Hi Nigel just wanted to give you a shout out over the HP Victor engine intake mod kit that you reccomend, I have ordered one, and it is on way its way, so thank you again, currently watching your Revell Lancaster build for when I get my Airfix kit to complete.. Still loving your content and I hope your dog is doing OK, as I understand she has been poorly. I run a Dog home boarding business so they are very close to my heart. Tx Mark

Very interesting and a great model of an iconic "Buck Roger's/ Flash Gordon" style aircraft. I have the matchbox one. Box, instructions and decals but the parts are in my attic kit bash box, with a half-melted tail unit! Incidentally my two huge airfix Harriers (1/24?) have that grey chewy plastic feel to them.weirdly soft and textured!

  • @PiperStart
    @PiperStart Před 3 lety +1

The best of British. I made a 1/400 HMS Montgomery by Airfix in that dark grey plastic. A thoroughly pleasant exercise.

I built this kit - I'm probably echoing the thoughts of others, but here are few of my "notes" and "if I were doing it again" observations for anyone interested...
Most of the fit was good, but the fit of the "saddle" wing panel over the fuselage needed some fettling to get a step out.
Jet pipes are almost invisible, I wouldn't spend much effort making them seamless.
Ahead of painting, I should have paid attention to getting the cockpit glazing aligned - either pack it or blend down the fuselage to get it aligned. Mine has some little steps. Test fit, test fit, test fit.
The missile fairing in the bomb bay needed some shims to get it nicely aligned.
Front fuselage needed to be "stretched" a bit to fit round the cockpit. I preferred to sand the cockpit walls and floor to get a good fit rather than clamp and glue to avoid creating a stressed joint.
I would look to find a way to fit nose gear and airbrake after painting to avoid knocking them off.
The fuselage joint rear of the bomb bay underside has "popped" several times on mine and isn't regluing. Wish I'd added some extra tabs to make the glue area of that joint bigger and stronger.
Fairing around the engine nozzles needs a bit of fettling to slip over the nozzles (and had pretty big sinks.)
I bought the Eduard "Big Ed" set for it. It's nice, but you can see almost none of the cockpit once it's closed up. Gear bay PE may be worthwhile for anyone that picks up their models (not that the kit version is bad.) But I wouldn't bother with the cockpit PE unless you want to practise PE.
I bought the Master Models fuel probe and pitot tube set - they're nice and only a few GBP.
Despite the size of the kit, three years since I finished it, there's no sign of any sag in wings. The internal box structure must be doing it's job.
Don't be put off though dear reader, with a bit of effort the results are very nice, but (at least on my print) this wasn't a case of "chuck the glue in the box, shake it up and a model falls out." Also, it's quite big!

You can fit the front wheel before painting. Don't glue the strut until afterwards.

Yes do the intakes off the model, I would have if I did it again. Most other aspects you can follow the directions without any issues. The clear wing tips are a bit of an issue and the wing end pitot tubes.

You can get around the top wing fit - needs some careful sanding and checking of the underside of top wing section prior to fitting, dry fit it and have a good look at pinch points and sand down, you’ll find it fits far far better if you do this.

Such a shame, (now that Airfix are putting so much more into their ‘designed by modellers, for modellers designs’ ) that they are cutting corners on the styrene type and production methods. ‘Spoiling the ship for a ha’penneth of tar’ springs to mind🙄🙄

Hi Nigel great video, although I have had to buy the Revell kit so I can do the tanker version as I cannot find the Airfix K.2 kit anywhere to buy, If you hear of any coming up for sale please holler..Also have managed to buy a copy of the V Bomber ref book you reccomend (on Amazon for £ 140 quid currently) so I found in a second hand online book shop and got it for £ 40 and have bought, I am looking forward to reading especially about XH-558. Also have you done a video re overcoming the surface issues and scribing, as you mention the Rervell klit will need some work, so could do with learning how to do it ! Between Jen and yourself you are now my go to "how to" video providers.
Finally on your favourite subject: Lancasters.. which kit (1/72 initially) would you reccomend that I buy to build for my WW2 bomber airfield diorama that I want to create ? I have sourced the vehicles, people and a Pathfinder Mosquito kit so far, and seem to remember you could get building kits from Airfix, but this was the 60's/70's so no idea how I would track them down now. Tx again for wonderful content and stay safe. Mark.

As I near the completion of my Vulcan B.2, i can't help but reflect on the fact that the fitting issues were so bad (port wing in particular), that it sucked all the joy of the build out of me and that I don't want to build an Airfix kit again anytime soon.
On one of your other videos, a poster argued that we should keep throwing money at Airfix because we should be glad they're still afloat, and that it was not fair to compare them with other brands. The bottom line is that for the £70 I paid Airfix for the brand new Vulcan kit, I could have had an F-4 from ZM or a huge Su-27 from GWH - and in both cases, the build experience would have been filled with substantially more enjoyment.
Anyway, I'll watch you build this with interest... but I won't be buying one!

Unfortunately, books that are unlikely to sell in volume attract a high unit cost. Particularly if they have a lot of glossy full colour images in them. It's simply down to the economics: If a publisher is producing "Buttons Through The Ages" it's not likely to sell many copies, whereas the latest JK Rowling paperback is going to sell millions. Specialist titles with low distribution always cost more (I still shudder to think of the cost of the text books I had to buy for college, even decades later.)

@@davecardboard9567 There's an oddly named place in Georgia (US) called "The Rock". Enormous printers there, had a few pick-up there back when I was an OTR driver. Coupon and ads for newspapers, magazines, books over on its slow side, and text books next to that. Had their own railyard and 3 zip codes. Odd things you learn from trucking. Backed up to the door and was asked to turn on the refrigerator (reefer as we called the type trailer) normally this makes the metal floor too slick for forklifts. Unusually told to stand by door inside and had nice conversation with supervisor there. Once he was satisfied with it's ability to chill, he explained the product was getting was airline magazines fresh off the print machine (at least 8 times bigger than my 82ft long road truck). I was getting 12 pallets for full 35k pound load, how did I want them placed and please go turn off the reefer. 10 minutes it took to get back to door, building sucked up all the moisture from the trailer, I was very surprised. Supervisor explained that the magazines may have a slight need to dry out during first 8 hours after I'm loaded and to please turn it off then. Will do, but why? Turned out I was delivering direct to tarmacs and my freight was going either straight on planes, half of each stop did, by hand no forklifts allowed, rest into the office between the planes. Supervisor explained that was singularly most profitable thing that they made. Huh? How? They get between 1 and 5% of commission from bored people buying stuff from those magazines, LoL. It took ten years of text book and hardcover sales to match 1 weeks worth of these, or a months worth of coupons and sales ads.
They never are in a hurry for any books printing, except the one batch of Harry Potter release day to Amazon I took from there. LoL. Printers are a crazy business for sure. Have a spiffy day gang.
