and violated by her father since she was little. I don't think Lisa "made" Buzzo how he is, they just enabled each other, Buzzo ascribes a lot of things to what Lisa "would of wanted" but as far as we know she never actually said any of those things, for all we know she never would of wanted him to torture Brad like he did or hurt Dusty or scar Buddy, he just used her as an excuse to do those things, he hid behind it.
Lisa's only real crime was being an unstable person, and after what she went through I don't think it's possible she could of turned out any other way.

@@BE-fw1lr Agreed. A lot of the story is defined by how characters can't cope with the grief of what happened to Lisa. It broke Brad, defining how he treated Dusty and Buddy and how he acted throughout all of The Painful. I think that some of the additions are meant to show that Bernard always had something twisted in him, and his interactions with and loss of Lisa made that twisted thing grow into the Buzzo we see throughout the games.
I will say, though, Buddy's dialogue is a bit forced at the end, as is her listening in on her long-dead uncles.

unfortunately i agree. It went on and on and goes against the pace of the entire series. LISA characters spoke very little but they were extremely impactful when they did. Buddy's dialogue was all over the place and trampled on the original legacy instead of adding to it :(
