    Heat mats, heat bulbs, and ceramic emitters... which one is best? Today, I go over the pros and cons of each. Keep in mind, none are necessarily “better” than another all of the time. It depends on the animal, the temperatures needed, and the circumstances you’re in.

    IMPORTANT, TORTOISES:
    Never use heat mats with tortoises. Tortoises like to burrow to chill out. If they start burrowing and there's warmth, they'll keep digging to find cold and badly burn themselves due to direct exposure. Once again, do not but heat mats for tortoises!

      Youre animal should never ever be able to get burned from a heat mat. If your animal is getting burned you have a unregulated heat mat. You should be using a thermostat with heat mats. Heat mats can reach 160°F- 200°F unregulated.

    I have a heat light and a heat mat for each of my snakes. The way I use them is I use only the heat lamp during the day in the cooler months and then the heat mat at night for the light cycle. Since the ambient temperatures are pretty hot in the summer I just use the heat mat 24/7 so then my snakes can still have a warmer spot especially if they are digesting. The pro of just using the heat mat in the summer is the bulb raises the ambient temps, whereas the heat mat only heats the area it's touching.

    Heat mats can work with wooden enclosures. You just have to get a heat mat holder. It's a glass holder that sticks to the bottom of the tank and holds the mat in place while allowing the heat out

    • @GoHerping
      @GoHerping  Před 7 lety +19

      I think it depends on the situation. I always put a heat mat as priority so in the warm months (like now) I can get by with just a heat mat. However as it gets cooler, I have to add a lamp too, to keep up temperatures. So you may need to buy a mat, and see if it's enough before getting a bulb depending on your houses's temps.

My idea is to place a 250 Watt no light heat bulb in a ceramic lamp above and have it heat a large rock below for belly heat (emulating the sun). Of course i have this hooked up to a temp controller and use different lights for day/night stuff. So far, everything reads spot on. We'll see how it goes when my new buddy gets here.

    For my year old ball python I have her in a 4ft wooden vivarium. At first I struggled to give her belly heat but now I keep a large piece of slate under her heart bulb. This works fine since she can go there to get her belly heat and her viv is kept the correct temperature. I also use a heat bulb that emits light but that's not an issue since I drop the temperature at night and the light dims or doesn't have to be on at all since wooden vivs hold heat so well. Hopefully this will help someone if they're stuck on heating a wooden vivarium :)

      The ON/OFF cycle on bulbs weaken the filament. UTH's do not suffer from that. For a ceramic heat emitter and UTH, using a more expensive proprtional thermostat will increase the life of the heater compared to using an ON/OFF thermostat like that ipower. I have CHE's going 10 years, same with heat pads - all still going strong. Light bulbs require ON/OFF control because they emit light, or else a dimming proportional controller. Best bet, ditch the stupid heat lamps, use heat pads and/or ceramic heat emitters and use proportional thermostats. You will not replace any heaters again.

    I have a 135 gallon tank I recently bought a under tank heater, mulch, thermostats and hygrometer, water bowl, hiding spots and a jump start thermostat that's on the way. 3/4 of the tank opening is covered with abs plastic and 1/4 with mesh screen for the hot side I was wondering how I would go about setting this up would I put the bowl in the middle with a heat lamp on top and the Uth on one side or would the bowl have to be on the hot side as well? I wanna get everything ready before I purchase the snake. I also live in Texas and it's winter time so it gets around 50 degrees in my room

      @christophergavino2887 Před 7 lety

      Do you have a digital thermometer? If you don't get one, the gauge i had showed 82 and then the digital was wayyy more accurate it was 90 -96 easy. Also make sure you don't leave it too hot they can burn so sometimes in the tank i just toss the bedding that's in the hotspot with the cool side so it'll be normal temperature.

    I know this video is old, but I have a question. I bought a thermostat to use with my heat lamp that has a ceramic heat emitter in it... Only problem is, the lamp I bought has a dimmer switch on it which I did not realize. Is it safe to use the thermostat on it still? Would I just turn the dimmer on the lamp all the way up so the thermostat can control the amount of power/heat going to the CHE? Or do I need to just completely replace the lamp with one that just has an on/off switch? Do you have a recommended lamp to use?

      It’s never a bad idea to have the ability to make more heat than you need. It’s better to be able to regulate the heat to be cooler than to need heat and not be able to make enough.

    • @reddo9653
      @reddo9653 Před 5 lety

      If the thermostat says 80° it’s most likely ok but the bulb being hot you shouldn’t worry because remember all bulbs get hot like when you touch a bulb in your house it’s hot but it doesn’t feel hot when you’re near it so it’s like that but since it’s heated it’s intentionally hotter, hope this helps :)

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 Před 4 lety

      Ceramic heaters heat objects below. It is entirely possible that the snake is seeing temps above 80 on its body, but the air can still be cool. You really need to measure the temp of the snake. The only thing that matters is the internal body temp of the snake, but the temp on its back is close enough. Get a non-contact thermometer. Cheap these days. Not that crap tiny one sold by Zilla or whoever. Get a hand-held, full-sized one on Amazon or somewhere. Totally worth it. Then you can see what the snake is experiencing and adjust.
