This is the famous folding umbrella market [Talat (market) Rom (umbrella) Hup (fold)]. It can be accessed either by road or train itself from the first station at Wong Wian Yai (Big Circle) where at the middle is King Taksin (who liberated Siam from Burma) statute. If my memory holds, it costs 15 baht (40 cents) for 3rd class ticket to arrive at this Maeklong station. Wong Wian Yai is about 5 km from Memorial Bridge, the first bridge built across Chao Phraya river about 100 years ago. At the foot of this bridge is King Rama I (who succeeded King Taksin and moved Siam capital to Bangkok) statue. Parallel to this bridge, there is another bridge and at the center is 2-meter wide Skywalk Garden which is for people who enjoy walking/sitting/drinking Thai beer while watching sunset at Chao Phraya river. Highly recommended.

Khao San Road (Rice Road) was famous for attracting backpackers over 30 years ago when the Net was just in its infancy by the words of mouth and such publication as Lonely Planet. The area used to be a center of rice trade 100 years ago as it nears Chao Phraya river and rice could be easily transported to be sold here. Now, you cannot even find a shop selling rice at all. The accommodation at this road was cheap 30-40 years ago, so cheap that you could find a room with a fan but with a common bathroom facility for only 100-200 baht/night. The street food was also very cheap, paying 20-30 baht including free water for a meal. There were several tour agents and even hired van/bus that could take you to Bangsaen, Pattaya, Hua Hin to see the sea. It was a stop place for young backpackers those days who would like to explore other provinces or neighboring Laos, Cambodia and Burma. The backpackers were not confined to western adults but even Korean and Japanese young adults could also be seen at Khao San Road. The place was even more popular when the Net was widely available 20 years ago. During Covid when there was no business, BMA (city govt) renovated the area and turned it into a permanent walking street and it was reborn as a gathering place for party goers for both Thai and foreigners. However, you could not find a cheap 100-200 baht/night room to stay anymore. You can still find accommodation with air-con room at less than 500 baht/night.

Squeeze lime into Pad Thai, put bean sprout in, and sprinkle dried red chilli a little bit or more to enhance spiciness favor. Eat Pad Thai with fork and spoon and occasionally pick green veggie and chew it. When Pad Thai was promoted by Prime Minister Field Marshall Pibulsongkram during WWII as a national dish, it was supposed to be cheap but delicious. Nowadays the price range can be dirt cheap about US$1 on the street to $10 in 5-star hotel. You can buy one at the price of $1 (35 baht) freshly cooked on local market but with no prawn as prawn is expensive. Pad Thai with prawns can be had on the street at the price around 60-80 baht ($1.5-2.2).

Singha beer in brown bottle was introduced/produced into Thailand about 100 years ago using German recipe by King Rama VI court official Pirompakdi family ancestor. It was highly appreciated by both Thai and expat drinkers. Even though other local brand was introduced one or another but could not shake Singha's dominance and died away until Thai Beverages, the largest and most dominant liquor producer (mostly rum and white spirit) in Thailand, decided to partner with Carlberg to produce the brand locally to compete with Singha. It also resulted in a failure to challenge Singha. Both sides gradually drifted apart and Carlberg was eventually no longer produced locally. Before the final breakup, Thai Beverages introduced Chang (Elephant) beer in green bottle, which was much cheaper to gain market share from Singha. It was successful in a few years after heavy promotion and discounted price, and became No.1 seller. This was the reason that Carlberg decided to quit the Thai market as it seemed its Thai partner did not care to promote Carlberg anymore after Chang beer was successfully introduced. Singha did not give in and introduced Leo in brown bottle at the same price of Chang and it instantly became a success as well. Now, Chang and Leo are neck and neck, dominating local Thai beer market. Owners of Chang/rum/white spirit and Singha/Leo are Thai billionaires.
Note: Alcohol sale is banned on religious holidays and evening prior to general election day and election day itself. On regular day, alcohol sale is available from 11.00-14.00 and 17.00-24.00 at 7-11 and mini/super stores, Lotus or Big C. However, this is Thailand and you can always buy your favorite beer/liquor at your small convenient store in your village at all hours (if the store opens). Some shops stay open until 2 am on Friday and Saturday in some villages. Don't know why the police ignore those small shops selling alcohol at all hours.

Traditional Thai costumes seen at Wat Arun are hi-so and usually worn by wives of high officials at former occasions such as Royal Ballroom celebration at Government House or at Official New Year's morning merit making presided by Thai prime minister/wife as well as cabinet ministers/wives. Woman also wears traditional Thai dress during wedding ceremony while Thai man usually wears western suit or white formal uniform if being civil servant.
Legend states that when King Taksin, at the time Ayutthaya mandarin, led some troops to break the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya and arrived at this old temple at dawn, so the temple was then named Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). After Ayutthaya fell after one-year siege, he led troops from Chanthaburi province to expel the occupied Burmese troops in Ayutthaya. Then he proclaimed himself King and moved the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi and built a royal palace adjacent to Wat Arun and this temple then became the Royal Temple within the Palace domain in line with Ayutthaya tradition. The same could be said about King Rama I when he moved the capital from Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River and built Emerald Buddha Temple within the Grand Palace. King Rama III was also known as Merchant Prince because when he was still a prince he conducted trade with China and asked the ship captain to bring back stone sculptures such as Chinese deities, mythical beasts as stabilizing balance in the ship's belly. These stone sculptures are now commonly seen at Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace.
When Thonburi was still a distinct province before it was dissolved to form Bangkok metropolis about 50 years ago, Thonburi's symbol was Phra Prang (Stupa) of this temple. Phra Prang is lit at night and can be seen from tour boats or roof-top bars on the opposite side of Chao Phraya River.
