  • Watch Analogplanet.com editor Michael Fremer try the safe alternative to wood glue for "spread and peel" record cleaning using the "Record Revirginizer" system from Australia invented by Cary Stoddard. At first it doesn't go smoothly, but you'll be both informed and amused, though the inventor might not be!. Please read the full review on analogplanet.com. I had some fun with this to make it entertaining but it is a serious product that works well if you are very careful how you use it.

There´s a reason for that; I spent 1,5 h cleaning records with it without any improvement!! Instead some records we´re destroyed by scratches from the cleaning. This is the worst crap I ever bought!

While I watched this, I did my very first wood glue peel on.a record that had already been through my vacuum cleaning machine, and still sounded like it had damage. A big repetitive tick/pop. The wood glue took away 90% of what the vacuum machine left behind. Night and day difference! Plus, there is more detail, clarity, breath, etc. I am now convinced of this method, as long as you are very careful to get it all off. I may need to pick up some of the stuff used in this video. Thanks!! This may be a great tool to have for older, dirtier records, at least until I can afford an ultrasonic machine.

You don't have to use your nails to scrape off any remnants that are left.....you simply take some of the stuff you just peeled off and dab it on the remnants and they stick to it....Breathtakingly simple and effective.

Thanks Michael, I've actually tried the Vinyl Revirgizer, (fluid, not complete kit) and works just fine especially on old, absolutely filthy 45s from the 50s and 60s, that I paid pennies for. Not sure that I'd be buying ablums in the kind of condition to need such a product, pretty happy with my Clearaudio vacum machine. I've tried the PVA (wood glue) too again on old 45s and that too works absolutely fine and is about 10% of the cost, however the PVA glue can take several days to dry out completely and will damage labels if you are careless enough to get glue on the label. The Revirginizer is a good product, but the records really do need a clean with a decent fluid and vacuming dry, so great for absolutely filthy records but not so much for general second hand finds.

  • @mickricksbsc
    @mickricksbsc Před 4 lety

Does it really need that much liquid on a single side? It looks like about a quarter of a bottle on each record. I'm sure the liquid isn't cheap either.

  • @georgeanastasopoulos5865

Very revealing. I'm not exactly an expert at completely cleaning vinyl, but from what I've watched on CZcams, and a friend of mine I clean a record in the following way. I mostly clean my records using 2 cups of distilled water, mild dish-washing liquid - 1 tablespoon, a teaspoon, or two of isopropyl alcohol, 91%, a couple drops of "rinse aid" liquid, then mix in a spray bottle. For cleaning and wiping I use towels, micro fibre cloth, and a bit of elbow grease. Anyhow, when that cleaning process is over, I think it is a good thing to rinse the record again with water, but preferably distilled water again!
Then let vinyl record dry. Then wipe surface of record with an anti-static brush; I use Audio Technica brand. Anyhow, now that is the method I practice on cleaning a record. If not actually very dirty, maybe just clean with distilled water, and wiping with an anti-static brush is what is required.
Also, I'm a music fan first, a bit of an audiophile second; and that English researcher, as you've pointed out has it mostly wrong, and not accurate. People who collect records are not actually very withdrawn, introverted folk, Micheal. Anyway, Although a bit questionable concerning the pure condition of a record after this process of cleaning using this liquid chemical that dries, I think this demonstration of cleaning records is helpful. If not completely safe regarding the after-effects for this method, only my opinion; it is also a different way of record-cleaning, anyway.

Bought similar formula over 30 years ago. You got an applicator and jig to avoid spillage. You removed the dried PVC by peeling it off. Incidentally use masking tape to remove any slivers around the label and dead wax. Trouble is that on playing the cleaned record, your stylus tip would pick up a lot of film residue in the form of a fine PVC dust. Abandoned using it because of this problem. Think record collecting is a perfectly reasonable and rewarding hobby.

I use Gorilla wood glue and apply it by hand and I have never gotten any on the label, have rarely had problems removing the dried glue (use plenty of glue to avoid removal problems) and it can in fact be used on records which are either very dirty or only mildly dusty. And a most important factor is that wood glue is by comparison very affordable. Wood glue has no properties which are dangerous to the vinyl and also dries within 2 to 6 hours depending how much glue you apply.

I don't see how you can go on a tirade against wood glue when you jumped through all these hoops with something that could just as well be the same thing with a different name (maybe you can even use record revirginizer to repair old furniture)!
I think these were uneven spreads and possibly not thoroughly dried when peeled in the video. With wood glue, I use a business card to spread it out evenly and I use Titebond II; other brands and variations have different set/cure times and there are "cheap" glues out there that are not good for the process. TB2 has been pretty thoroughly community tested and has done well by me so far (used sparingly).

I swear by Titebond II. I mean... it gets down into the grooves and removes _everything._ When you can turn a VG+ into a NM in a few days, what's not to like?

I'm very introverted, never lonely. I will talk people into a coma about records, styli and speakers. ; )

In the UK Wood Glue (PVC) Is about £3 for 5 Liters, This stuff that Is £30 to £40 for that little Bottle. Both You have to wait for hours to dry. I'll stick with my Spin Clean. In the UK We call the platter a Lazy Susan. The Puck In the Middle Is Upside Down Lol. I play mine through a SweetVinyl SugarCube SC-1 and clicks and Pops Disappear no matter how bad the record Is.

Most of the potential chemistry that would cause you to "have a good time" would also mess up the vinyl.

I'd think I would use it on really dirty dirty records, where the dust was "ground in" the grooves over time! I would use a different method for everything else!

What it does (or suppose to do) is stick ALL the particles that's ground into to the grooves by the styli to the garden glue, and make it like new again (unless you have scratches)! I would only use it on old records that sound like "rain on an umbrella" due to ground in particles, not regular record's that need regular cleaning! And certainly not on prize or grail records!

It makes more sense to scrub your records with carbolic soap and then piss on them.
