  • An easy and efficient way to mask an area of your lino (or wood) block to change your design without cutting away any detail. I am using Mylar plastic here, but any plastic film will work. I mention David Bull who has a fantastic channel about Japanese woodblock printmaking. My Valentine's Day print is sold out, but both the other prints from this series are now available in my website shop - these signed originals cost £35 each and we ship worldwide www.lauraboswell.co.uk If you are enjoying & learning from my films and would like to help us keep these videos free at source, please chip in with a small donation. We have a fundraising page at GoFundMe gf.me/u/zd8bcq

Thank you for the excellent tutorial series. The filming and pacing were superb. I thought it a wonderful idea to make an edition for Valentine's Day and, in the process, use it to teach a technique. I like that you mention an additive approach to inking; going from lighter to darker, if necessary. At the 12:30 mark we see a comparison of the two prints; one with birds and one with hearts. I enjoyed the one with the lighter background and greater contrasts between the elements of the composition. The one with hearts had a deeply overcast, drab sky that removed much of the contrast between elements. It did not seem to elicit a particularly romantic image. The use of the wooden board and how it was incorporated into the design created a wonderful synergy between a found object and your talents! Thank you, again, for taking the time and making the effort to share your talents and passion. Patrick

Thanks Laura, good to see the sooooo simple mask. As you say, looks simple but coming up with the inital idea is the tricky bit. Looking forward to seeing more woodblock with lino. A question please, not related to this video. When you place your damp woodblock prints between your pieces of ply to allow them to dry flat, do you put one print in each layer between the ply or multiple prints? As usual thanks Mr b

What a beautifully simple idea! Is there a reason for masking the block after inking rather than masking before inking and removing the mask to print?

Do it this way and you flip the mask back and forth and the top stays clean , do it the other way and you have an inky mask to remove and replace each time 🙂
