- Kaufdorf Autofriedhof - Switzerland's vintage car graveyard.
It was the biggest graveyard of its kind in Europe -- a vast metal jungle of more than 1,000 rusting vintage cars including forgotten British Wolseleys, "sit up and beg" Ford Prefects, rotting Porsches and even the wreck of a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.
The collection of decaying old-timers, which go back to the late-1920s, sits in makeshift corrugated iron garages and among trees on the edge of Kaufdorf some 10 miles south of Switzerland's capital Bern.
After surviving for 75 years, the authorities have declared that the collection is an environmental hazard and decided to clear it by court order. But the plan has provoked uproar among concerned Kaufdorf locals and more than just a few other Swiss residents. A campaign to preserve the site was started when an open day was held. The organisers expected about 50 people to attend, but 10,000 turned up. Franz Messerli, whose father founded the car cemetery, said: "We never expected such interest. Our aim is to preserve it for posterity as a national work of art."
Mr Messerli's father, Walter, opened what was originally intended as a vehicle breaker's yard in 1933. A part-time racing driver and scrap-metal dealer, he was fascinated by cars and even taught himself to be a mechanic. At its peak, his collection numbered about 2,000 vehicles.

Heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. So many memories of oldtimers I hadn't seen since I was a child. And thanks for the haunting and appropriate music. It doesn't invade, it complements the visuals so well...

The Auwauter Carlux VW Tour Bus in this video is almost complete in its restoration in Germany now! A good friend is doing it and he has all three existing examples in his hands!
Thanks for your comment. The Carlux was one of the most rare car on the Kaufdorf site and it is a chance that it got salvaged. I am following the restoration on facebook.
It's amazing to think that all these cars were arriving home one day for the first time, ready for their maiden voyage out for a family drive on their first run - brand new. Fresh out of the factory. Sad.

Old, rusty cars just fascinate me. I think i'm gonna buy me a occasion, park it behind the house and in about 40 years i'm gonna sit in it and fucking enjoy :P
I was a little surprised to see some American cars mixed in - late '40s Dodge, '55 Plymouth, '61 Cadillac, even a Studebaker.
I know a woman from Germany named Isabella. Her father chose the name because of the Borgward Isabella, one of which is shown here.
Switzerland is a latecomer to recycling. My favorite; the Panhard dyna. Thanx.

Sorry all cars shown here are gone. Some were rescued, but at lot of them were destroyed.

I couldn't believe that the tidy Swiss would tolerate such a mess for ever. No surprises then, when I couldn't find it on Google Earth - a 2008 Swiss court ruling ordered the cars removed so they were either auctioned off or sent for scrap.

My thoughts from start to finish of that vid. Will the pain ewer end... I am an emotional person who loves cars, i like working on cars more than driving them. Right now i am thinking about rescuing a old Mercedes Vito 1997 because i find it a pity to scrap it. Thou it is rotten as a gorgonzola cheese i belive it is worth the effort, and because it is what i like to do for my pleasure. To see this film here is almost unbearable. Rest in peace poor Opel VW Morris etc.
I agree. It's hard to swallow. Think of the time, energy, effort and money it took to build those machines. Mercedes-Benz is in the top category when it comes to quality of build and reputation. Many international Heads of States use that particular brand. Really sad. But what about those Rolls Royces, BMWs and Jaguars? I think I saw about seven of those. And being a Ford V8 man, I saw a Mustang at 1.55. The first thing I said..."a Mustang". But, we have to remember...the wrecking yards know what they are doing. What it cost to "bring" it back, relative to its value in the market. You just don't spend $30,000 on a vehicle that's worth $10,000 after restoration. So, it ends up in the yard. Really sad, really is. The only problem with video, is it has an infestation of...Beetles!!!
Interesting to see the effect of a wet climate. Doubt if more the 2 or 3 could be restored but at great cost the rest crusher bait

It's a conversion of sorts called VW Auwärter Carlux, I can't seem to find much English documentation of it, but they had some info on it when it got auctioned. From what I remember the short summary goes as follows: It's extremely rare, it was sold off and is being restored. Here's one in better condition: /watch?v=pBfxLrVmgFE
Can you tell me who wrote/performed this music? It's class. Lots of harmonics over drones. Very cool. the video speaks for itself.

Hope they all went to a good home. Also supprised they were not bought up years ago. I know people that travel to Europe and load up containers and bring them to America.

:( I would have given ANYTHING for some of this cars, the poor 56 Plymouth... I wouldn't mind travelling from Spain up to here and take one of this old beauties home to give it a new decent life... I'm a 19 year old student which had to work VERY hard in order to buy a destroyed 79 Citroen Dyane, and... Seing that somewhere else part of this cars were destroyed... I would have paid for at least one of them all the money i have, which isnt a lot but... That wasn't an end for those cars... At all

You're right,to restore the cars are too far gone.However,on every car shown here are still reusable parts.Door handles,bumpers,axles,windscreens,
emblems and so on.Parts where many car restorers searching for.Therefore,and not only for this reason,it's a shame that these cars were pressed into scrap metal.
