Crawler Canyon Presents: Daphne Redux, aka Painting a Patina

  • Daphne finally got her rebuild following the Jolly Green project, and ended up getting a whole new powertrain, a bunch of fabricated parts, and a new body. As the patina finish seems to be pretty popular, I thought-- the Creep(er) is cheap, I might as well give it a shot.
    Beware: I'm prone to rambling, so this one got feature-length before I even knew what happened. I personally think it's worth it, but you know. Watch and find out. :)
    Full-disclosure, I'm working on editing on a short(er) video just focusing on the painting process, and it will be trimmed down quite a bit. If you want to see any running footage, and a more in-depth look at the paint/patina process, then you're in the right place.

    Wow we got a feature length today! Really impressed and the body looks awesome! I followed the similar 5 foot mantra when I was painting my Class1 Mojave body with the airbrush and doing the vintage looking SR5 stripes. Spent all this time masking perfect lines and what happens? My mask pulls up paint in a couple spots. I reminded myself of its 5 footer status and pushed the paint back down. For good measure, I then painted several more coats of clear. When it comes off next time, at least it will be from rock rash 😂. I think this would be a good candidate for a torch patinaed, wooden flat bed. Hopefully it can be lightweight because it looks like Daphne is pulling some crazy lines on those rocks now. It also looks pretty rad as a cab only

    Doc,that looks fantastic! And Daphne’s chassis is superb. Beefy and well thought. I’m thinking she’s perfect in her current state.

    Being a wood guy what about creating a wood piece to fit between the c channel in the rear to serve as frame support and wood bed…stain / weather as needed to match body.

    The Copperhead out of the Ryft or your old Micro X would give you much smoother starts.

    I love the way you can take a rig you've had for so long, and make it so much better, and get so much more enjoyment out of it. I'm working on the same type of paint job for a VW van body I'm working on, and I think yours turned out great! Maybe a fuel cell, or just a flat bed to finish it out. Also, how's the descents?

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Před 2 lety

      It descends far better than I thought it would, as it has to be +65% front weight. I'm now really leaning toward a flatbed, as it would be a good test piece for what Jolly Green is gonna need.

    looks awesome!!! As for any noise out of the outrunner, I recently put the new holmes hobbies V2 crawlmaster mini esc with his v3 revolver and its silent, only hear the gear box. I do see they're out of stock again tho...but potentially future option.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, that Crawlmaster seems to be perpetually out of stock. I'm inches away from just going with a Mamba Micro-- it won't likely be dead silent, but I think it will be a fair bit smoother than the budget Hobbywing in there now.

    • @Andy_Yates
      @Andy_Yates Před 2 lety

      @@CrawlerCanyon Can confirm the noise you hear in the Slate combo will be similar with the outrunner, but louder. The "Castle whine". Holmes has been restocking the bare board Crawlmasters every couple days and I can share my own experience that their stock notification didn't work immediately for me. It was several hours too late because I'd been refreshing the page for their ESC wiring kit and it showed in stock around lunch time. Then the email didn't hit my inbox until late that evening. My local group has an epic 150 gate trail run this weekend. If this local esc stands up to that abuse, I'll give you their name. Price for theirs wired was 115 and mine came with a heat sink + xt60 and JST connector installed. It handles 3s and 4s too

    I'd bolt a scale looking fuel cell in the back instead of cutting it off

    camera picks up the high pitch wine just fine as it is annoying me.
    the rear stick out is very long but also kept it from rolling backwards, so maybe a little wood deck between the towers to look better.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Před 2 lety

      I've had my eye on a Mamba Micro X (as the Holmes Crawlmaster Mini seems to be perpetually out of stock) but as I have no idea if that will actually quiet it down... I just deal with the whine until something better comes along.

      @@CrawlerCanyon Furitek is developing on an outrunner motor & quiet/FOC ESC for 1/10 crawlers. I have their ESCs in all three of my 24s and they're great! Hopefully their 1/10 stuff will be just as good.
