This stuff goes deep. Most meme lives start out innocent but the fascist media culture is so prevalent and skews art and cultural content to push public humiliation. Now that people are fighting back and using media to showcase these injustices is so important. Trouble is it hits so close to home because our culture is so zombified and uncaring for the people of their country.

Everyday prejudice in public is real. To stop these things, they need to be spoken about and discussed to cause action. Awareness needs to be raised and the fact that youtube and google is stopping this shows just how r*cist (I use the asterisk because apparently I should on this site) they really are.

I was a hairdresser for many years. Karen's hair looks like for a reason. She started out with a classy, elegant a-line bob & it looked beautiful, but she kept driving her hairdresser bonkers asking for it to be more & more stacked in the back until her hairdresser had to cut it so short that they finally suggested using clippers; at which point Karen emphatically objected by declaring that was "way too short" (lol). Karen "still wanted the length in the front, but she wanted it blended", so now it looks heavy in the front like 2 different haircuts. Also, Karen doesn't want to use product, or style her hair with a blow-dryer, so she managed to create this haircut that really could stand to be called 'The Karen', which works out okay because she also dictated to her stylist that she "didn't want a bob"... after she spent the entire consultation describing a bob. The chunky blond highlights were actually the easy part UNLESS the subject of bleach was broached, because Karen wants her hair as blond as possible, but she "doesn't want bleach". May the Lord bless and keep Karen... far away from me ;)

Everything is racist or sexist or ___phobic. Everyone is a simp, cuck, incel, boomer, Karen, thot, soyboy, etc. And for non memes, everyone throws around the labels Nazi, white supremacist, nationalist, etc. Even the idea of trying to play victim, Karen's compared themselves to the n-word. In Thailand, the equivalent of Karen is "มนุษย์ป้า" or literally "auntiewoman," mocking Superwoman or other superheroines. These auntiewomen or unclemen (male equivalent) behave similarly to the original Karen, except being white as obviously most Thais are not white. Their senses of entitlement in this case emerge from "being elderly" or "being hierachically higher" due to our cultures of respecting the elders or people with higher social ranks.

He said his mom was a nurse who worked in a retirement home and they used them. I agreed that they are for everyone and agreed that people shouldn’t hoard toilet products. He then yelled at me for thinking moms rule everything and called me a Karen. I was extremely confused, because he yelled at me for words I never said. It was kind of funny. I recently read a post in which someone said they did think there was some sexism to the use of the Karen meme, not in the sense that these women with this repulsive behaviour don't exist, but in the sense that it created a feeling that this is the worst type of customer that a worker can encounter. Several people with experience in service jobs replied saying they agreed and that as annoying as women like this are, the internet focused on them, and not on men, who in their experience were the ones who had actually scared them, threatened them with violence, sexually harassed workers, etc. personally, while bartending I've had a middle aged woman ask me to make a very uncommon drink that we didn't have the ingredients for, and after I told her, she insisted and behaved like I was being stupid and like her day was ruined. Which was very annoying. However, men have, well, harassed me. On the other hand, i get the Karen meme is a very USA culture thing and I'm not from the US so my opinion might not be relevant.
TLDR: there is some sexism to calling out privileged women for being assholes if one doesn't dedicate the same effort to calling out privileged men who are just as much or even bigger assholes.

Funny thing is, the one time I didn't so that, it got kinda messy with the server. My friends and I were out at a pub on a busy night when my food order got mixed up. I was about to go with it when my friends insisted I get it changed. They were all "That's not what you wanted. You shouldn't have to eat it" and got me to flag down the server to get my order fixed. Turned out the server was a 'Karen' (or at least maybe she was having a bad enough day that she was acting like a 'Karen'-- it was a busy night at the pub after all) and started arguing with me that *I* was wrong and the food she gave me was exactly what I ordered with this angry, indignant look on her face. Thankfully my friends were there to stand up for me and basically act as witnesses, so she backed down and got my proper order. Would've never happened without them.
Thinking back, I still find her indignant anger really weird and off-putting. I mean, I wasn't being a 'Karen' myself (as far as I know). I think I only said one sentence before she started snapping back at me. If my friends hadn't been there I would have definitely backed down myself and just taken the food I had ended up with.
Sometimes I wonder if the server actually did eventually realize she misheard me when I ordered (as I said the pub was busy that night so it was understandable), or if in true 'Karen' form, she was doing the mental gymnastics to convince herself *she* was right, probably rationalizing that all my friends were all just lying about what they had heard me order to get it changed, and had only backed down 'cuz my friends spoke up too and a 4v1 argument that would have ended up involving the manager would have ended badly for her.

Star cherry, I believe that you do not understand. Karen is used as a broad term, not just towards white women. Black women can be Karens as well. However, Shaniqua is used specifixally towards Black women, which is what makes it racist. I'm sorry if there are any spelling mistakes here, as I'm using my kindle to write this, as it's hard to type on it.

@@castalia120 No I DO understand. "Shaniqua" was a very common Black name at the time. Along with "Shawanda." My point is nobody defended Black girls and women at the time, and these stereotypes were harmful for an entire generation of Black people. Nobody wants to name their kid that anymore because everyone thinks it's rachet/ghetto, and people that have that name STILL struggle to get jobs and be taken seriously.
Now that White women are facing a similar taste of their own medicine with the name, "Karen" a common stereotypical name for a White woman. More people calling it problematic.
Any time someone calls you a Karen you're being associated with a stereotypical entitled White woman. Just like how anybody named Shawanda was associated with being a stereotypical rude low class Black woman.
Stereotypes are dumb we ALL know anybody with any type of name coming from any background, can be rude, entitled and low class. But our society is less willing to call out harmful stereotypes towards Black women than they are White women. Names like Shaniqua and Shawanda were used on comedy shows for YEARS for laughs, and faced not one minute of backlash.
The name Karen is getting news coverage and video essays titled "is it problematic?"

Last year I saw a woman park into a handicap spot just to get a smoothie.
Where I live, you can get a special license plate that indicates that you are disabled and she did not have it. When I told her that she was in the handicap spot, hoping that it was an accident, the first thing she said was “Oh, I’m just gonna be in and out.”
Yes, I do understand that there are invisible disabilities, but the way she acted did not indicate that and she did move her car out of the handicap spot shortly after I confronted her (which she did very hastily and nearly rear ending the car behind her).
When I posted the story on Reddit, instead of being praised for standing up for the disabled, I was called a Karen for confronting someone committing an illegal act with only a few people siding with me. I’m autistic and I have never encountered a wild Karen before, so how was I supposed to know how to properly interact with one?

As a retail worker, I NEVER make a decision about questionable returns. I say, "I can't accept this, wait and I'll call the manager." Experience has taught me that management will usually override the decision of the employee to show their authority. That's why Karens ask for them so often. Getting the manager right away robs the Karen of the pleasure of seeing the employee "put in her place," and robs the manager of the pleasure of undermining the employee.

This is so frustrating because I think it undermines the way the word was originally used. Just today I heard a middle aged Mexican woman openly speaking about her own fear of “morenitos” meaning black people and how she didn’t trust them, and how they are scary and blah blah I stopped listening. The point is I’ve grown up listening to similar remarks my whole life and I’m so sick of it because it can be just a meme but it definitely shows a more deep rooted racism not only within white people but also among other poc against black people and it needs to be talked about more imo.

In Mexico (I cannot speak for all spanish speaking contries) it can be used to convey affection, a lot of people would consider "negrito" and "negrita" to be terms of endearment for exemple. But given the context I believe in this case it's used as a patronizing way to refer to darker skinned people, which includes people of native american descent.

Mexican Karens (I STAND BY MY POINT THAT MEXICAN KARENS ARE "CÑORAS", FITE ME) use it in a disrespectful manner. ...It's disrespectful anyway in the case of "morenitos", but there's also tone deaf Karens that think brown people are cute and go "aww, un morenito". Erm....the reason they say that is because you use someone's race as part of the attack. The black community invented the term to describe WHITE women. The other word was used by the white community to describe black people.
Both are wrong. I've met "karens" of all generations, races and backgrounds. Until I saw this video I had no idea that it was invented to describe white women who embodied those characteristics. I've met far more Asian women who act this way than white.
You think that being white means you can't get harassed by the police??? You know who gets harassed by the police more than anyone? People with mental health issues. Doesn't matter what colour their skin is, most cops are sadists and I've seen them try to wind people up who clearly have such health issues and when they react use that as a reason for arrest and then use "reasonable force" on them. The police are awful towards lots of people...a lot join the police force cause they can physically hurt people and not be subject to criminal investigation and prosecution. In the UK, someone can be injured in custody and as long as it hasn't resulted in death or a very serious impairment then it's investigated internally, I. E. The senior of the officer gets to deal with it. Any evidence is not available to the victim, and it often gets written off as reasonable force based on evidence only they get to see. If they were investigated for criminal assault then they wouldn't be doing this to people!
I work for a mental health charity and have heard plenty of stories of this happening. There were no higher instances of such treatment occurring against people of colour, and I live in London.

@@dvb5670 I'm not saying that it doesn't happen...of course it does. But, in this day and age and where I live, you're actually seeing the opposite happening. If the police want to randomly arrest someone to meet their target for arrests, they are more likely to go for a white male because they won't get accused (quite rightly in many cases) of being racist for doing so. The more arrests they have the more productive they appear.
The point is that if you're white you can still be targeted by the police for no reason and as a white person you have no comeback for it at all. The worry of being accused of racism has resulted in a lot of high profile cases actually being ignored by the police and there's plenty of research to back this up.
And the comment I was responding to originally said "do you get shot at by the police"...Obviously I cannot comment in the context of the US as I do not live there. But in the context of British police brutality...it's wrong to suggest that white people don't get targeted. If you want to speak about police brutality, acknowledge that it does happen to everyone and being white gives us no protection. A shitty sadistic police officer won't care about someone's race, age or gender.
And if you're saying it's ok to be targeted by the police due to a disability and that this isn't worse than skin colour....no, it's not worse or better it's still a misuse of power. But the majority of the population whatever their skin colour still think it's ok to have someone arrested due to their mental health. A few weeks back there was a woman wailing in the street where I live, her husband had passed away from the virus and she couldn't be with him. She was having a break down in the middle of the street. A woman called the police on her and said she was disturbing her and her children. The woman having the breakdown was arrested for breach of the peace (a civil offence but still). And guess what...the woman who was arrested was white, probably early 40s. The woman who called the police on her was a young black woman likely in her mid to late 20s. Is that not a "Karen" ? The woman's skin colour has bugger all to do with this, she would have done that if it had been someone of colour also. She was just not a nice person. I've seen her "clapping for carers" at 8pm every Thursday yet she insisted that the police arrest this poor bereaved woman. She was filming it and threatening to post it online and make a complaint if they didn't arrest the woman.
There are good people of all races and bad people of all races, and that's the bottom line. And even if there are stats for the present day showing that more people of colour are randomly targeted, that doesn't demean the fact that white people are also targeted. We should be standing up for each other as human beings against corruption like that, not dependent on someone's skin colour.

“Are all women Karens? No Karens are Karens. If you’re behaving like a Karen that’s on you.” This reminded me of something. I was talking with some friends (at the time) and one of the guys wouldn’t stop dwelling on how violence against women and domestic violence in particular aren’t a real issue at all. I shared some of my experiences with it and the things I’ve seen. We started arguing, everyone present was on his side. I wasn’t surprising or new to me at all (I’m from Eastern Europe) but what was really interesting is the reasoning. In the middle of our argument one of the girls said to me “Some woman just behave in a way that shows they deserve it” to which I replied “If some woman do maybe you do as well?” she replied something along the lines “Why the f are you insulting me? I’m not talking about all woman. Only the ones who really deserve it. If I behave myself, I’ll never end up battered. If you do that’s on you honey, if you don’t want to be beaten up don’t act like a bitch.” Then a few of the guys said things like “See, she gets it, only women who are really asking for it get beaten up” others just nodded approvingly. It’s been three years, I haven’t spoken with any of those people since. A month an a half ago I found out that girl’s boyfriend has abused her. Even though I feel really sorry for her I must say I got confirmed in my belief. It is not how it works, people can do things to you, call you names regardless of whether you “deserve it” or not. Karen meme is outright sexist. Calling it sexist wouldn’t be denying black people a vocabulary to describe their oppression since most of those who use it are white males. It’s kind of the same story as calling white girls basic white bitches why don’t you call guys basic white jerks, why isn’t that a thing? If someone is racist it doesn’t mean you suddenly have the right to be sexist. If you recognise that racism is a despicable form of discrimination why won’t you do the same with sexism? White women aren't the only people who act entitled and get away with it. So many racist white man and stil no term for them... Why not change Karen to Donald?

Kind of like the "karens " who believe it is within their rights to harass other people.
As for the white guys, there's Kyles, Jareds, Aiden Brayden and Okeydens, or the poshy wait-till-my-father-hears-of-it rich boys. They don't have a name I think.

Its not sexist. It can be used in a sexist manner but its not sexist. The video has pretty much presented it why.
Now if you're wonder why there's no male equivalent then ... there is kevin already. So, why isnt Kevin as popular as Karen? Because black twitter has a history of making popular memes and as corona started, the amount of karens pertaining their social behaviour coupled with the spare time people had in their hands made this meme gigantic.
And another factor goes to the fact that many, with an emphasis on MANY upper class women behave this way versus men of same social and economic class group. Reason, you may ask? Because, regardless of where you live(even in most gender equal nations), a upper class household has husband outearning their wife(mostly). Which basically means the household is upperclass because of the economic contribution of the husband and not wife. And if there's one thing earning your own s#it teaches, its that you should be humble about it.
In my life, I've met so many people this way and dare I say *most* were women(upperclass) with no job and living off their husbands money and its not hard to see where that snarks comes from.

Then, once I had finally made it absolutely perfect, she and I made eye contact as I set it down by the bar (she hadn’t seen who had made it all those times before), and boom! It was wrong. It had to be remade. 🙃🙃😢

I think maybe the idea of "Karens" does have maybe a slight sexist bent, if only because it was conceived as a gender-specific insult that cannot by used on men. There's been some talk of "Darrens" and other male equivalents, but it's a sidebar to the meme, not the meme itself. We like to sensationalize women when they get ragey and entitled more than we do men, who lose it at least as often that way and there's a double standard there. That said, we do need to talk about how women use entitlement and race and class privilege specifically, and this is a useful way to do so. Most Karens are indeed asshole humans before the sexism aspect of calling them so is considered.

It is so sad that you have to censure the word "racist" because if not this video might be taken down or demonetized

I would like to take this opportunity to say my mom is named Karen and she’s a lovely accepting person. She’s only spoken to a manager once and it was to make sure the correct worker got the large tip! She breaks the stereotype and I am proud.

Very nice comment. My mom is named Karen, too. She's just a quiet older lady who minds her own business and tries not to cause trouble, so definitely not a "Karen." She's not super pop culture savvy, so I hope no one tells her about this meme. It might hurt her feelings to see her name dragged through the mud by people 15 years younger than her who act terrible and selfish.

I'm with you with the meme purism lol. Using a meme in a way that differentiates so much from its original meaning that it's something completely different is honestly just the same as using a word incorrectly. It bothers me so much. Also your colour coordination is so on point, I was literally sitting here thinking multiple times how good it looked with the hair, the shirt, the makeup, the cream/dark blue/orange background :D

"Karen" is a name/term that describes someone's character, the n-word only describes someone's race. This is why I can't take the idea of "Karen" being a slur seriously.

Right, I agree. If you’re calling someone out for their behavior (something they can change), it should not be seen as derogatory. Whereas when people insult static characteristics about a person like race and religion then it gets derogatory.

      @fds7476 Před 4 lety +24

Karen is as much of a slur as 'shrew' or 'egomaniac'.
      Ie: It isn't.

    • @Alex-rh8mr
      @Alex-rh8mr Před 4 lety +9

I def agree. This might be a volatile subject but I feel like lately I’ve been seeing more and more ppl using racism as an excuse not to change their behavior, like if you say anything about their nasty actions you’re automatically racist and your opinion means nothing. To each their own of course but at some point it becomes detrimental to ourselves and others to ignore constructive criticism about our behavior. Same thing with some overweight ppl or feminazis, they’re convinced ppl could only not like them strictly bc of their appearance when in reality it’s their incredibly sucky personality that pushes most ppl away. Like it has nothing to do with appearance, I just don’t like you or think you’re a nice/good person??? It’s crazy how people can’t wrap their head around that. If someone doesn’t like my personality it hurts quite a bit bc I’m a ppl pleaser at heart and kinda really want to be liked by everyone but I also know there’ll always be ppl that won’t like me no matter what and I have to let them have their own feelings & perspective. Maybe I’m the only one experiencing this but I feel like I’d like to hear more ppl talk about it:)

While true, I have been called a Karen and a Becky for no other reason because I dared to criticizes this sort of famous woman for something she and her husband has done, the woman happens to be bi-racial.
I am as far from a Karen or Becky as can be. But It hurts, just as any name calling does- maybe I’m just sensitive 🤷‍♀️.
So yes, sadly, it is now being used as a slur against any white woman who happens to hold a a view the person does not agree with.
