- 150 Gram batches for cupping are easy in the Aillio Bullet, in particular with the new IR sensor. This video is about settings for roasting small, repeatable batches in the Bullet. It's another long and non-fancy video with a fair amount of repetition because it was commentary made over several sample roasts. I will post this roast curve to Aillio's Roast.
The Bullet used in this video is version 1.5. There are minor differences between this and the current model. Please refer to our website for up-to-date info on the AIllio Bullet.

So would you say there is a greater degree of convection with the bullet compared to other small/sample drum roasters? With the Ikawa due to the connective nature I would have thought that would have a really good 'colour spread' too right?
Great vid, been intrigued with the bullet as a sample roaster since day 1. Always thought it could be utilised in a commercial capacity and not just as a home roaster!
Dude I like your Hard Work, and personally I am also Dealing in Roasting Beans tho i know the Vary much verity In Roasted beans which provides Good Crema and ThiCknes in Every Shot.
Nice looking machine
Thank's ! But what method of roasting is better for flavor ?
Both are really good but the Bullet has a much larger capacity and drum roasters like the bullet have advantages when it comes to bringing out deeper, chocolaty notes.
Hi Tom, thanks for the video.
What makes the IKAWA home struggle with dry processed coffee?
How does roasting affect cup quality at lower temperatures? I was intrigued to hear that they were similar hot, but not when they cooled down a bit.
P.S. I think it would be helpful if the video title mentions a comparison to the IKAWA home. People seem to be curious about the IKAWA, but there are little to no articles or videos comparing it to competitors.
There isn't an actual home model of Ikawa launched yet. They focus on their Pro machine. So I apologize for comparing the two. Ours is a sort of prototype Ikawa. As far as roast evenness, it's hard in a super small batch, as the coffee itself is part of the roast system. Coffee absorbs and distributes heat, as people who roast in large drum machines know well: there's a point you can turn off burners and the coffee just roasts itself in a larger batch! A fresh natural (dry process) sample is going to be a challenge in many machines, but a 50 gram air roast that is 5-7 minutes will definitely be the most challenging to get a decent roast. So it's not so much about the ikawa, but just the issues with fast air roasts. I think my West Bend Poppery 1 could do ok with it, usually 8 min roasts of 125 grams... and costs $6 at the goodwill (I was lucky that day) -Tom
@@SweetMariasCoffee Hi Tom, a bit off topic here but as an Ikawa Home user I would like if you don't mind to share the profile used or your thoughts about a good starting point profile, like you said the 5-7 min frame is definitely challenging for a good roast . Thank you!
@@SorinLupu Hi Sorin, although we have used the Ikawa, we haven't spent a lot of time profiling with it. You might be better off using Ikawa's profile library as a starting point. www.ikawacoffee.com/pro-sample-roaster-profiles/
noticed a few beans not making it to the cooling tray and spilling out next to the roaster....is that common with the bullet?
It is common actually, and on this roast I have a high drum speed so its worse. It's a funny coincedence that I just made a small L shaped piece from aluminum flashing and was going to simply use that nearest faceplate screw to attach it to the roaster - problem solved.
Didn’t know u can hang the door handle over the tryer..... nice!
I’ve also begun using simple L-shaped wedges of aluminum foil. The faceplate got too hot for the 3D printed bean guards I had made.
5:00 thanks for the video mate, I love your natural, informal approach. I have been using a Dieckmann Rostmeister, which is really a hot air on a rotating drum roaster, works ok, but I want to progress, and really like this device. I'm curious about what you said here at 5:00, don't see how one could taste samples for the bean quality and not the roast... I mean, you can't taste without roasting... and different beans like different roasts so surely one has to roast each bean to it's most ideal profile to fairly compare?
In order to keep things consistent when cupping, we roast all coffees to the same level. It's the best way to judge quality when comparing the quantity of samples that need to be tasted.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Hi. But surely then, some beans will "get lucky" because the roast level you chose suits that bean, but will not suit other beans as well... so the lucky bean tastes better not necessarily because it is better, but because it got lucky!
Is it possible to run more than one roaster at a time and playback so you have the same profile come out of each roaster?
That's a great question. It sounds like you would need some sort of splitter to output the data to two machines. Try reaching out to our bullet technician or to Aillio for more specifics. bulletsupport@sweetmarias.com - aillio.com/?page_id=28
I see you dont have a vent setup, is the bullet self contained? or should you have a ventilation system setup if you are roasting in your garage?
The Bullet does produce smoke so you will need some sort of ventilation, especially if you are roasting dark and/or roasting multiple batches.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Thanks! Do you know when you are going to have the Bullet R1 V2's in-stock?
@@shannoncampbell You are welcome. Unfortunately, we don't have and ETA for our next batch but we are always talking with the manufacturer to find out when we can expect our next shipment. We'll let everyone know when we know.
F7? Thats a tornado in a "calibrated" unit. Do you know if this is calibrated or uncalibrated fan? Would be great to see an updated video of this with the V2 calibrated. I just couldnt get ANY heat at a F7. hmmmm
A higher fans speed is used in the beginning to promote evenness in the beginning of the process, then dropping it to 3 allows more heat to reach the beans.
@@SweetMariasCoffee what is the name you guys use on Roastime? Are we allowed to see the roasts you do? Roastime on the bullet allows to search by user now. I'd love to peruse the roasts.
@@pilotguy13 We don't have a profile yet. When we do, we'll let everyone know. Thanks!
Is this roaster a good starter roaster if I want to get into the buisness or is it to expensive for a first roaster
If you don't have any roasting experience, we recommend getting a small home roaster or popcorn popper to learn more about the roasting process. From there you will get a better idea of which larger roaster is good for your needs.
No only easy, but it allows users, say a producer and a buyer, use the exact same profile. I’m in Canada and the reseller here only sells the 220v unit. I’ve heard or read that the 220v unit might be able to deliver more power. We use 110v in Canada so I’m torn between buying a 110v from you or Aillio directly, or the one in Canada and rewire a plug or buy a transformer. Any thoughts?
To be honest, we think you would be better off with a 110v unit to avoid having to rewire or use another device. We aren't sure if the 220v unit delivers more power but if it does, that additional power wouldn't be necessary to creating great roasts.
@@SweetMariasCoffee thank you. I think I’m set on the 110v unit, even from a resell perspective.
Hi dear friends of @sweet Maria's Coffee, I have a 5 kg (LP gas) coffee roaster , and I want to know if Aillio Bullet will help to replicate it's results with my 5 kg coffee roaster?. any experience with that?
Great question. Sorry if this is a roundabout answer but each roaster is going to have it's own way of applying heat, cooling, etc so technically, yes, you can replicate roasts but achieving them won't be as simple as applying a similar roast curve.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Thank you so much
Tom,
You say that in a smaller roaster, you do not want to try to match the same roast landmark times as you do in a big commercial roaster.
If not, then how do you determine the shape of a roast profile for a specific roaster? What cues or landmarks do you base it on?
Each roaster and roasting method will deliver different types of roast curves due to the way they deliver heat, batch sizes, etc. so roast profile shapes will generally not transfer well between machines. 1st crack is the main cue and it can occur at different times and temps but it will be a solid point to base your roasts off of when using a single machine or method. We hope this helps.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Great video. As I get more into sample roasting and look to take my learnings into a bigger roaster I am hoping for some clarification. When you mention above about 1st crack being the main cue, are you saying that the time that happens is something you should try to match between the sample and the larger roaster?
@@bl3nd3rs The actual time coffee goes into 1st crack on the bullet and our production will vary because of the batch size .
Can you preheat this roaster before dropping the beans into it?
Yes, you can and it's suggested that the roaster is preheated before roasting
Do u guys have them in stock?
We are currently out of stock but home to get more soon. Please sign up to receive a notification on the Bullet Product page on our website. www.sweetmarias.com/aillio-bullet-r1-roaster.html
I noticed you guys are using extension cords on these, do they affect the power of the machines? I'd expect a power drop.
Great question. Yes, they do, but we haven't noticed a difference in our roasts when we use them. Your question did spur some interest around there so we are looking into measuring the differences today.
@@SweetMariasCoffee
Awesome! What did you guys find?
Great video! Would you mind sharing your JSON files so we can replicate these sample roasts ourselves?

@@SweetMariasCoffee Amazing! Thanks for the tips, I'll give this a try. I've been attempting to go as low as 50g for samples, but maybe I need to up it a bit.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Just to confirm, that's 225 Fahrenheit, not Celsius?
Will the Macintosh McBook be an adequate computer?
Yes, it will work. Please email our Bullet technician if you have any technical questions. bulletsupport@sweetmarias.com
@@SweetMariasCoffee Thanks, actually both items are on my wish list. Suspect I will get them both soon.
Do we actually need an exhaust extension on Aillio Bullet R1-V2? In this video, you are not attaching an exhaust extension. In other channels, some roasters use an exhaust extension. Thank you.
The room our roaster is in is set up so it won't trigger any smoke alarms. Roasting a few batches back to back would definitely produce a lot of smoke so an exhaust extension would be the best way to go for a home set up.
@@SweetMariasCoffee Thanks a lot for the info. I have bought Aillio and it's being delivered. I have read the manual but a demonstration and Q&A on technical aspects are always useful.
@@SweetMariasCoffee I am amazed about how thin the smoke that your Aillio is producing in this video. I have used my Aillio for seasoning the drum. Even before the first crack, my Aillio produced more smoke than yours. Anyway, I feel that roasting with Aillio is easier to control than roasting with a traditional drum roaster I have been using for 3 years. From Indonesia, I wish your Aillio sales go well.
"That does not make me uncomfortable at all" he says uncomfortably
why beans have such a different colors?
It's a little hard to see in the video but some of the roasted coffee beans still have some chaff on them. This can make the final roasted batch look uneven.
Hi. Can it be used in a commercial capacity?
Yes, but it depends how much coffee you will need to produce per batch for your business to be efficient.
@@SweetMariasCoffee thank you so much for your reply. For the moment I’d like to know if the Aillio is a good tool to begin with roasting and learning
@@costam5591 The Bullet is an awesome machine but may not the be the best for beginners. We recommend starting off with a popcorn popper so you can learn about the process coffee goes through as it's roasting before moving up to a more technical machine.
Can you roast in doors with this?
Yes. It's intended for indoor roasting. You just need to set up some sort of ventilation to keep the smoke from setting off your smoke alarms
