I had so much volunteer basil last year that I didn’t plant any this spring, thinking I’d have a ton more volunteers, but I got 3 lemon and a couple regular plants.
My flowers from all the herbs and mix them in my herbs its incredible. Pollen flower dill thyme basil is very different
Nice. The flower seeded for you. It's good to let areas flower come fall for that reason.

Hi ,Gary
I started alot of basil this January & maragolds for our garden ,to have around all the Tomatoes & peppers ,starting alot
Actually helped this year , we had a lot fewer hornworms ,etc...
But oh my ,Some are so huge, as I took off the flowers & they got so bushy , so I took out 1 big basil plant split into 3 more plants for other areas .
Ive already made Basil & olive oil in icecube trays, then put in gallon freezer bags, also made some homemade pesto for us & my 2 sons families , plus have 4 bunches tied up with twine upside down drying in our sunroom hanging upside down , then will put in containers once dried .
I absolutely love basil & dill .Im gonna bring part of 1 into my kitchen to have ,plus cutting some & putting In water helps it last over a week .
Its almost time to put our shade clothe up probably this weekend, as today we started with heat index warning of 110 .in rural Texas in Montgomery County.
We really planted alot this year , even watermelons 🍉 which I havent planted in oh my 10 years ,
Well we already have 6 watermelons and babies ,
I started them in 5 gallon food grade buckets , my husband drilled holes in bottom and 2 inch from bottom 3 vines per bucket , on my deck ( easier for me to manage ) but now put another V cucumber trellis up against deck as the vines were growing down , the ones on the deck ,I put straw/hay for them to lay & grow on and put chicken wire around them & a piece over the top ,so squirrels or etc....dont get to them.
God bless you for all your great content , Ive really appreciate still learning new tricks at 58 yrs old .
Have a beautiful weekend.

Some great tips there Gary! I bought a small basil plant on discount from a UK supermarket about 6 years ago i think. I have been propagating them since then.
I put them in water for 2 weeks and then put them in 2 pint plastic milk bottles to establish and then transfer to our 25cm pot indoors. I have several in one pot and give away a lot. The leaves i remove when propagating, i dry off and take fresh from the big pot.
I am just removing the garlic that we just inter planted with the tomatoes.
I did save some spares for someone but as it has been some weeks now, i might plant them in the place of garlic so i can re start the process of propagating.
I also tend to slow down propagating during winter months as they grow more slowly. If leave it too long the stems will get too big and harden off brown, so i try to keep on top of removing any leggy green stems.
Anyway, Take care!
Nice on the propagation.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN
I will take a few medium sized cuttings from pruning strip the bottom leaves and pinch the very tip off and root them in a jar of water with a little rooting hormone for more plants. Not every transplant survives after planting but most do if I keep them well watered for a week.
Great tip.

My lemon basil makes such a good tea with my lemon thyme. It definitely doesn’t produce as many leaves and wants to flower but it’s worth it.

I was just saying I keep topping the flowers and every week they are back. Now I know why lol
It really helps to top them early on.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just topped and chopped them this morning lol. Have a nice bag of fresh basil too. I'm a fast learner 😂
Thank you Gary for a very informative video!!!
Good luck growing

Great video! I have not used basil cuttings to make basil vinegar but have steeped basil in olive oil to make basil olive oil. I also make pesto out of the excess basil cuttings and freeze in small canning jars. I add a little olive oil on top of the pesto to preserve color. It keeps in the freezer for at least 6 months.
Basil oil is a good one.

I always wait too long to plant my basil and slack on succession sowing and here I am getting schooled again I thought when the flower was at the stage it changed the whole flavor of the plant🙌🏻😂😂 maybe it’s ok at the budding stage?
Flavor does change. I should have pruned earlier on some.

Thanks for the video- I’ll make sure to shade my basil as appropriate. Question: Do you have experience growing Everleaf type basil? It says it holds off flower production 12 weeks longer than other types. Would it still be helpful to prune to increase branching, so to speak? Also, does basil propagate from cuttings easily? How does it compare to starting from seed in terms of length of time until harvest?
I haven tried that one. Pruning sends out more leaves but depends on how that one grows.

Changes the flavor?? Can you expand on that? If it starts going to flower , does that mean existing leaves flavor has already changed? If you trim after starting to flower, will existing leaves taste off? Vs. keeping it trimmed before it starts to flower?
Yeah plants are always moving nutrients and stuff around. So the flavor is not terrible but it changes as the flowers grow. They are usually much stronger tasting. Heat and watering also come into play. Taste them. You will notice a difference.

Can you address watering basil (once established) please? I struggle with that 🤷🏻♀️
Well it varies based on plant size and temp. So it is hard to tell someone how often.

My basil gets Downy Mildew by the mid to late summer, every year. I’ve even planted the Eleanora basil which is supposed to be resistant to it, and it still got it. Do you have any recommendations with how to stop basil from becoming afflicted?
So that is a tough one. I dont like to spray it with anything as I eat the leaves and the leaves are pretty fragile to wash and on taking on sprays. I would experiment with hydrogen peroxide spray. I have tomato and hydrogen peroxide videos. Test spray the ratio on there and see if it damages basil. If so decrease the amount of h202.

It’s June 26 here in southern Colorado, Zone 5A-6B…. The temperatures here have been abnormally high for this time of year. We are in the high 90s and with this extremely arid climate my basil is struggling. I found if I shade them 80% of the day and water them moderately 3 times a day and fertilize once every two weeks, they are thriving… My Basil tries to flower even though the plants are not producing lots of leaves. Should I leave the flowers on?
Thank you for your video Gary.
Love from Colorado..🐝🏔️ 🪴
I would remove the leaves and plant a second round but you have a good system working.
