I have just come out of hospital after having an enlarged spleen, low hemoglobin levels, and low oxygen levels. I was in my bed with nothing on but a gown and I didn't have any problem with it. As a nurse, to say "man area" instead of penis was a little immature. Especially for a nurse. There is nothing wrong with the WHOLE of the human body. Imagine if they said your "lady area" instead of your vagina. Wouldn't that be weird? Heck, loads of doctors, nurses, patients, even the staff that brought round the coffees and teas saw my penis often in hospital after I kind of forgot I was wearing a gown and just sat there in a chair with my legs open, or on the bed with my legs open. No one was embarrassed, no one was shocked, it's just a human body. I was amazed actually how many nurses looked multiple times and seemed to enjoy looking. It was also very prevalent they liked it when I was behind the curtain with a nurse or nurses when they dressed my leg ulcers. Sometimes, my gown rose above my waist, but the nurses didn't care. One nurse actually insisted to be there on her own and didn't want help from her mentor. They have probably seen hundreds of penises in their profession, so one more is nothing to them. The only problem I had with it was when I had to have a catheter put in and trying to put a catheter in a 1/3 of an inch penis was very difficult for the poor nurse. She had to get a male doctor in in the end to squash down on my stomach try and make it longer. We all laughed. She managed it in the end, though. To me, privacy in hospitals is non existent and that's how it should be. I DO agree with single sex wards, but everything else is irrelevant. Especially underwear under a gown. As I said, all the nurses definitely liked looking, both older and younger. Vietnam have definitely got it right!
