Todays video covers the final paint and completion of the first of 2 Honda VFR800fi. This is the 2001 model. The 2nd one is a manual choke 2000 model.
Every week a new video will be uploaded covering a specific topic of restoring a motorbike of some interest.
I intention is to share how to restore an object. Anything that I grow passionate about. It’s that simple. I have a day job in a company which restores for a living. Please check out our other channel CarbonBikeRepair (a blue shield logo) for some amazing carbon fibre and paint skills.
I’m not a professional CZcamsr but maybe one day if this amazing response for you all continues!

Some history of this Honda VFR800FI 2001 model:
Discovered on Facebook right in the middle of restoring of a very rare Norton Commando, I decided to impulse buy! It was later that I discovered the Gen5 version was a limited production run before the VTEC model emerged in 2002 and quite sought after. Lucky me and lucky bike!
It is in a shocking state but I’ll turn it around if you watch this challenging restoration! Old tech is fickle…
I don’t imagine there will be more than 2 parts to this as I’m just as excited to deliver the iconic Commando back to the road or a museum!
For now my intention is to restore this VFR on the tightest of budgets (which is fun for me to ride) but also to deliver to my viewers a great example of a Honda VFR800FI.
Thanks again for watching my work. You are all contributing in some way to the growth and maturation of the content.
See you on your screen!

As a fellow vfr owner so pleased to see a pair saved, I see so many parted out and run down at the moment.. they are a fantastic machine and much better made than many modern bikes today, love your work!
What beautiful engineering these V4's are. Something so special about them
Totally agree. One day these bikes are going to be special to own.
I always get a major attack of nostalgia when I see a VFR - and two being restored is a major jolt to the senses. I owned a 1998 model from 2002 through to a couple of years ago. Admittedly, it was parked up for a few of those years while I used other bikes.
My bike was used for touring Europe, commuting, track days and various other bike related events. Not sure the joints would cope with the riding position any more but I’d still buy one, funds permitting.
I have a 2000 FiY in the USA. I agree...I haven't been able to ride it much as I have a dodgy left hip from a crash 33 years ago. It's still a great bike, but as its potential rider I'm just not up to scratch. Time for a Harley with running boards and a more relaxed riding position.
Beautiful motorcycles. Great determination to deal with so many challenges. Congratulations on a superb restoration. 👍🇮🇪
Honda VFR800, what a fantastic and quality machine Honda made. You did a great job, Soichiro would be proud!
What a master class in renovation. Absolutely fantastic bikes to look at. Big applause to you for all the hard craft you’ve put in.
The bike I always wanted but never had, there is something very satisfying about watching the care and time spent restoring classics like these, great job sir.
It will be a great buy for anyone interested in these legends. 👍
2 key mods for this generation of VFR...a high mount exhaust (shows off that single sided swingarm and uncorks that glorious exhaust note), and an aftermarket seat. Don't bother recovering the original, the ergos are terrible. In my humble opinion, the Corbin offers the best compromise between ergos and too much foam (Sargent). The Corbin Smuggler is a nice item, sometimes available with a seat heater. Very worthwhile extras are a high quality rear shock, properly set up for the rider, and bar risers. Advanced/hard to find mods include an RC51 front end (triple adjustable and the the wheel matches the stock VFR rear), Corbin Beetlebags, and the tinted windscreen. Supposedly the tinted windscreen was not a USA item and is very rare stateside. Don't be tempted by bigger cams, big bore kits, or Power Commanders...wasted time and money. It's difficult to improve on Honda's basic engineering with the engine.
Awesome info! Do you know any vendor or supplier still selling the under seat exhaust for gen 5s?
I am currently restoring a 2004 z750 which was a true wreck shes moving along nicely i hope to have her ready for next season
That restoration was excellent. Seeing them as a pair was awesome.
Your attention to detail is a testament to your craftsmanship. These turned out beautiful. Thank you for sharing that with us.
Two fabulous looking 5th gen VFRs. Very well done. Twins, His and Hers.
Wonderful job! Thanks for breathing new life in to these super machines. I wanna go buy a VFR again!
Outstanding work and beautiful bikes. VFRs are such awesome bikes and you brought two back to life.
Bikes that led me to your channel, Guzzi was icing on the cake that made me subscribe.
The work that you and your guys do is just plain awesome.
Thank you, can't wait for whatever comes next 😊
Thank you so much for posting the videos. The last one was absolutely incredible. I love what you’ve done and what you do bringing these two bikes back to life absolutely incredible. I am a huge Honda fan I have a CBR 1000 and I’m so happy that you restored those two bikes good job brother.
This has been a fantastic series, many thanks for filming it. I have a 1999 fix and I think it’s probably pound for pound one of the best bikes ever built. 😉
Beautiful Rides!! Excellent Journey!
They really are an under-rated machine ! I had the use of my brother's '99 fuel injected model for a couple of years up til quite recently . It ran like new , and I loved the whine from the cam gears .
I had a 1999 from new, owned it for 10 years. The second best bike I ever owned. Other than slight surging on/off the throttle it was a dream. My only regret was selling it. As always your attention to detail, craftsmanship and editing make your channel a pleasure to watch. Well done and please keep em coming. Stephen from Calabasas, CA, USA
And your best bike ?
I have the 99 anniversary one, I wish I had never bought it.
It looks perfect and runs as it should
I just don't like it.
I like my o'd 89 CBR100F much better.
I enjoy watching this because I know how hard it is to do. Thank you!
What a worthy machine to invest time and money into. Pound for pound, one of the best bikes ever built IMHO. Excellent video!
I had one of those and I loved it and before that I had the VFR 750. Both amazing bikes and very practical.
Great job, great memories of the three VFR’s I bought new back in the day, wish I still had them! 👍👏😀
The best of the best. The gen 5 VFR’s are awesome. I’d love to get another one.
nice. and two seconds of miles davis was a bonus.
Stumbled upon this channel a day or two ago. Lovely bikes! I must say when you did the paint prep I saw the white and had to Google what the bike would look like with white paint. I love the traditional red but the white also looks great on it.
Out of 104 subscribed channels this one is by far the one i always look forward to and enjoy the most! I have a Norton commando (why i found this channel) but the techniques and care of the restoration work is phenomenal! Im learning so much more than just stuff for my norton. Thank you and Keep em coming!!!
Thank you 🙏
That was a truly laid-back and enjoyable restoration. Great video! Thanks!
Great Job! Talk about patience & dedication to figure it out. Hats off to you sir. I had a 2003 for several yrs, but I think the 1998-2001 VFR was the best yrs. Gear drivin cams and no V-Tech.
Love these bikes. I bought a pristine one with custom made stainless steel exhausts and upgraded suspension front and rear, for 1800 euros. Sadly it got totalled and I couldn't keep the parts due to problems during the legal battle with the other party's insurance. Good music in the workshop too, Miles, Herbie Hancock, some latin music, classical. Great job on keeping these VFR's alive.
Excellent job. Had you not done them, parts bikes. Great save, stunning results.
I had an 'R' reg VFR 800FiW back in the early 2000's, what a machine! The induction howl from under the tank on full acceleration was like a Nascar, what a great bike, you have to love Honda, they really are the masters.
Nice job! I'm so glad you resurrected them both!
Congrats. Two beautiful bike saved from the graveyard! Well done!!
You have a great painter. I’ve never seen work like that. They are both like new bikes.
Wow. What a process over a year. Well done. I have a gen 5 vfr and I definitely don't have the knowledge or equipment to perform a rebuild like that. Incredible job.
Really loved this serie. There are guys on VFR Discussion forum who gets 120 rwhp on these bikes and 140 with an over bore for cbr 929 pistons.
VFR800, fun to drive. When the V-Tec kicks in....😊😁😇 Even at 6'3", shoesize 15, comfortable to ride. Fast, nimble, perfect......
Amazing work, great bikes saved, splendid effort.
Brilliant! I owned a VRF just like those and loved it, one of the bikes I should have kept.......
Seeing how complicated these modern bikes are I’m really pleased I ride a bomb proof 1978 Kawasaki Z650 B2. It just runs perfectly 24/7.
Touch wood Colin! 👍
A joy to watch!
Restoration work aside (which is amazing), what stands out on your videos is the high quality of the music that´s always playing. Cheers from Brazil.
What a great comment. Yes I’m a bit of a snob! 🙏
What a transformation!
These bikes went from dull to completely stunning in 15 minutes!
They are beautiful!
Many thanks and good luck with your channel
I think your experience goes even further as not many of us were trained up by Russians namely 'Ighor' 👍🤣
Very nice job, congratulations !
The vfr800fi is definitely one of my best bike ever !
I just adopted one, what a great bike. I detail paint, put some fk1000p wax on the painted surface especially the rims. It is a wax seal..may last 6 months good for winter roads. Mine is yellow just going to see if I can match the paint. Thanks for all your help loved the journey.
We use PlastX on all plexiglass, Menzerna 3800 by hand on paint just go slow.
We shine a big light to see scratches, then remove them with a 2 stage machine polisher in my icon., an 1" microfiber pad.
I had a '92 (last of the gear driven cams) 750 and now own a gen-1 crossrunner, this is incredible work to witness what superb attention to detail and beautiful results. Subbed.
They have come out lovely 👍👏
Awesome work and great results.
A real pair of stunners what wonderful work👍
Fantastic work! They look and sound superb. Well done.
Great video and great work!!!! Have enjoyed your series for each bike! Keep it up :)
What a great paintjob....nice result.
Saw and appreciate the entire series. Subscribed!
Brilliantly done! I would not hesitate to buy one these wonderfull bikes!
Nicely done.
Wow well done indeed fantastic work! Stunning bikes.
Big pat on the back, great work on one of hondas best ever bikes they produced
I know exactly what you were doing, I guess I am same as you in this matter. As we say in Germany you get from the "hundreds into the thousands". These projects take patience and time, knowlege, tools and a lot of money too. You are a true gearhead : )
Brilliant job mate!
I had a 2001 one in red also and it was an amazing bike.
Exquisite .. 2nd best version of the best bike ever made ..
You have done an awesome job with those VFR!👍
i had 3 vfr`s,the 1990 the 95 and the hailwood anniversery bike 98
lovely bikes,all bought new
since 2004 own the fireblade sc57 from new, still have it whith 15 000 miles on it
Fantastic job - well done.
Top job and such a underrated bike. I think they still look awesome
dude those vfr 800s are absolutely brilliant
Thanks for sharing 👍
Wish I had 10% of your knowledge and expertise
Great bike the VFR. I had an 800Fi. Such a glorious sound, instantly recognisable. Regret selling it but my old back and wrists complained to much.
Well worth the time and effort turned out really nice job ,keep it up guys
Congrats, great job you did there!
Great work 👍🏻
good job..love it..
One of coolest vids on u tube by masterclass boys envious of your skills.
Very nice! I owned an '04 VFR, same red color, purchased new. Hated to but sold it with 60k+ miles. Best bike I ever owned.
A 2004 VFR is a 6th gen V-Tec bike and totally different bike to these 5th gen gear driven cam ones. Night and day different.
Turn amazing!! Had a 2000 green. Still love those things. Love the white and black. The mirrors of the 2000 is diferent and lost oportunity to put a rc30 91/93 rear wheel . Excelent work!
I had one of these a truly brilliant bike, racked up many miles on it 😎👍
You did a fantastic job restoring these two bikes. On the electrical side I use a power probe 3 and it tells you right away if you have voltage (how much) and ground and if you have a good one. Not always really so easy to tell. There is a cheap book by if I remember correctly Tracy? Martin How to diagnose and repair automobile electrical systems. Worth it's weight in gold. Keep doing what you are doing!
Thanks Fred 👍
I enjoyed watching. I bought a low mileage 98 a few years back. She still runs like a dream. Replaced the charging system updated to a mosfit rectifier, bypassed the harness. Some of these bikes had some pretty bad charging systems. Things tended to melt. I always get asked questions about it when I take it out.
Yes I notice that rectifier get hot…too hot for my liking. Can’t stand around an idle too long. Needs airflow after 3 minutes in my opinion
@MyRestoration1 replaced mine with a Yamaha mosfit, and wired directly to the battery. I can give you some links if needed but I'm assuming I am across the pond.
My restoration, These pair of Interceptor's turned out magnificent! Very good work. I have a '98 VFR...781....and I love it. The only reason I would consider selling the VFR is my age and back. I also love my '07 ST 1300 (non-ABS), what you Brits call a Pan European. if my ST could sound like my VFR, that would be sweet. I am going to change out my LED Headlight bulbs back to halogen on my VFR. The LED's are not working as well as I was expecting. I added a Givi rack for the E-21 panniers and a Givi D200S Touring screen.
So good to watch. If only I had half your skill and patience.
WOW! First time coming across your channel and I was blown away! Absolutely stunning results. I recently purchased a 2010 VFR 1200F DCT and absolutely love it! Wish you guys were in the colonies and would love for y’all to give mine a once over! Ride safe…Subscribed!
Fantastic!!! work my friend. I immediately liked and subscribed. Want to have more of your craftsmanship. Cheers from Germany 👍🇩🇪😎
Great video of your restorations, I wish I had your skillset and your problem solving ability.
Fantastic
Regards
Dave from Scotland
Wow, I have a 2001 VFR only 15,000 on it when I bought it 5 years ago. Needed nothing but maintenance . I put ABM bars on and givi windscreen . Yoshimura exhaust . 520 conversion chain 2 up rear sprocket really woke her up. This bike grows on you. now have 55,000. oh ya mines red also.
Just beautiful
🏴 love from Scotland 🏴
I got one 98 in exchange for a Vstrom with the intention of selling it fast. Was so happy with it that I kept it one year. But I'm more into dual purpose bikes. Amazing machine. The first day I drove it under a heavy storm on the highway way faster than I should, I didn't get a drop of rain on me, except the top of the helmet. The way you could control the slides on the curves with this engine were out of this world. The only problem with this bike was you usually were going a lot faster than you thought, it was so easy and comfortable.
Thanks Coast rider. Good luck with your channel 👍
@@MyRestoration1 Thanks! I like your channel too. These brilliant bikes desserve to be saved!
Nice job...👍
Amazing work! have a 2000 VFR Fi what a bike hope you enjoy riding them
fantastic Job mate!
I've had two of these, one for the track, one for the road. I sold both of them due to the ever returning electrical issues. The track bike nearly burnt down at the end of a session, the road one left me on the highway stranded, with the rectifier. Granted they both had over 130K kms on the clocks..
Iconic engines but for me I rather sit on my newer bikes.
All bikes of that era had crap regulator/rectifiers. Just upgrade it to a Shindenegen FH020AA or FH027. Hard wire it in getting rid of the awful connector blocks that melt and can catch fire.
Nice job 👍
Super Arbeit 👍👍👍👍👍
Wow. You’ve got skills.
Amazing results! Well done
Hey Mr C. We miss you at the Prince of Wales! I don’t go anymore. You spoilt us
@@MyRestoration1 hope you and the family are all well and enjoying life
Félicitations pour ces restaurations de très hautes qualités.
Ces VFR le valaient bien.
Nice to look at😊
Great job done Bro. 😊👍
