The suspect followed along behind it, trying to pick it up. Eventually the suspect was able to grab hold of the gun, and when he looked up, he found that he'd been lured into a jail cell at the local police station. My mother actually escaped Rodney Alcala when she was in middle school. He offered her a ride on her walk home from school, to which she accepted, but the moment she got in the car she felt like something was off. He ended up asking my mom if he could come inside her house to take some photos. My mom agreed, and she convinced him that she had to go check if her parents were home first (which she knew they were not). She hid in her room, holding my grandfather's shotgun, absolutely scared to death. This was towards the end of his spree, so my mother theorizes that he must have gotten so cocky as to let her out of his car. Thank god for her intuition! Her childhood photos are literally the spitting image of his victims. So scary.

It's amazing how, after watching the prosecution botch catching him two times, Rodney Alcala decided to say "hold my beer" and proceed to give such a ridculous defense of himself in court, including calling himself to the stand and playing a song about wanting to kill someone to prove his innocence, that it sounds like what happens when you mess around and give wrong answers in Ace Attorney just to find out what the characters say.

    • @darklord884

Now that you say that, it could be a funny case for an Ace Attorney game to have a super guilty seeming defendant who insists on defending himself like Alcala did and in the end it turns out he's innocent, just too much of an idiot to help himself and Phoenix needs to do all the work again. Patty Rust was her name. her documentation of scene is heavily rewarded as one of the largest pieces of evidence to solidify DPR into a guilty conviction. i think the trauma he directly caused is often dulled by our own desensitization to true crime, but an FBI argent taking her own life after this case, i feel, speaks at deafening volumes.

Rodney Alcala playing the song “Alice’s Restaurant” at trial is funnier than you probably realized. Firstly, the song is around 19 minutes long and it’s HILARIOUS that he brought the flow of the trial to a stop just for that. Then there’s a point in the song where the protagonist, to dodge the draft for Vietnam, pretends to be crazy and wants to kill people in Vietnam, but that makes the army inspectors like him more and make him a better candidate for being selected. No doubt that Rodney was hoping that the judge would be attracted to his “twisted mind” or something and let him off free, OBVIOUSLY it did not work out like that but it’s so funny to think that’s what he was hoping for.
Great video Wendigoon, and great song Arlo Guthrie!

Just a quick correction on "Alice's Restaurant". The song's actually kind of a comedy protest song from the '60s - the narrator gets drafted into the war and tries to act 'crazy' by saying he wants to kill someone to avoid getting sent to Vietnam, but in doing so he actually becomes more enticing to the army. However, he then actually does get sent home when the army finds out he was arrested for littering once and they decide he's a degenerate.
My guess is that Alcala was trying to use the song to point out what he thought was the absurdity of his situation, completely unaware that he was the person acting absurd here, not those in the justice system.

I second that!! It's obvious how much hard work and time you put into all of your videos! You're killing it dude, genuinely. (Can I say that on CZcams btw?)

Alice's Restaurant, for those who don't know, is a 20 minute song about a guy telling his story of getting arrested for littering and going through the justice process. It's a pretty funny song, so it's kind of even funnier that Rodney Alcala just stood in the courtroom and played it as his closing statement.

Belle Gunness was a real piece of work... I can't believe that her case isn't covered all the freakin' time. It's a disturbing, disorienting fever dream that is truly stranger than fiction. The Last Podcast on The Left covered it, I really recommend the Belle Gunness episodes, but also the podcast in general is dope.

i get so excited seeing the golden state killer in these lists because i got to meet his defense attorney since he was a mentor in my law academy in hs. he told us all about it and it was so shocking to see how his murders played out
